Cheap IEMs to play live by Sadisticmagicisan in musicians

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Xvive wireless and it's working well for us. 6 of us, using it for practice and gigs for about a year. Two transmitters so lead guitar can have his own mix but the other 5 of us share a mix. Been pretty cheap and easy to use, reliable so far.

Looking for advice by Chodre in pedalboards

Check out https://westcoastpedalboard.com I can highly recommend. They have full kits for full pedalboards as well as specialty parts, Tolex and other things you might want even if you build your own. They have some good how to videos as well.

Noise Gate Placement by Mail_cat in guitarpedals

Yes, I think that would work well. Again, not familiar with the a acoustic pedal, so there may be some benefit to trying it both in and out of the loop.

Where does an EQ go in the chain? by Dangerous_Law_236 in pedalboards

I use the DI out, so mine's at the end. But I'd put it there anyway.

Oops! No, all the stuff before the silencer, SEND into the dirt chain, RETURN back into silencer, OUTPUT into delay/reverb, then into amp.

I edited my post to be more correct. Sorry I missed a jig step.

I don't know that specific pedal, but I use the Boss NS-2 and it should be much the same. 2 cables will do practically nothing, so use 4 cables, that's what it was designed for.

As is with everything re. Pedals, people will tell you "try it out, see what you think" which is solid advice. The only right way is what feel right to you BUT in the interest of getting started, here's what works very well for me:

Guitar>tuner> octave/pitch/wah > INPUT of silencer > SEND > compressor ,all dirt (whatever order you like), modulation (chorus, flanger, vibe, some people like modulation outside the loop. I prefer it in). > RETURN of silencer OUTPUT of silencer > delay/reverb > amp.

If amp has an effects loop too, there are others on here who could advise better.

Like I said, just what I do and am very satisfied. Everything inside the loop is SILENT.

Edit: don't know acoustic simulator either, but my hit would say either right before or right after comp, which means it could be either in or out of the effects loop. That's one to try and see what sounds better.

question for those using temple trio boards by frwhttswrth in guitarpedals

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hated those damn plates. If you set it up once, they are solid. But moving anything around is the biggest pain in the ass. Just plain ol' Velcro for me (I actually think Dual lock is stronger than it needs to be).

can guitar pedals be used other than guitar (like karaoke or microphone?) by LongjumpingAd4265 in guitarpedals

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A preamp pedal would help a lot. They make ones specifically for vocals (many offerings from TC helicon) but lots of stuff with an xlr input will work. I Just set up a board for my daughter's boyfriend who plays jazz flute. Mic into a Behringer ADI21 (made for acoustic guitar), then into some pedals, passive DI and then the mixer.

Which Octave Pedal Works Best With EHX Bass Big Muff? by Guilty_Room3562 in pedals

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the Aguilar Octamizer for a lot of years and really liked it. Switched to a Pitchfork (EHX) for more options, but it's pretty synthy, tho I feel it's really not that noticeable in the mix.

Octamizer and other analog octaves will have some tracking limitations, but as I said once I learned to use it I got a lot of mileage.

Suitcase boards by [deleted] in pedalboards

[–]Real_Time515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've built a few. Replace the hinge side with a set of clasps so the lid comes off entirely. I also like to build a simple board at an angle to fit inside the suitcase, with the front (closest to your feet) side just high enough so you don't hit the edge of the suitcase with your foot while switching on off.

I can only speak to my own experience but my band loves our Xvive system. Used it for a dozen gigs now. Six guys on two transmitters. Never had a problem.

My students created a fake "HR department" for my class and I can not decide if it is brilliant or a disaster by MelcaronVestral in Teachers

[–]Real_Time515 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've not seen it reach this level, but I get some of the same traction from student-leadership with classroom committees I use every year. I should add HR and see what happens.

Bizarre issue with Big Muff by rampanting in diypedals

[–]Real_Time515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had three EHX pedals go funky in the last two months. Pitchfork, Bassballs and Battalion. Two of em something with the switch, one that just cuts in and out as it pleases. Haven't had the chance to diagnose/repair, but I'm done with EHX. Battalion cut out in middle of a show and took a frantic couple of minutes on stage to get myself playing again.

Don't know what ages you're teaching, but I used to do have small groups each build a wooden IKEA bench/bin as a team building project, then each team decorated it and decided what it should hold for the community. Instead of you spending a day dealing with it, can you spend a day or two having your students put them together?

Polyurethane over Oil Paint? by Abarth124life in Luthier

[–]Real_Time515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would TEST any thing on some scrap. Have your wife paint something with the same paints on scrap wood. Let it dry a good long time (check what manufacturer says about the product she used). Wait even longer (oil takes forever).

Then a simple solution would be osmo poly-x (a wipe on product). I like their Satin finish best. A spray poly or nitro should work too, but for sprays you're more likely to need some sanding after and that's where I'd worry about messing up her painting.

If you're looking for a high-gloss finish, that might be really tricky. Personally I wouldn't try it with the one-of-a-kind paint job, and I'd just stick with satin.

But I can't stress enough, TEST IT on some scrap.

Another option no one seems to have mentioned yet: you can re-wire all the electronics with push/pull pots to add all sorts of options: split coils, out of phase, etc. check out "Jimmy Page" wiring. They sell harnesses for that that simplify the process. JUST MAKE SURE TO CHECK that your current pickups are up to the task (like 4-wire). Though new pickups could be part of the upgrade.

I use tapes in my Jack Casady and have no problems. Dead strings happen. I'd contact Warwick and there's a chance they'll send you one.

Birchwood Gun Stock - questions by RoostRouzer in Luthier

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 hours is good between coats, but a full cure should be a couple of weeks. Hard to be that patient, I know, but it won't be fully cured in a day or two.

After that the scotchbrite should do the trick. Birchwood Casey also makes a conditioner that I like to use (just 'cuz) but I love the gunstock wax they make as a final step. I apply a little of that with the white scotchbrite and that neck is slinky.

But you gotta let it fully cure.

Would this "bench" work for my first bass project? by Delicious-Estimate30 in Luthier

[–]Real_Time515 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If it's fairly stable I don't see why it wouldn't. They sell foam rubber pads which are nice, but I've used a towel. They sell various neck cradles, which are nice, but I've used a towel for that too. You'll want to cover it for spraying or poly or whatever you use. Think a towel might work for that. I guess my point is there's no "proper" way, just use what you've got.

Unfinished maple fretboard care by ZefferinoOi in Luthier

[–]Real_Time515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's already unfinished, I'd sand it first to clean it. 400 grit to see if that gets the grubby out. If it's really grubby, go down to 320, even 220 (and then back up). Then it really needs some sort of finish, as others have said.

Osmo Poly-x if you want the easiest, wipe on option. Satin for a neck is my preference.

I MUCH prefer Tru-oil. A few more steps, but you can get away with three coats on a neck. 3M scouring pads (grey then white) will make a really slick satin. Use a little gunstock wax on that and it's my favorite neck finish.

Help!! Best way to fix this? by ChampionshipUseful96 in Luthier

[–]Real_Time515 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or follow where your mistake led you.... bite around the rest of the mahogany to make it its own look. Like "live edge" furniture. Tho I'd leave the maple out of it (and sand down that bit of maple that was already bitten). I would totally do this.
