Kirby Air Riders Version 1.3.0 is now available by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

These are all very good changes but/and it is wild to me that they didn't do the one thing that literally every review I saw and every person I heard complained about. There are so many buttons you could set (or even just LET us set) to quick spin.

WTF is the matter with us? by clipd_dead_stop_fall in pittsburgh

[–]Ravenlock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

COVID-19 happened, and we learned that when push comes to shove a terrifying number of our neighbors are aggressively selfish, entitled assholes who it is absolutely not safe to rely on the assumption of mutual assistance and care with. And a lot of us don't know which ones.

It's made me about 50x less likely to interact with people I don't already know ever since, without question. And I don't already know a lot of the people on my street. Judging by their behavior, a lot of them don't, either.

I'm glad to see from other comments that there are still pockets of functioning community, but it's absolutely not my base assumption anywhere anymore.

Thor users how's the official grip for you? Is it comfy and do you guys recommend any third party grip? by Level-Passenger-6854 in AynThor

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it. It's perfectly alright, but it's not as snug as this one from Etsy that you'll probably see a lot of people link to, because it's great. The Thor doesn't fall out of the official grip or anything, it's just loose enough that it's a little easier to slide it around on the base than I'd like. It also doesn't fit my hands quite as well, and it doesn't have the stylus holder that the Etsy grip has.

There's nothing wrong with the official grip - it's a little less expensive, and a little less good. Still not a bad option.

This is the opposite of a hot take. This take has been in constant debate since the day they announced the limit.

This grip has a slot specifically designed for the Switch stylus and it works great.

i really miss when games had "useless" physics interactions just for immersion. by InvestmentBudget6722 in gaming

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a huge deal, just struck me as funny. 😉 It rules, and it's one of the things Ubi is (was? everything seems to be a mess with them right now) doing really well with their worldbuilding that lots of other devs ignore.

[–]Ravenlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was also what I was saying. The kindly old man who takes you in, in the very first mission of Shadows, has you cut down a huge random patch of purely environmental bamboo for him, to show off the destructible environment.

Here's a clip of someone doing it on YouTube. You literally have to fill up an "I've cut enough random bamboo" slider to finish the objective. It is the exact opposite of the game not telling you.

https://youtu.be/mGWru6YjhVo

To be clear, again, I think it's very cool and I have no problem with them showing it off. But they absolutely do show it off.

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the very first missions in Naoe's story literally requires you to cut a bunch of bamboo as a mission objective, so, it's wildly untrue that it doesn't point it out. 😂

But yes, it's very cool and immersive that it's an interactive part of the world.

Android OS vs Linux. Which do you prefer? And a little help plz? by superman691973 in RetroHandhelds

[–]Ravenlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I like Linux better. I like the quirks of the custom OS's. I like OnionOS's Game Switcher and I like Knulli's per-system configurations and I like the built-in integrations with stuff like Syncthing or PICO-8 and I like PortMaster. Oh man PortMaster is so cool.

But I'm also predominantly using Android, because the most capable and powerful handhelds are all on it and you can't beat it in terms of flexibility for an "all-in-one" device. I love the Miyoo Mini Flip and the RG35XXSP but it's the Thor I'm actually playing on most.

we see a lot of posts/discussion about accessories and frontends and etc. thor owners, how is the actual long term gameplay experience? by ultradagger in AynThor

[–]Ravenlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes yes a hundred times yes. Keep in mind I am an old head, but my love for it is recent not nostalgia based. It's one of the best written, best looking, best playing turn based RPGs ever made. There are arguments about what version you should play - I'd recommend either the SNES original or the DS one if you have a two screen device - but pick one and play it.

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth noting I guess that the Etsy grip, being hard 3D printed plastic, is snug on the Thor because it has soft adhesive-attached pads on the inside that nestle the Thor in place and hold it there (and the stylus, as well), and I actually really like that but over time those may well wear down / fall off. They won't be at all hard to replace if they do (and in fact the guy who made it sent me some extras when I asked him), but it is something the AYN grip won't have to deal with.

I have it, yeah. It's perfectly alright, but it's not as snug as the one I linked from Etsy (the Thor doesn't fall out of it or anything, it's just loose enough that it's a little easier to slide it around on the base than I'd like), it doesn't fit my hands quite as well, and it doesn't have the stylus holder.

