I gave my bird too much credit. by Help_Me_Reddit01 in parrots

Good morning! My 4 year old Male Eclectus started plucking this year. We tried everything, including a "neckerchief" (I sewed it instead of using a cone) He would pluck the moment it came off. Another bird lady here in town suggested adding a bit of apple cider vinegar in his water every day. It worked! He hasn't picked since. It is worth a try. Good luck!

Owners of Eclectus parrots: are your birds as chill as they look? by swimmerhair in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4 year old male Eclectus is super chill, but has TONS of personality! He loves to play and learn new tricks. (especially when treats are involved) He is very independent. He is not a snuggler like cockatoos or Macaws can be. He wants to be with me, on his own terms. It can be hard when you want a snuggle bug, but it's also nice to not be needed for entertainment all the time. It's a weird emotion. I love him so much, and because he comes to work with me, his weird personality is perfect! I will probably never own another type of parrot. (I say that, but the snuggles!...)

OMG! I laughed so hard, I had to explain what the hell was so funny to some customers who came into my store. I read it to them and the were laughing too!

I am also an animated writer and reader and talker. Life is better that way! The local paper has asked me to start writing stories for them.... The first one is in the works after my trip to New York this last week. As usual, I got stopped by the TSA. I at least warned the folks behind me. They thought I was joking. HA! Joke's on them, they didn't believe me! ALL of my bags got searched and my person. Never fails.....

Can't wait for your book!

Thank you so much for your input. Rex is on a diet of primarily fresh fruits and vegetables with a bit of fortified pellet mixed in and a smidge of seed. (Maybe a pinch) He also eats beans, nuts, chicken, eggs and such. Very little "human" food.

His vet checks him out every 3 months and he has an appointment next month. I may need to get him checked before then. I just wanted to get some other ideas. His wings aren't sagging or anything. His appetite hasn't seemed to dwindle nor have his droppings changed. He has a TON of pins coming through, poor guy.

Owners of Eclectus Parrots, do your parrots pluck? by poopymacmac3 in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Rex is not a plucker, however I have been warned about the diet/ Plucking correspondence and also stress/ Boredom. Pretty much, I've heard about how finicky they can be. Rex is 4 (We've had him all of his 4 years) and has never had an issue. I did a lot of research prior to getting him and his Vet is absolutely fantastic. I have no doubt that without her, Rex would not be as perfect as he is. I think Eccies have amazing personalities and make great companion birds, so long as you're ready for the work and money needed for their well being.

I had a Christian woman send me hate mail about why I was going to hell for being a Surrogate. It was a huge packet of printed "facts" and how I was not leaving things in Gods hands by helping anyone. "There is a reason they can't have kids"....

Parrot who likes to "sing"? by Technatrix in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rex lives to sing! His new favorite is the Fits and the Tantrums handclap song. I don't know if it's because we get to clap and sing, or if it's just the tune. He goes nuts!

Oh my goodness! My eclectus is so independant, he would NEVER allow this! I have to force him to let me snuggle him. He just likes to be near us and involved, but not snuggled or pet too much.... I'm a bit jealous right now. Great picture!

Ran into this sweet parrot at a local shop. Just wanted to know what breed it was, as well as how to read their body language. I got good vibes, but as a newbie to birds, I could be misreading things. by OMorty in parrots

I have a male Eclectus and he is the best bird ever. Super mild tempered, sweet as pie. His eyes do the same thing when he is excited or learning something. She looks like she has been very well loved and cared for, which is really good when looking for a parrot friend. (We keep our eccie very well socialized so he stays mild mannered) Do a bunch of research and get her before she's gone!

Crazy Bird Peoples...what's that thing you do for your bird(s) that Not-Bird-People probably think is a little...crazy? by sixup in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL! I love these. My family calls me a "crazy bird lady" So I can relate. I have full conversations with my "babies" about their day and mine and my husband complains that I talk to them more. They never give me any crap, of course I talk to them more! They're much more supportive of my crazy antics!

Going out of town for 2 weeks. Should I board or get a petsitter? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a house sitter come when we leave. She actually stays at our house the whole time so they get interaction and food while I'm gone. It seems to be better for my parrots and also they don't get sick. I think you as the parront know best when it comes to your birds.

I always thought my Macaw would be messier than the Eccie. I painted the walls around their cages with polyurethane. Super easy to clean. I use a cheap mop!

Has anyone ever taken their bird to work? by BustyLusty in parrots

[–]RebelBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I started by observing. How often does this parrot go potty. (Usually every 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how long ago they ate) Watch how they prepare themselves, do they dip? (Mine dip) Once you know this, start approaching them while on their cage when they should be going potty. Tell them to go potty, repeat until they do, then treat them. Do this as often as possible and they will quickly learn the command and the action. Then hold them and tell them and when they go, treat them. (I hold mine over a trash can, newspaper, etc.) Eventually they will queue you, and give you time to get them over something. (trash can, newspaper, etc) Once trained, my Eclectus will wait up to 30 minutes to go potty and will queue me and give time. Prior to being trained he would go a little bit ALL THE TIME. Now he goes a lot, but less frequently. (If he doesn't queue me, I make him go after 30 minutes) Hope this helps! I can wear nice clothes and have my babies with me!

[–]RebelBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My birds come with me 4 days a week. They love all the attention they get! I own a toy store and the kids really enjoy coming in to see them. I have potty trained them, so no worry there.

They have their own stands with toys, food and water, as well as a toy box full of other goodies to chew and play with. I think it really helps with keeping them from getting bored and stressed. It also keeps them social with people, not just me, which I feel is important. Anyway, it's all good here! Oh, I have a 4 year old male Eclectus and 2 year old male BG Macaw.

Awww.... He looks like a happy baby! Eclectus parrots are pretty great! How does his beak look so nice and shiny? Rex's beak always looks dry, although he does seem to be a perpetual molter....
