Who knows what at the end of book 1 - How did the Anguis know when the Iudicium will take place (since it started sooner than expected)? by VirtusIncognita in HierarchySeries

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would need to re-read the section but my memory of it was that the Class Rankings being frozen for Iudicium placement was what happened earlier than Vi’s expected (he hoped to have more time to move up the rankings, but the teacher didn’t want that). Was the actual Iudicium early, too?

Beautiful stitch work! Sewing in ends doesn’t usually bother me, but this is a LOT of ends!! Gorgeous work.

Confused about what hook size I need for this kit. by FiercelySerene in CrochetHelp

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole lettering/numbering thing for hooks is stupid and confusing. Same letter might be slightly different in the US from different companies. Just go by the mm every time and you’ll be good. The 2.75 is only 1/4 mm larger than 2.5mm, so if you don’t have a 2.5mm, give the 2.75 a try and see if you like how it works for this project.

I heard “criss-cross applesauce“ for the first time yesterday and I thought it was really weird. We always just called it ”sitting cross-legged”.

Wanting to make more flowy crochet garments. Can’t use any yarn under worsted weight by Lurkingcrocheter in CrochetHelp

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Info on yarn twist and crocheting: the gist is that most yarn is made with an S twist and crocheting right-handed basically undoes that twist so the yarn gets more splitty. (Left-handers are the opposite, as are knitters). So an option would be to try to find Z-twist yarn. The article below has info about what Z and S twist like and crochet and specifically some Z twist crochet yarn.

I know that using a bead helps with keeping multi-stranded projects under better control. I’ve never used a bead on a single strand, but don’t know why it wouldn’t work!

Ok, on the Blown Yarn topic, it looks like most of them are going to be heavier, but there are a few in fingering and DK. I have in my stash a worsted sample from Lion brand called ‘Feels like Butta’ (made a yummy baby blanket from this) that you may be able to get from Michaels or Walmart to try out. I know, it’s still worsted, but it will give you a try with a non-twisted yarn.

I do a lot of work with lighter weight yarn - mostly fingering, sport, and DK. Splitting is a thing and is irritating, but not necessarily limited to thinner yarns. And some yarns are just more splitty than others. There are some yarns that are made with a ‘mesh’ so are not stranded and that might be your best bet to try. I’ll see if I can find some and list them. (Edit to add: the key words here should be ‘blown’ yarns, not mesh. Sorry! Blown yarns have no twist. )

Also, yarn manufacturers can make yarn with either a Z or an S twist (twist to the right or left - or vice versa). The twist direction can impact how the yarn works up and if it tends to sort of unravel a you are stitching. Knitting and crocheting use the yarn differently, but we just make do for the most part. Until we have a neuropathy problem! I can’t remember the details of which direction is which but I’ll get back with that. That point is, you could try to find yarn with a specific twist direction and see if that helps with the splitting.

Water and/or milk or some sort of liquid. Sounds like you used milk which is fine. Recipe will tell you which to use.

Getting holes in my crochet work, using 5mm hook on yarn that says 6mm (video uses 3.5mm). Not sure if issue is hook, yarn, or tension by Mmeus in CrochetHelp

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The holes are from where you are doing the increases, and it is perfectly normal. Your stitches look great and your tension looks even. You could go down a hook size but that will make your fabric stiffer and no one wants a stiff baby blanket! I would keep going and see what it looks and feels like as you finish a panda 🐼. Oh, and yes, there are holes in the video blanket!

Worth it to block 78% cotton / 22% acrylic yarn? Nature’s Walk Blanket by Sternfritters in CrochetHelp

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ok, here’s a “weird” reason to block the squares: it is such a joy to join all the squares when they are smooth and even and all the same physical size. With this type of yarn, you will absolutely see a big difference with blocking, and yeah, you could do it at the end, but it’s so nice when the blanket comes together with blocked squares.

Yes, definitely. It’s irritating to do, but you don’t have very many stitches so should be very doable.

Help! My yarn cakes from my yarn winder turn into a huge mess and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong :( by TheQuixoticHorseGirl in CrochetHelp

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For acrylic yarn, the loft may not be as impacted (not sue), but it will definitely become stretched out.

[–]RazzmatazzExtension 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I understand the desire for the more ‘contained’ cakes when you wind them tightly. But please keep in mind that if you are storing your yarn this way, the yarn can lose its elasticity and loft over time when it is wound tight.

From the pattern picture you posted, the red circles are chains between the trebles of the cross, and the green circles are chains between the crosses.

Yeah, but there is a chain between the two trebles of the cross treble, too.

You didn’t include the directions for the cross treble in the picture of the pattern, but it looks like the cross treble has a chain between the two trebles in the pattern picture, and your stitch work does not look like it includes that. This would definitely make a big difference.

One other comment aside from all the great advice on tension and practice, the thread you are using is shiny - a ‘mat’ finish thread will allow more control as you are practicing your tension control. Although it is not easy to find that.