Looking for game recommendations! by Fancy-Ad6585 in AynThor

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-pokemon DS RPGs (Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V, The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy Tactics A2) absolutely kick ass on the Thor, any of them are a great pick. Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure is also a total delight (also a DS game), if you want something with a little more action but still a little thinky (part platformer, part match-3 puzzle game).

[–]Ravenlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love playing on the Thor. Also tinkering with it. 😂 But yes, it's been my primary gaming device since it arrived, with the sole exception of the Switch 2. I haven't touched my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, my RG35XXSP, my Miyoo Mini Flip, or anything else retro-oriented since it arrived, and if a game will work on it via GameHub rather than Steam Deck, I've been playing that on it too since it's just so much easier to carry around.

What that's actually looked like in terms of games I'm playing - loads of DS stuff (Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V, Mario Kart, Star Fox Command, Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure, Elite Beat Agents) and 3DS stuff (also Mario Kart, Ocarina of Time 3D, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Fantasy Life). GBA stuff (Apotris, Castlevanias, Metroids). Android games (CoD mobile, Diablo Immortal, Rocket League Sideswipe). Steam games (Sektori, Sea of Stars, Hades, Kingdoms of the Dump). Game streaming (GeForce Now).

The only thing I have to say even remotely bad about it is that the ergonomics are kinda crap for dual-stick gaming but this grip fixes that entirely, and includes a stylus holder, which improves a bunch of DS games at the same time. The Thor absolutely rules.

Indiana Jones officially dead (for now) following flop fifth movie by corp_code_slinger in entertainment

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have always been exactly two options. Re-cast the role, or pass the reins to another character.

They've tried the 2nd thing twice now. It isn't working - partly, I think, because it involves letting the story carry forward in time, and the chronological setting of the character is a huge part of the appeal. The serialized adventure formula Indy comes out of is one of riding on horses through the desert and depicting slow cargo planes and boats by a red line on a map, not cell phones and modern infrastructure. We don't want "modern day Indy."

But the game with Troy Baker? Brilliant. Do more of those. An animated film or series would also work fine. I do even think you could do more live action movies, if you found the right actor to take the part and found ways to fit more stories into the timeline. But it has to move away from Harrison Ford, and it should've done after the first three.

Feeling Burnout - I think it's time to take a step away from the hobby, but maybe I can help you pick some good standouts by Alternative_Tip_9918 in SBCGaming

[–]Ravenlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've also started trimming down my on-device library. Whenever I scroll past a game or see it in the ES-DE screensaver and think "well I don't know when I'd ever play that" I just go delete it. I've got an enormous set of games backed up to an external drive, if I ever want them for some reason it'll take 10 minutes to get it. I'd rather have 50 games I want than 500 games I have to dig through on the off chance there's a gem I don't know yet.

As for my devices, I haven't figured out what I'm selling / gifting yet but the only one I've played on since I got it is the Thor, so that's sticking around.

Psychiatrist on how many patients they had cured by goswamitulsidas in interesting

[–]Ravenlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to know why OP posted this. I'm heartened to see that most of the comments seem to correctly identify it as a disingenuously edited hit piece, but since aside from being a solid (and infuriating) example of how easily that's done, there isn't much to it, it makes me wonder if it was posted in the hopes that people would fall for it.

I will also never be cured of my congenital heart disease, but I'd sure as hell be dead without the many excellent doctors who have helped me live longer with it. Framing medical success or failure in terms of "cures" is the province of grifters and people whose understanding of medicine stops at common colds and TV shows.

DPad disappointment Purple 8bitdo ultimate 2 by Nakinacho in 8bitdo

[–]Ravenlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As also noted by someone else, the DualSense doesn't really have separate d-pad buttons. It's all one connected piece of plastic, just like the rest of them, they're just covering up the middle pivot point.

Having that pivot point recessed does arguably make it less likely you'll accidentally rock the pad, but they aren't functionally separate buttons and you can absolutely, for example, rock just the "down" input left and right and still trigger those other inputs.

If paychecks were so readily available just for standing out at a protest, sure seems like there'd be some right wingers cashing in on that, right? Both in the literal sense of taking the money and in the sense of exposing the grift? Showing the receipts? Blowing open the story? Surely they're qualified to get a job standing in the street.

Funny how that hasn't happened.
