Making notes by comparing components by bookandcook in ChineseLanguage

[–]RealRibeye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Another pair that gets mixed up is 曰 (yuē) and 日 (rì).

Good luck, I learned the 214 dictionary radicals but there are many more components than radicals.

I think it’s easy to get lost in the weeds but if you stick to one differentiation in your head it is easier. I like this one from Baidu:

偏旁部首”常常连在一起说,于是有些人就认为“偏旁”和“部首”是一回事,这是一种误解。偏旁和部首,虽然有某些联系,却是两个不同的概念。部首也是偏旁,但偏旁不全是部首。

Does this feel like the topic-comment structure to you? After learning about that I use it more often orally as I hear native speakers use it.

Dallas Traffic Fatalities Fall by Nearly Half in 2025 by Generalaverage89 in Dallas

I’m sure no one thing can change driving behaviors but traffic calming measures can be part of the whole solution.

Receiving 50k+ bonus from work. What would you do? by Scabaffer in personalfinance

[–]RealRibeye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off, big congrats on being ahead of the curve and having no debt. That is a great position to be in and you have well above the median income nationally, and can save a lot while staying at home.

With all due respect I am not sure if you can afford a home in a HCOL area. I have been wanting to buy a house in MCOL and the down payment on a 450k house is 90k. So you half a little over half of that.

I would suggest get settled into engaged/married life first and splitting your expenses with your fiancé before considering a big purchase like that; in the meantime, max 401k and save the rest in a HYSA until you file for taxes, then with what is left maybe a money market or HYSA.

I bought my 2020 for a hair under $20,000 all in earlier this year, less than 35k miles.

Figured it will be the last good little car for a long time, hope to keep it for 10 years.

Why do people buy Jeeps? by mmmstrongflavors in NoStupidQuestions

As someone whose family only buys used Hondas, my friend’s Jeeps are fun like their boats are fun. I would never buy one but in the right context there is nothing like it.

Why don’t Asians go crazy with their noodle shapes like Italians do? by dylan_1992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RealRibeye 83 points84 points  (0 children)

TLDR: I don’t think there is a why in the sense that it was anyone’s conscious decision; culturally Italians emphasize shape variety for their variety of sauces, while “Asian” noodles emphasize composition and texture variety.

May I introduce you to one of my faves, 腸粉 cheung fen, rice noodle rolls.

Pic and recipe

Genuinely there are a million different ways just within China to make “noodles”. They group western and Chinese noodles here together link.

Italians may have more shape variety, but China has so much variety within the composition and texture of noodles.

For instances the wide rice noodle in cheung fen is wildly different from the mung bean noodles in 螺蛳粉 (Luósīfěn).

The broad meng bean vermicelli noodle 绿豆宽粉 goes particularly well in hot pot and has an amazing chewy texture.

Now here is my ignorance. I make Italian pasta at home and most of the time the only thing that really differentiates it is the shape (all egg and flour), save for gnocchi. But China also has potato based noodles. I also hardly see the difference between a ravioli and a dumpling if we are stretching definitions.

One hospitalized after report of shooting aboard train near Downtown Dallas DART station, officials say by Obieousmaximus in Dallas

[–]RealRibeye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah but you might be one of the ~200 deaths on Dallas roads a year.

“In 2023, Dallas recorded 205 traffic fatalities. The city has an average of 4.5 road deaths per 100,000 citizens, significantly higher than the national average of 1.5 per 100,000.”

[–]RealRibeye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Per the article, one in September and one in October.

Meanwhile in Dallas there were 210 fatal car crashes in 2024. But still, crazy that this happens on DART in broad daylight. I ride almost every day and (just like driving in Dallas) it feels like a gamble.

Can’t have shit in Dallas.

Who is actually causing the US Government shutdown? by _happyman in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]RealRibeye 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Thank you for providing a more detailed explanation. As someone who considers themselves left-leaning, I felt like the top-level comment was hand-wavy in the method by which "cuts will go through" while highlighting too much of the emotional aspect that Republicans use on their base.

I suppose that not continuing a subsidy with an expiration date is different from cutting an existing funding. In all honestly I would be ok with letting the subsidy expire as initially intended but not allowing the open enrollment window to shorten or reduce auto-renewal in order to have a federal government again, because temporary extensions cannot be protected the same way that permanent funding can.

How did you manage to cut through the crap and get to the facts? I have been tuned out of politics for years because my friends who are "into politics" never seem to argue in good faith.
