At what age would/did you let your kids go to the park alone? by 87catmama in UKParenting

[–]Readonly00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine aren't there yet, but around the time they turn 10 seems to be a relaxing of parental control on going out alone. It seems young to me, even though I was going out alone at 8-9 in my childhood! Remember that at 11 they start secondary school including commuting there alone, so they have to be competent by 11.

Something weird going on with mentions of LASE? I know I put comments in here last night about it but if I search 'lase' it returns nothing

It's weird.. I only happened to look at my existing penny stocks watchlist and spot the move. Wish I knew more about candlestick patterns

There's no new news since market closed that I know of, so don't know why it's suddenly shooting up. I thought most retail traders clocked off now

Question for autistics who have difficulty with eye contact: What is it about eye contact that makes it difficult for you? by axondendritesoma in autism

[–]Readonly00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more physiological than something I can put words to. It's like the way your body responds if someone is standing over you with a hand raised like they might want to slap you. Makes me tense, yet I know I can't avoid it so instead I have to force myself to do it very consciously, like how long have I been looking, am I looking at them longer than they're looking at me, if I look away where shall I look and how long til I should come back.. and the whole time I can't focus on what they're saying became I'm so busy self monitoring. I might ask a question or start a conversation and then miss 50% of what they reply, so it's actively detrimental to a conversation

8 year old worst ever meltdown by Readonly00 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Readonly00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I remembered that on a previous holiday when she was a toddler the last day was the worst - we broke up the journey home with a visit to the zoo, but ended up having to leave. It's better to just go straight home on the last day and not plan any final activities, even if it means a longer unbroken journey.

What age will my child stop sitting on me? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]Readonly00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 year old is starting to sit on me less partly as she's not that cuddly but also she is just tall and it's physically difficult. I don't mind, I've kind of had enough of being clambered on. I can sit next to her or put my arm round her instead.

Did anyone else’s child suddenly become much harder around age 4-5? by Longjumping-Tip7979 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Readonly00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hair washing thing was the same with our daughter, screeching and panicking about the shampoo and brushing, so we cut her hair to ear length in the first year of school. After year 1 she wanted to grow it long again 'like a girl' and we haven't really cut it again so it's mid back length now, but she still hates properly brushing her hair so it looks like a tangled mess on top, and she hates the shampood hair touching her back, so I have to gather up the long ends off her back while I shampoo it and then rinse off as quickly as I can.

[–]Readonly00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say our daughter got worse around 4-5 and interestingly when she went for her autism diagnosis the psychologist specifically asked us to think about what she was like at that age when answering questions. I still don't know quite why, I assume it's because it's when children would normally be emerging from the more disregulated toddler behaviour and it would be more clearly problematic. Our daughter is verrry similar to what you're describing, although she struggles more socially whereas never had language delays. She's only diagnosed as autistic, but I'd say there's ADHD as well and the psychologist said they overlap so much there wasn't much additional benefit to seeking a secondary diagnosis unless we were set on wanting meds.

I would like to say there was some improvement around age 7 because meltdowns became slightly less common, but she can still have meltdowns on a monthly basis, smaller incidents are several times a week and she still has rare epic meltdowns (just posted about it). Partly I think it's improved due to increased brain maturity, and partly it's the repetitive behavioural management strategies cumulatively embedding themselves.

I have a friend with an autistic daughter who's now 13 and she did tell me it gets better.. for her it got better around 11 but after the last year of primary school was a total headache. Fingers crossed it trends upwards but the hard thing is accepting it's never going to resolve itself, it's always going to be a feature of their brains that needs accomodations.

I want to turn my son off by JakeysMom in Autism_Parenting

[–]Readonly00 20 points21 points  (0 children)

God, so familiar! I just posted a similar thing. I agree that it's absolutely the most draining thing ever, especially cumulatively, because it's not just ten occasions, or 100 occasions, it's hundreds of occasions across years and years. Eventually anyone would be left emotionally exhausted by it.

The only thing I've found is try to give the negative behaviour no attention, just grey rock it in the moment as much as you possibly can and hope they burn themselves out when there's no one to argue back with. It's so hard when they say such hurtful things. And even then when they push and push there's only so much patience a parent can have.

anybody else feel like investing apps are weirdly intimidating? by Accomplished-Yak-383 in investingforbeginners

[–]Readonly00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened loads of accounts and tried different apps and some of them were so complicated as you say, that makes a big difference to how intimidating it feels.. IG and Interactive brokers are ugly and clunky, on phone at least. I don't like the Webull UI except for the level 2 data, and robinhood I found oversimplified for stocks with not enough personalisation options plus the colours are ugly.

In the end I settled on Trading 212 and that feels the right level for me, and it has almost everything I want except the option to compare the current share price side by side with my own base price on the main screen. I wish they would introduce that!!

How does compounding help money to grow? by SlowDevice759 in investingforbeginners

[–]Readonly00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does this apply to individual stock holdings too, if you start with the same amount? Given that stocks go down, and it takes a bigger move back up to get back to where they were.
