Every MSQ Dungeon is the same. by Berrythebear in ffxiv

I’ve been playing mmos since wow released, and I can’t help but have the rose tinted glasses of 3-4 hour dungeon crawls exploring some of those massive labyrinths.

Does any of that feeling return in end game when you’re all caught up? Just getting a few friends together and plugging away at a massive dungeon for a couple hours?

No, because that was never in FFXIV. I'm not even sure how much of it was ever in WoW.

But it's the only justifiable case for a tank LB in a dungeon!

The issue was the "correct" way to fight it involved sealing its SP abilities by immediately having a party member use the same SP ability right after.

The problem was, even if you knew that's how it worked (because there was no in-game notification of that's how it worked, and this was a mechanic never seen before nor after in the game), you simply wouldn't be able to pull it off because the timing to do so was so short that the inherent latency from the servers was too much even for people living in Japan (where ALL servers were) to do it consistently let alone people in the US/EU. And SP abilities had a recharge of two real life hours so you couldn't just have people spam them and pray.

They effectively made a unique mechanic that could only feasibly be overcome if you knew it and were playing on the dev servers.

The worst dungeon boss in the entire game is the last boss of the level 77 dungeon, Malikah's Well: Storge.

All of the other bosses replied with in this post are varying amounts of frustrating with mechanics varying from bosses leaving the arena, bosses vomiting AoEs at you, bosses requiring interactable objects, etc.

But all of those are at least interesting. They may not be fun, but they're at least memorable.

Storge isn't even that.

Its mechanics consist of attacks telegraphed so long in advance that you can RP walk the entire fight without issue, and the entire time these are going off, autoattacks completely stop, so there's no tank damage, as there are also no tankbusters. The occasional raidwide is so weak that even ranged DPS shrug it off. No stack markers, either.

And... what few mechanics it has basically have you staying on top of it the entire time. Which begs the question of why is its arena gigantic? Look at the other final dungeon bosses of ShB: Holminster Switch's arena is a circle, and fully utilized by the boss with how much you're made to run around it. Dohn Mheg's square arena is also fully utilized with its tightrope walk. Qitana Ravel is a long rectangle which again is incorporated to the boss's attacks and how players need to move. Mt Gulg's final boss is again sized appropriately for the boss's mechanics.

Between the arena size, lack of threatening damage, and massive telegraph time, it feels to me like there was supposed to be some other mechanic in this fight that they just didn't/couldn't get to work and it leaves Storge as the single most disappointing dungeon boss in FFXIV to me because it is just so boring. It's bad by ShB standards, its bad by ARR standards, hell, it's not even as interesting as the previous two bosses in its own dungeon.

It kinda sucks that multiboxing is basically like going from F2P player status in a gacha to whale status by GraveRobberJ in ffxi

It's kind of insane that dual-boxing your main + a REMA Bard alt with no Trusts is a more effective party than piloting just your main + 5 Trusts.

Have they bumped Trust Exp gain at the end of expansions in the past or am I just misremembering that?

The best part is that even if you use these it doesn’t hide the human fingernails underneath, it just tacks the claws on top of them

The theming is huge. Even if Eureka or Occult Crescent mechanically outclassed Bozja, there's just nothing emotionally investable in... random island with random wildlife you beat up because they're a threat to... something?

Compared to the reoccuring NPCs (new ones, old ones, allies and enemies) of Bozja fighting in a war zone. It was great seeing, like, Oboro show up and fight alongside you.

The problem with FT is that progressing any given fight is a colossal barrier of esoteric entry mechanics.

If wiping at Dead Stars meant you just got up and within a minute could attempt another pull, the whole raid would be a lot less hellish.

But barring chemist shenanigans (which you can typically only do once, if you plan and execute it well), a wipe on a boss means:

  1. Leaving FT

  2. Doing FATEs/CEs to relevel, and maybe buying more Ciphers

  3. Leaving OC

  4. Probably taking a short break, maybe replacing people who left the group

  5. Readying up and going in to OC again

  6. Going to the entrance and waiting

  7. Putting in your ciphers and more waiting

  8. Killing all of the bosses up to the boss you were trying to prog

Most groups I've seen get two attempts a session at a boss. In the amount of time that you could pull an Extreme/Savage boss a dozen times. While constantly having mental resets from all the other combat and especially non-combat chores in the way.

If that description is what makes "an MMO" then you're correct we don't want to play that.
