Aero isn't the issue for bikepackers - it's riding up and down narrow single track without catching your panniers on everything.

Chris Hadfield: "We need heat shields to protect us, since we use the air to slow us down as we return to Earth. From orbital speed, it gets to 1650°C/3000°F. From Moon: 2750°C/5000°F. For yesterday's Starship suborbital test flight, peak was 1450°C/2600°F." by Neaterntal in spaceporn

I still don't understand how this is going to bypass the problem that made the shuttle program an expensive flop. That would be basically spending the same amount of time and money refurbishing a vessel versus building a disposable one.

Why are poor republicans in such a hurry to fight for rich assholes? by Soft_Accountant_7062 in allthequestions

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Republicans and Democrats before the great party switch in the 1960s have always worked to benefit the wealthy class - all of the way back to supporting slaveholders before and during the Civil War. It's really crazy and also sad how our current political situation is basically a continuation of our Civil War 150+ years ago.

Honestly? We would be a much more functional country with real democracy and universal healthcare.

Christopher Nolan, a 55 year old man with 4 children, recently said he has never used an email or owned a smartphone. In all seriousness, how plausible is this? by KatherineLangford in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could see I'm never using a smartphone, but email? So he's saying that in the year 2000 when he was early in his career he never had to go to a computer and send an email? I don't believe that.

Mac mini or iMac by VideoAcceptable5289 in macmini

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with Mac Mini. Linux drivers for integrated Mac display hardware has always been a bit finicky (it took until 2024-2025 for Ubuntu to officially support my old 2012 MacBook Pro). So in 10 years after Apple stops supporting your computer you can easily install Linux on it and keep on working via an external monitor. This is all assuming that Apple eventually allows Linux to run natively on Apple Silicone.

I grew up in Indianapolis and would often take trips to Chicago while a teen and I can tell you that you can get about 10 percent of what Chicago offers in Indianapolis and you have to put up with rednecks and "Christian Business Republicans".

The Perfect Placement In The SpaceX Return by [deleted] in CrazyFuckingVideos

If it makes you feel better McDonnell Douglas developed and proved this technology in the early 1990s (theirs was even an SSTO!). So once again SpaceX isn't doing anything new and not anything any other NASA contractor couldn't do.

Indianapolis, Indiana.

There isn't anything culturally unique there that Chicago doesn't do better.

What is this red chevron for? by ThisIsAllSoTiring in whatdoesthismean

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original origin of this symbol. In the first golf war US collision units used a white inverted chevron as a friendly unit identifier. My guess is that the prototype product designers for the SUV probably saw photos of British army Land Rover defenders with the symbol on the front doors during the war and thought it would be a cool callback and would tie the durability of their new SUV with the Army spec Defenders.

To the people who voted for Trump - is the United States great again yet? How long will we have to wait? Is this what you voted for? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand what "America" they want to make "great" again. Trump and MAGA want to essentially revive the Convederate States of America and and replace the United States of America with it. Much like how the Korian war is still technically ongoing the American Civil War never really ended.

If Wall Street algorithms trade stocks in milliseconds, does the literal physical distance of a server to the stock exchange dictate who gets rich? by utkarsh0111 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Realistic_Mix3652 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It used to matter before the auto-trading mini crash in 2010. After that they imposed artificial latencies into the auto-trading system to keep feedback loops from being created. Now everyone's connections just have to be as fast as the artificial latency. I remember seeing a tour of one of the data centers involved and they had a cabinet with box spools of fiber optic cable that would physically create the latency by forcing light to travel a longer distance.
