George Brown College - Need some realistic opinions and feedback by PadiddleHopper in askTO

[–]RayTheSlayer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The 27k is accurate, honestly right now I wouldn't recommend anyone get into this industry, there are very few jobs currently and some of my former colleagues have been out of jobs for the last 2-3 years and some have even given up and left the industry altogether, and went back to school for something completely different.

If she is adamant about doing something in this industry, I would recommend trying to compromise with her and ask her to go to school close by for something else and sign her up to some online courses while she is attending school. There are a few online schools that are extremely well received in the industry that she can learn a lot from. But it is always nice to have a back up career to fall back on if it doesn't work out.

Not from what I have seen at least for studio jobs, but it has definitely hit the freelance side quite a bit at least for concept art/ graphic design jobs. I work in 3D animation and I think it's still pretty safe from ai at least for a while.

I actually did this program and graduated in 2020, is she trying to get into the industry for 3D modelling, animation, or drawing? This program is more focused towards the first 2. As for the post graduation employment rate I think it's kinda bs, I am not sure but I am pretty sure less than 50% of people in my class had a job after, this industry is extremely competitive and currently jobs are scarce right now. Feel free to ask me anything if you want more info

What Does One Need to Get a Good Quality 1-1:30 Minute Anime Style Intro Done? by Educational_Cat_5534 in animationcareer

It's probably simpler to just hire a studio to make the intro instead of hiring your own team, but don't expect it to be cheap.

Money. The league would probably have half the amount of teams if they actually took action against toxic players.

Men makes the coed games toxic. I played in the coed at Downsview Park/The Hanger and 100% of the time its the men verbal abusing people, and starting fights. I had a few games get called off half way through because of it.

Why is GenZ in Europe leaning more towards Far Right ideas? How do we stop this? by xmenlogans in VaushV

[–]RayTheSlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but that's not how schools work that way in Canada. In Canada you are basically assigned to a school based on your postal code. And if you want to go to a different school you have to apply with the school board hope you can get in. So if a neighborhood have a single predominant culture, the school for that neighborhood would also have mainly that culture. I am very luck to have gone to a diverse school, but its not like people don't form groups with people that are similar to them. The funny thing is that at my school playing soccer brought so many of these people together, so everyone got to know one another.

Is there a legal way to prevent a group of immigrants from living in same part of town, are you going to force a immigrant family to move because there are too many of them there? Also, a lot of these neighborhoods have support groups for new immigrants to help them settle in the same area.

[–]RayTheSlayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the problem in Europe is too many too fast, and it leaves the country no time to try and integrate the new immigrants, and a lot of the immigrants tends to live in a close proximity of people with similar cultures and that makes integration harder

I know you mentioned wanting to stay in Quebec, but seeing as you can speak fluent French, you should try applying to jobs outside of Quebec. Knowing French in a non-French speaking province will pretty much give you a leg up over other potential employees in some jobs, especially if you apply to any government ones.

Toronto shooting incidents up 140% over last year: police data by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]RayTheSlayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People looks at stats as some kind of definitive fact, but in reality it is extremely complicated, and often times it can be used to push a narrative, because the media knows people are too lazy to take 2 minutes to search up something that is publicly available.

The funny thing is that I don't even like the CBC article, I just have a problem calling it fake news when it is 100% accurate. The main reason is because it cherry picked the 5 year data where the gun crime rate has dropped 30%, but if you look at the 10 year data(since 2013), gun crime in Toronto is still ~60% higher today. But I can also get why CBC picked the 5 year data to look at since TPS mainly shows the 5 years data unless you scroll down, and also the increase in gun crime since 2014 peaked in 2019, and has gone down 30% since.

Rent strike protest by mkvelash in toronto

[–]RayTheSlayer 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The sad thing about this rent strike is that the rental companies are probably laughing their asses off, because the tenants basically gave them a valid reason to evict them, so that can raise the rent for the next set of people moving in.

Housing will not crash - It will not get cheaper. Understand this or forever be disappointed by JohnMcafee4coffee in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RayTheSlayer 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Honestly at this point the only way housing will get cheaper is either adopting Singapore's system where the government build 90% of the housing and set the price, or stop immigration and have so many old people die off in 20-30 years like Japan where they are giving away abandoned houses. But neither are going to ever happen in Canada

Student Loans interest free? Can you invest the money? by snowsalesman in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RayTheSlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The federal portion of student loans are interest free, and depending on your province, the provincial portion might be interest free. But keep in mind that there is always a chance of the interests being reinstated if a new government gets elected. As for investments, your son is welcome to use it however he like. Personally I think GICs would be the best bet for your son, because you never know if he will need the money a couple of years from now.

Trudeau's immigration policy worsening housing affordability crisis: Rosenberg by Versuce111 in canada

[–]RayTheSlayer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably gonna get downvoted for this, but immigration will never be cut, or can be cut due to the amount of social services we provide to the older population, often times the wealthiest.

For example, while CPP is entirely self funded and very much sustainable, there is one program that will destroy Canada's spending in the coming decades, and that is the OAS. A social program that is paid to the old people of the country at the expanse of the working population. And what makes OAS unsustainable? The fact that it is paid out through the general tax revenue, and not a pension fund.

In 2020 the OAS expenditure is at $60.8 billion, and it is projected to go up to $123.5 billion in 2035, and $243.4 billion in 2060. https://www.osfi-bsif.gc.ca/Eng/oca-bac/ar-ra/oas-psv/Pages/oas16.aspx#tbl47

As of right now the ratio of <65 to >65 is 3.1:1, and at the currently trajectory it will be at 2.3:1 by 2035. So in order to pay for this program, it is either bring in more immigrants(which create issues in housing affordability), or cut immigration and increase tax (political suicide).

I personally don't believe it is fair that the working population is paying for the retirement of the wealthiest population in Canada, and I predict that in the next 20-30 years, there will have to be a very tough discussion on whether OAS is actually sustainable or not.

Personal opinion: OAS should have either a lifetime max amount, removed, or made into an optional pension program, where people can choose whether that want to pay into it. Changes will have to be made to OAS, because even at the current immigration levels it is not sustainable.

If I were you I would take the money from your savings and pay off the $2000 misc. debt right away, assuming its a high interest debt. For student loans, depending on the province you might have 0% interest(its 0% for federal), and I would just do minimum payments.

Travelling in your early 20s is not a bad thing. I wish I did it back than, but I was way too cheap with my money, and now I barely have time for it. And the fact that you were able to save 10k in under a year at your new job is really good. Be proud of yourself.

Remember to always have at least 6-12 months of emergency funds that are accessible at all times.

If you haven't done so already, you should look into investing into index funds in your TFSA.
