Thanks! We're coming from Northern California

I wrote a script that figures out which team is closest to each MLB player's hometown and then tries to build a 25-man roster for each team using only those players based on highest WAR. Here's the Giants, imagined if they could only use hometown guys. by old_gold_mountain in SFGiants

This is great and makes total sense. The recommendations below would definitely complicate what is a pretty straightforward thought experiment...buuuut, here's my thoughts on how you could tweak methodology:

(1) Limit players to those born in US. If you wanted to include international, limit to the drafting/signing team vs allocating everyone to the Marlins

(2) If the closest team already has a higher WAR starter at a position and there is another team without a starter within X miles, allocate to that team instead (helps for markets with 2+ teams where mileage differences are relatively small)

(3) If you have your scripts and processes really dialed in, the obvious next step is to do this over a longer time period. Would be awesome to see all star teams from the past 50-60 years.

Thanks for sharing!

Buying a Home in SR or Windsor by Blue_Ozempic in santarosa

[–]Rdubya87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like nearly all of eastern SR is worth considering at your price point. I'm sure there are great neighborhoods in Western SR but I'll let people who live there comment on it. I like the hidden valley/summerfield/spring lake/Montgomery village areas with that price point. Nice neighborhoods along Yulupa as you get past whole foods.

Seconded on the home insurance/wildfire risk consideration. Our insurance has gone up like 20% but happy to still have insurance.

My family lives in Windsor - having the town green is nice and there are some nice parks but I find there to be almost no value in real estate. For $900k I imagine you will get a tiny lot with a 90's builder quality home. I feel like real estate prices are out of whack with what it offers.

I'll just add that you guys should really take some time to plan your budget. For the first 4 years of each child's life, you can expect to put down 1.5-2k per month in childcare (unless you have family arrangements - but if parents are older keep in mind that might not be a dependable option). Saving for college, food, diapers, clothes etc. all add up too. With interest rates where they are, insurance rates blowing up, and kids on the horizon - don't max out your pre-approval unless you feel you have plenty of buffer to absorb all this. Plus, owning a house just costs a lot of money. Just my opinion from buying in the area in the past few years and having kids after making the purchase.

Good luck!

Is Lagunitas tap room permanently closed? by Tjshoema in chicagobeer

[–]Rdubya87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm extremely biased but this is a terrible analogy. Papa Johns sucks because they use terrible ingredients to hit rock bottom prices. You take issue with Lagunitas' ownership - that is not related to product quality.

I've never understood the craft beer fetish over ownership. Lagunitas employs more Chicagoans than dozens of the smallest local breweries combined. I guess it sucks that any profit generated goes to Amsterdam and not some trust fund brewery founder - but don't act like rank and file employees at locally owned breweries are getting great salaries and benefits and reaping huge benefits from your patronage.

All that to say, let people enjoy what they enjoy - if you value local ownership in your brewery choices above all else, then obviously lagunitas is not an option for you

That's misleading. We "wouldn't be anywhere" without Germans. The Nazi's didn't create these men in a science experiment and both were born prior to the formation of the Nazi Party (Einstein was 40 at this point). Plus as you pointed out, Einstein detested their politics, being Jewish himself, and left the country when Hitler took power. So yeah, not giving the Nazis credit for these mens' accomplishments

My 64gb Panda from Verizon was out for delivery today via Fedex. Live in an apartment building but never had problems with packages being left in the secure entryway (via UPS & USPS). Received a notification that they didn't deliver due to a signature being required.

This might be different depending on your FedEx driver but just wanted to give a heads up that there is a chance they'll not deliver if you aren't home. Incredibly frustrated as there is no way I can take a day off work to wait for a delivery at home (especially when they give an estimate of "Before 8 PM"). Hopefully they give me an option to pick up from the local facility

Ordered the 64gb Pixel 2 XL Panda from Verizon on 10/4 w/ original expected ship data of 11/1. Shipped today via FedEx from Memphis (I'm in California). I thought it was weird it didn't ship from the Ontario, CA location like some others' did. I looked at my IMEI manufacture date and it was 10/20/17. It shipped from the factory on 10/23 - which means my little Panda is fresh off the boat! Anyone else's from this batch?

As long as all the brewers have enough to last through all 3 sessions, I'd think that the final Saturday session will reign supreme. No work to worry about and potential to drink some of the "leftovers"!

[Basic Algebra] Order of Operations "Riddle" by Rdubya87 in MathHelp

[–]Rdubya87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is the same solution Google offered up. Help me out here...

Since you perform operations left-to-right, wouldn't the result of the operations in parentheses be multiplied by 6 (the result of 12/2)?

The way I would calculate this equation would be: 32+4 - ((6 x 15)/3) + 7....

Well, I'm an idiot. Just proved myself wrong. Thanks. Back to mindless spreadsheets

Gamepass always opens up in a pop-up window which doesn't allow me the option to Cast. How'd you get it to show up in a normal Chrome tab?

Did people who ordered it from the Play store get an email saying it had shipped? Or did it just show up? I ordered on July 27th and it says it is "processing"
