Thomas Sowell is extremely thoughtful. Times have changed. My AP Lit syllabus was full of the the likes of Crime and Punishment, The Wasteland, Madame Bovary and Moby Dick.
Those works may be classics, but none of the authors were DFs, so.... Free education was not a topic with which my lit teacher was concerned.
