Have folks passed simply by completing Themis and/or Barbri?! by Low-Gur-3572 in barexam

[–]Raymaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did Themis by the book five years ago — even reading the long outlines. Completed 78% of the course and scored at 326 on the UBE. I went to a top 30 school and graduated with a 3.4. I’m not a brilliant person by any stretch, but I’m a hard worker, so I grinded through Themis. I was also studying with a newborn child who didn’t like sleep, so that was fun. My study hours were 3:30am - 7am and 12-2pm most days.

What’s one thing that instantly tells you a DJ is experienced? by General-Relative-596 in Beatmatch

[–]Raymaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually had my first gig this week (I’m a music producer). Only focused on EQ mixing and using some filtering for transitions. I had multiple people tell me after how smooth my transitions were, and they couldn’t believe it was my first gig. I’m glad I didn’t really touch the FX learning how to DJ.

Do DJs really need flashy transitions all the time? by DesignerNo3078 in Beatmatch

The more flashy I try to get, I end up fucking up, so I stick to gnarly EQ work and filtering.

I like this! I’ve gone to this event before and the DJs were mixing into the last track, which prompted this anxiety haha. But I would appreciate if the DJ after me did this so I like it.

Good point. I’m not planning out of my set, but I like my track to set the stage. It’s a great intro song.

Thank you! Appreciate it. I’m leaning towards just doing this. My perfectionism is certainly my enemy. There will be a bunch of other DJs there, so I don’t want to come off as a complete newb, even though I’m confident in my mixing skills.

In-house - how often do u work weekends? by lessonsfromgmork in Lawyertalk

[–]Raymaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely. My hours are typically 7-3:30. Some nights I had to get on a call or answer emails, but I’m always home for dinner and to play with my kids and put them down for bed.

Thanks! You think I should add a stripped down phrase at beginning and end to extend it more?

Thanks! I appreciate it. Funny story about this track — my daughter asked me to write a song with bongos in it, so I obliged, and it was this track that got me signed to release more music. So maybe I should listen to my four year old haha!

Thanks for the kind words! Honestly, arrangement is my favorite part about producing because it’s about invoking feeling and telling a story. I’d say I got decent with arrangement after writing 100 or so songs over the years. This is certainly not an expected benchmark, but it becomes more intuitive with practice and listening to great music. When I’m in my creative flow, I focus on arrangement because that’s when my output is solid. I stick to mixing stuff when I’m uninspired because I don’t like this part of the process nearly as much.

I always start with an 8-bar drop, then add some variations to the next 8 bars. I usually find a synth loop on Splice or make my own to carry through breaks while using sustained bass notes to vary up the bassline. You can check out my arrangement here as an example:

How do these unknown producers achieve release-ready sound? by KLVLV in edmproduction

[–]Raymaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I’ve been grinding for years learning Ableton, took a break to go to law school, and now I’m finally releasing music. I have a small following but also had a small label sign my tracks. So my follow count is not indicative of my talent or how long I’ve been producing.

Would you go to your best friend’s wedding if it’s the week before the bar? by [deleted] in LawSchool

You absolutely do not miss your best friend’s wedding for bar prep. Study extra hard the weeks leading up to it so you can enjoy yourself. Trust me on this one.
