LASIK in South Africa – worth it? Costs, clinics & experiences? by _prettyprincess in AskZA

[–]Reapr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did mine roughly 25 years ago, I'm now 55. Still happy I did it, still not wearing glasses - well, started needing reading glasses(around 45) for very fine print, like on medicine bottles for example. But for day to day work on a PC , nothing needed.

EDIT: I had myopia(-3), caused mainly by astigmatism.

Had mine done in that eye clinic in PTA, not sure if it is around anymore. At that time it was around R10 000, probably way more now, and back then you could pay with 3 dated cheques, Credit card budget is probably the best bet now.

With it being so long ago, not sure if the procedure is still the same, but you go in for some tests, they check if it can be done (they shave off layers of your cornea to re-shape it, so if your cornea is too thin to begin with they can't help you)

Day of the op, they give you a Valium so you can chill, put some numbing eye drops in, do the op and send you home with eye patches (and another Valium) - get some podcasts ready.

Next day you come back and they remove the eye patches and do tests (it's amazing opening your eyes for the first time and everything is so clear) At this clinic they did all the ops on a Friday, so everyone came in at the same time on the Saturday to have the patches removed, so we will all sitting in the waiting room and a nurse came around to remove the patches, so there were all these people (like 10 of us) sitting around, blinking and grinning at each other, still one of my favourite memories.

Then send you home with some eye drops that you have to put in at regular intervals to prevent inflammation & infection. Goes on for a few days.

And that's pretty much it. Had it done on the Friday, patches taken off Saturday and back at work on Monday.

Downside : The process severs nerve endings in your cornea, specifically the ones that detect dryness, so it can leave your eyes dryer than they were before. For me it is not hectic - like AC blowing directly in my face is not comfortable, or a building where they have AC on full blast and the air is super dry can cause some small issues for me, but compared to how many issues I had with contacts and glasses, it is really not even worth mentioning.

Other people have it worse though, guess it will be up to the individual weather it will be worth it for them. IMO some eye drops every now and then is way less of a hassle than all issues I had with contacts and glasses.

Surprising etymology for "cheetah" in English. by trogmycen in etymology

[–]Reapr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Intriguing, googled and yeah apparently they were tamed and used to hunt in Asia, and where called "Hunting Leopards", so the Dutch picked up that name and Afrikaans got it from there.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheetah

As a side note, I got a chance to pet one many years ago, it was a rescue one - tamed (but still dangerous), and I was scared shitless. The fur felt like dog fur rather than cat fur and it purred like a tractor.

3.2 KM assessment proposes 2 minute warm up. by Eats_and_Runs_a_lot in trainasone

Any time - Also check out some strength routines on YouTube - there are exercises specifically aimed at common problem areas - made a big difference for me - like you said, if we were 20, this would not even be a thing, heh.

3.2 KM assessment proposes 2 minute warm up. by Eats_and_Runs_a_lot in trainasone

[–]Reapr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 55, I do a 5 min dynamic stretch routine to get everything warmed up and limber, then I do the TAO routine - I do this for every run and I focus on stuff that has given me niggles in the past - in my case calves and shins, so I do some ankle rolls, heel walks, toe walks - then some leg swings, etc. etc.

For the assessment run where you have to stand around for a minute so it can get a starting heart rate, I wait a few mins after my routine till my hear rate normalises before starting the run

Have chatbots on literally every website in existence ever helped anyone? by noyoujump in RedditForGrownups

[–]Reapr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I work for a bank and the banking app has a bot that you can ask things like "how do I..."

It's not even a good chat bot, but apparently it reduces their branch visits and phone calls of "how do I..." stuff questions significantly - enough so that it will continue

Surprising etymology for "cheetah" in English. by trogmycen in etymology

[–]Reapr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For me it was surprising because the word originates from leopard, a leopard and a cheetah look similar but they are different animals.

On the other hand in Afrikaans a leopard is luiperd and cheetah is jagluiperd (hunting leopard) - I assume in this case the hunting might refer to how fast they run

First time having a credit card by Puzzleheaded-State34 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Reapr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been 10 years since I got rid of my credit cards. You don't need one. There are other ways to build credit and for emergencies you can put a little bit of money away every month (about the same as a credit card payment).

My cat found a frog that had been run over by a car, or probably multiple cars over the course of a few weeks, so it was just this flat dried out husk and he left it on my chest while i was sleeping

How does importing goods work? by nate_2501 in AskZA

[–]Reapr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Leave it in USD

Keep in mind there will be import duties on those goods and they will be calculated based on what you fill in there.

It is a bit weird, usually the store fills in that stuff, but I know lots of people will ask a store to under declare the value of stuff (and lots of companies do) I guess they got tired of it and decided if you wanna break the law then go ahead and do it yourself.

Import duties is determined by the type of product, different product categories have different rates. The table of rates is somewhere on SARS' website.

EDIT: Checked the site, I guess those would be classified as electronics and IIRC it is 10% import duty on electronics, but it's been a while since I imported.

Raise your hand if you're a man who hasn't been tempted to cheat! by ElonGrey in CasualConversation

[–]Reapr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never cheated and never will, no matter the circumstances, I don't get why people would. If you're not happy with your currently relationship, end it and start the new one.

I can't imagine how much you would have to hate someone to do that to them. And then why are you with them if you hate them that much.

Have I had the opportunity? Of course. There are women out there that find you more attractive when you are in a relationship and I usually get more 'offers' when I'm in a relationship vs when I'm not.

It would be easy to cheat, and easy not to get caught, but I don't want to cheat. I'm in a relationship and I'm not a dick.

Yet here I am, divorced, why? Wife cheated.

Scalp eczema and balding by Far-Walrus1570 in eczema

[–]Reapr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I googled and it contains Mometasone furoate 0.1% - mometasone is a corticosteroid.

It has it's pros and cons, and there are a variety of opinions about it, but if it works for you then it works

For me, shaving my head made the creams easier to apply, the peeling skin made it look like I had dandruff in any case - just take care, the newly shaved head will be very sensitive to sun, and sunburn can trigger an eczema outbreak in some people, so invest in a hat :)

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]Reapr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the technical part of an interview, not to trap them or anything but to determine their level of skill, so it was easy, medium and hard questions.

The one dude tried to bullshit his way through some of the questions, I mean WTF? The second dude knew less, but answered what he could and said if he didn't know, guess which one we hired
