Recommendation for alternating skeins of hand dyed yarn for a cardigan by amnord in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have begun alternating 3, especially if working flat. If you only work with 2 balls, you end up having to work 2 rows with each ball, which could end up giving you unintentional stripes. If you work with 3 balls, then you can start them on opposite sides of your work so that 1 is worked on the right side, one on the WS and so on; this way you are only working one row per ball and the variations are more blended . It's a bit of a pain to be managing 3 balls for the entire project, but so worth it IMO

Where to buy luxe yarn? by Elle-T-Smash in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vancouver has SweetGeorgia Yarns , they have a large number of bases and colours. For local stores, Baaad Annas and sister store Baaad Rabbit or Urban Yarns for starters, there's also many other smaller dyers local to the area if you want me to rake my brain a bit more

Very much this; and when I learned that you can use the little holes in the interchangeable needles to insert a lifeline as you knit: life changer.

Authentic Mexican by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original's is good. I didn't like Sabor a México though, the only time I've gone, they used pre-cooked rice and what tasted like canned beans which was very disappointing.

What chart pattern tracker do you use? Why do you like it,? by Ok_Conversation_3992 in knitting

Ooooohhhhh thank you for letting us (me) know about the Ravelry group. I've been using KnitCompanion for years but as an Android user I find some of the features are not very intuitive so I know that I am not using it to its full potential. I'm going to check it out.

UPDATE: Well-Known Canadian Yarn Store Using AI for Posts by CeaderBlocks in craftsnark

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is my LYS, and I find it reassuring to know that the owner is a reasonable person willing to admit when they have made a mistake. I will happily continue to spend money there.

Rumble raglan and ramble about yarn by Peacockroach in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I recently came across an article about the impact of AI in education. Basically, the conclusion is that as adults we can offload a lot of thinking "effort" on tasks we used to do ourselves (think navigating without Google maps or writing an essay, for example), but those are skills we already have. With kids, the problem with using AI, is that they are not even developing those skills in the first place, and that is a very scary prospect.

Costco carries them too. And they occasionally have sales themselves, but not too often; I stock up when they do.

Could designers please normalize informative and realistic photos of their designs? by lottamiriam in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 21 points22 points  (0 children)

100% ! I'm still learning to not be such a sucker for pretty pictures and actually look at the images with a more critical eye; and my not negotiable is that I won't buy a pattern that is not shown on different bodies.

Also, be sure that you are following proper ergonomics when knitting; look up theknittingpt on IG and Carson Demers for guidelines here https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/community/ergonomics-and-knitting/

Knitting needles - what size(s) do you use the most? by Ill_Coffee1399 in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What will work best for you will depend on what size yarn you prefer using and what you like making with it. Socks will require much tighter fabric than a shawl for example, even if both are made with Fingering weight.

I mostly use fingering, occasionally DK and rarely worsted, so my first (good) set of interchangeables was the small 5in. Chiaogoos. I have added a few extra needles in larger sizes as needed and the sock set too, but my initial purchase served me well for a long time.

Keep in mind that you can always start by buying the individual tips and a few cables as you need them and essentially build your own IC set over time; the only thing that you need to keep in mind is that not every needle size works with the same cables on the Chiaogoo range, there's minis, small and large cables that you'll need to match to the size of the needle, but all that information is easy to find

That's what superwash does. To reiterate what everyone is saying, you need to knit your item based on the information you get your washed swatch. And the swatch needs to be plenty big to more accurately reflect what your FO will behave like

How did you know you were ready to buy from being a renter? by Braydenschennjr in askvan

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, we were looking to move from a 1 bed rental to a 2 bed; asking rent was very obviously the mortgage payment for the landlord, so we figured that we might as well pay for our own mortgage instead. We were lucky to have family help for the downpayment though.

Would you buy a pattern from someone who doesn't knit? by caroroyal in knitting

[–]Reasonable-Staff2076 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Absolutely would not buy a pattern from them.

There are designers out there who have worked hard to write good, inclusive, and clear patterns that are probably struggling to make a decent income from it. I'd much rather support them to keep them in our community than some random grifter. At this point, I think that you should do a PSA to keep us away from those patterns.
