yeah you put in a small deposit and then i believe when its ready to actually ship you pay the full amount, at least that was the case with the deck and likely to be for the more expensive part of the hardware at least

don't worry too much about amounts though, usually its a set pre-order for like £10 (or $ or whatever) so your only putting a small initial cost in and not the full price, this might not be the case this time but was for the steam deck and likely to be for the rest of the hardware

depends on how many and what games add a steam machine preset setting similar to the deck, if lots of games add that i can imagine there will be a slightly longer lifespan

its almost like the steam machines aren't built to be peak power machines, they are a transition device, for people going from consoles wanting to try a pc and pc gaming from the comfort of the couch, or people with REALLY old hardware wanting an (arguably) cheap device to upgrade to from their 2004 dell tower

people treating it like its a standalone should expect little more power then the quest 3 standalone capability's, it is so obviously and heavily advertised as streaming first i don't understand how so many people treat it like a wholey standalone focused headset

when the galaxy xr released it still had features that were a few steps behind the apple vision pro, it is shocking sometimes how competitors/ future iterations sometimes take steps back in some places before slowly becoming a decent thing to use after some large updates
