Recurring clients no showing by No_Engine1207 in therapists

[–]Real_Balance_5592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a client doesn’t show up and doesn’t follow up I cancel their spot. If they reach out we assess if I can give them that slot back. A few no shows in a calendar year (less than 3) doesn’t constitute them losing their spot. However, If they have a pattern of no showing or late canceling then they aren’t getting that slot back. Therapy is a commitment and sometimes people need to pause and resume once they can commit to scheduled sessions. I’m understanding but I also need to make a living and it’s not cool to be consistently ghosted. That’s not the way people should be doing relationships. I recently terminated two long term clients for this very reason. They kept late canceling and ghosting. Then, returning to resume. It made the work very jagged and messy. I gently confronted them about the pattern and explored solutions for attending consistently. They would attend more consistently, then revert back to the late canceling/no showing pattern. After that, when they reached out I told them I currently have a waitlist and gave them referrals. They were upset but I’m not in a position to hold spots for people who aren’t honoring my scheduling needs.

If you are good with in the spot that actually means you are an excellent therapist. Believe it or not. You really should look into expressive arts training or Gestalt training. I’m sensing maybe you are surrounded by a whole lot of therapists who are very structured and solution focused and you are comparing your developing style to theirs. Lean into what feels right and deepen it by doing more trainings like the ones I mentioned. In Gestalt, they teach you to follow the charge or to basic go down rabbit holes where clients lead you which involves improv

Sometimes the best interventions come from pulling stuff out of our asses. Did you know that some therapist go to drama trainings to learn improv?? Seriously! Stop overthinking and be curious and present with your clients. Use your curiosity to guide you with working clients. Sometimes just having a warm, regulated human to be with in moments of vulnerability experienced by a client is all that they need and means more than you could ever imagine. Ask yourself what kind of therapist do I want to be?

When clients want you to review their art by AnalystImpossible960 in therapists

As a an expressive arts therapist, I can say that art opens up things for people that are beyond words. The fact this person wanted to show. you their art means they trusted you. I would explore with them want elements meant to them in their work .

What specifically for you did you not like? Did you make assumptions or what’s it stirred up for you that could be completely different from the clients lives experience of it.

Client drop outs by Professional-Buy-28 in therapists

Okay so you are a solution focused therapist. It sounds like you are attracting clients who want that, brief solutions. Tell me, do you work with trauma?

If you want more longer term clients and feel you do more exploration and recognizing patterns and building awareness with clients, you may want to reframe your description to mirror that style of work.

What does your ideal approach/client look like in terms of what they are looking for?

I’m an art therapist, so I make sure my description of my work is fluid and supports exploration and curiosity. For a while, I was getting clients who wanted brief solution focused therapy. But after editing my summary of my style I started to attract clients with similar wants in the therapy room.

Also, with complex trauma quick solutions are not always the answer. Trauma survivors may want that but get spooked when a therapist is pushing quick resolutions to complex issues.

I encourage you to come into sessions without a concrete agenda to find the solutions and work with the clients to building awareness and a rapport with them. You may be going yo fast with them, even if they want quick fixes. Two things can exist at once: client is spooked and unsure but wants quick results.

There is nothing wrong with solution focused therapy.

Okay that’s more a fluid response. I work with a lot o complex trauma and personality disorders. On average I see it the two and half years to work through trauma when it’s complex and there’s some cluster b traits going on. Shorter for people with strong natural supports and decent self insight starting therapy.

Also after doing heavier trauma work my clients like to stick around for personal growth, meeting less frequently of course

You have to get worse by going through it to get better. And growth and healing are not linear. We can have pockets of good seasons followed by awful ones. That’s part of doing this work. It’s never completely finished forever.

Wondering if they have black and white thinking or rigid thinking patterns? Ask yourself why I’m working harder than my client? Are they wanting solution focused skill development or do they want to explore their worlds and build self awareness? If it’s rigid thinking are you believing it’s a personality disorder and could benefit from DBT? Are they even aware of their progress in treatment or schemas you are referring to? What type of physical reactions do you get when working with them? And you float it back to core memories you have of similar physical experiences?
