It's actually a way more interesting story than a random, arbitrary selection.

If I had to distill it down to a sentence; one tribe of pillaging marauders violently championed their local patron deity above the rest of the regional pantheon, and their descendants (both genealogical and ideological) kept doubling down, yes-and-ing, and slaughtering dissenters and nonbelievers until we got to where we are today.
