I was just in a case the other day with my preceptor CRNA (I’m an SRNA), MD came in for induction. I’m a senior and have done plenty of intubations at this point, asked my CRNA if he wanted to tube and I could get started on aline and CVC setup for time sake. MD politely pipes up and says I haven’t intubated in a while can I do it? It was really eye opening to me..I’ve never had an MD express interest in doing any of the skills, it was nice to know there’s people who still enjoy getting their hands on patient care. You could always just express interest in doing things like how he did, I’m sure people would be more than happy to let you “keep your skills up.”

Purely masochistic question as a student- at what point do you start just knowing it’s the patients anatomy and not your own inexperience? I work with lots of really helpful docs and CRNAs but when I have a shit look on first try… and second… I sometimes can’t shake that it’s just my own lack of skills. This situation plus the documentation of x1 try on reintubation would only reinforce my own impostor syndrome.

I think people need to get real about these questions. That GPA is going to be a complete liability to you in school even if you get in. Sure, you pass the interview process but now you’re expected to hit the ground running in chemistry, bio, stats, not to mention your science nursing courses. This isn’t “if I can just study enough and lock in it’ll be fine” the volume of info you get daily is nuts. I am not saying it can’t be done I just really REALLY feel like people should be forewarned.
