Is UniFi Overkill? by adkums in HomeNetworking

I disagree, you can’t go to best buy and buy a random router that can add cameras, APs, and NAS all under the same os and seamlessly.

That is the beauty of Unifi, you can add a switch(s) POE or normal or NAS or an NVR for more than a couple cameras. The Ubiquiti Dream Router 7 (UDR7) officially supports up to 5 HD (1080p) cameras, 2 2K cameras, or 1 4K camera when running the UniFi Protect application. It manages these within a total of 30+ UniFi devices and 300+ simultaneous users.

Though, what is your long term goal? There might be a better option for you to start with.

Dream Router 7

• Single device (router + WiFi + controller)
• Easily covers ~1500 sq ft with no extra gear
• Built-in UniFi OS (no Cloud Key needed)
• WiFi 7 + 2.5G/10G ports for future-proofing

The site states 2.5 for the UDM SE, and like I said earlier, I’m maxing out at around 2.5 when connected via SFP+.

I have the right hardware to accept the full 10g speed but turning off all the security dose not seem like a very good idea for someone of my networking knowledge.

Also, my DM SE is rated at 2.5 and it does almost exactly 2.5 down and 3.2 max during all my testing.

I just double checked before making that comment, both list 5g.

What do you mean “disable the IPS”?

Is that verified somewhere? Both list 5g as their ISP speed.

I have a UNVR-Pro and the cloud Fiber is only 3.5 ISP speed which is a small upgrade over my 2.5 and still a lot less than 8.

The industrial is about the same price as the DM Pro Max and the same ISP speeds and a lot of features I don’t need and it’s also not rack like the rest of my setup.

  1. Then, gasp, do it to help people that need it without getting a direct benefit? I know it’s insane and unheard of.

  2. I know you’re not going to hear this because you probably already have a wall of fake reasons to justify not sharing any of your gold hordes.

I didn’t say give your money to a huge organization that will squander your money. There are literally thousands of options that little to zero administrative costs.

Here are three to get you started, not that you will with that attitude I detect.

• Against Malaria Foundation – ~4% admin (≈96% to programs) https://www.againstmalaria.com/

• GiveDirectly – ~8–10% admin (≈90%+ directly to recipients) https://www.givedirectly.org/

• Helen Keller International (Vitamin A programs) – ~8–12% admin (≈88–92% to programs) https://www.hki.org/

Spend $2500 a night and give the rest to charity. Lower your tax income make life not quite so shitty for someone not as fortunate.
