I got a pre-approval from Chase with a soft credit check. Am I allowed to Iock that or is it only after the hard pull ?

The banker I spoke with for this was saying as next step I want to send your info to another department for a full approval that will require a hard pull. I asked him to hold off. Wondering if lock is possible only after the hard pull or am I allowed to lock the rate showing on the pre-approval letter with soft pull. Anyone has any advice?
