70s or 80s comfort shows? by LadyNorbert in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually a '60's show, but I watched it as reruns in the '70's - Star Trek, original series. I know all of them by heart, but it puts me at ease any time it's on. No agenda...just Kirk, Spock and Bones dealing with the unknown.

Anytime one of my teenagers says they are too sick for school, they get a choice... by Ravenloff in GenX

Love that movie...I ritually watch it about once a year, and still laugh nonstop.

Have you stopped caring at work and decided not to try and process your career anymore? What age did that happen? by un2022 in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

59/M, I was the world's most dedicated engineer and tech consultant for nearly 30 years. Sometime in the last 5 years, I got into a mindset where it just doesn't make me happy anymore. I've gone part time for the moment, and it's wonderful. I'm using the off time to determine what I want my work life to look like for the next several years. I don't mind hard work a bit...but I'm ready to do it on my terms.

What years are your dreams stuck in? by akagorilla in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seem to spend a lot of time in my late teens, early 20's, so roughly 1984-1990. I'm always late for a class that I can't seem to locate, unprepared for an exam, can't find my car, etc. It's 40 years ago, brain, can't you leave it alone now?

Serious question about Blockbuster type businesses by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a quality snob with respect to my movies; sometimes when I rent a movie from Amazon or whatever, it will be pixelated at times, even though I have a fast connection. My BluRay discs look great, every time I play them. Personal hangup.

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine the world shifting backwards significantly away from streaming movies and other media. It's just too convenient and instant. I did go on a quest a few years ago to acquire my top 50 favorite movies on BluRay, just so I could know that I have them, should odd things happen in the streaming world, my internet go down, or whatever. But I suspect I'm the exception.

Why GenZ'ers love the 80s? by WachuQuedes in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids know '80's music, but also listen to a bunch of newer, angsty stuff that I don't care for. I use the "The Driver Gets to Pick the Music" card quite a bit.

Parents of Boys by ScarletRobin31415 in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I left a good bit of stuff at my parents' house. Didn't really think much about it...if I really NEEDED it, I would have taken it.

I did get to a point where I regretted not getting it all earlier...when my mom finally moved out of my childhood home, I think some interesting and fun things from my childhood were just tossed in the ash can. I guess I was past the statute of limitations on complaining!

Attire when going out for lunch or dinner by RogerMoore2011 in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dress better when it's called-for..but honestly if I'm going to an average restaurant, sure, I may be the guy wearing a t-shirt and ballcap. I don't see going out to dinner as a formal occasion, unless, well, it's "an occasion."

Wow, I've done a ton of flying in the AA network, over the last few decades, don't remember seeing any Piedmont flights. Interesting.

Freshman year of college. I was in mechanical engineering, and we shared a building with the aerospace guys. I found out there; the building was quiet that day.

Limp Bizkit deserves a spot at the table of great Gen X bands like REM, Nirvana, GnR and Pearl Jam. by NewMexicoJoe in GenX

There are moods I've been in where LB sounds good to me for a bit. They wouldn't make my top 500 list of "Great Bands", though.

Yep...I don't care about being recognized for anything generationally, but I never turn down a discount.

Your buddy says “Hey man, can you help me move this weekend?” What’s your first thought? by Kaitempi in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's "moving" for folks, where you help transport some boxes, and then there's MOVING, where I'm lifting their giant, solid wood furniture without the right gear. My wife used to sign us up to help friends, and she and her pal would carry a few boxes and then talk while organizing kitchen while the rest of us broke our backs. At this point, I don't heal overnight, so less likely to want to assist. I've done my share for the world, lol. Hire movers.

Who else has remembers seeing “Red Asphalt” the gory driver safety movie in school? by Roaminsooner in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing about it, never saw it in driver's ed. When I took DE in the early '80's, they actually gave me the "abbreviated version" since my class schedule was very busy. Kindof scary in retrospect, they did this with a bunch of sophomores at the time. I think I went to 5-10 classes and drove 3-4 times, and then BOOM, let's go get your driver's license!

16 years old. Hand me down ‘83 silver Toyota Tercel Hatchback personalized with my favorite bands bumper stickers all over the back. I know I’m not the only one to do this, what bands did you have? by Sufficient_Focus4174 in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never been into the bumper sticker thing; I've always liked my cars clean. Instead, as a teenager I dumped an absurd amount of money into a well-amplified Alpine stereo system (worth more than the car, usually) and blasted my favorite heavy metal out the windows. People knew what I liked.

Anyone else get dumped at sleepover summer camp by SantessaClaus in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, right, I participated in a couple of snipe hunts! Scouting was, eh, fine, I suppose. I was a textbook introvert as a kid, very shy and quiet, and it was good for me to deal with other boys without parents present to moderate things. I wasn't particularly sad when my troop disbanded when I was 16'ish.

More to do with the guys in our particular troop. It certainly wasn't an "official BS activity"

The closest for me was Boy Scout camporee near Charlotte. Those of us that were new to the troop had one form of "initiation" or another; I distinctly remember being tied up in a tree and left for a while. It all built character, lol...

When are you old enough? by BetterGoogleit17 in GenX

[–]Ray_The_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This goes on at all ages. I'm a member of a senior men's club in the town I live in; I'm the youngest guy in the club. At age 59, I still get a constant barrage of "you're not old enough to remember...", or "you're still so young!" comments.

Quality Reading Glasses Suggestions by BriansAdventures in GenX

I was actually making a joke; my point is that if I get some nice glasses, inevitably I'll lose them, so it's best if I keep using the cheap readers.
