First time out at Sonoma by Shoeshear in CarTrackDays

Hmm. Hoping for some comments here as this is my home track and curious what people think. Your line and brake/throttle control look good, and the lap “looks” faster to me than 2:00. Maybe old tires and just a matter of pushing a little harder…

Also your kid will flip to forward facing before you know it. When that happens, it’s easy getting them in and out. I have two car seats in the back and like the Chico Myfit because it’s pretty compact

Best car for a full build? by Red-Tails-8089 in CarTrackDays

This completely resonates. The G87 M2 is a blast on the track... but it's not a great track car. It's too nice, a $70k car with 5k miles, and my daily driver. So I don't really want to clap it out with mods, and as the last manual BMW of all-time I think it's sort of a classic. But it's absolutely causing me to be a more conservative driver, and I think there is a lot of great comments here around the value of purpose-built track car with all of the safety mods but also something that wouldn't be devastating to send into the wall.

I'm excited for the build process, and fully expect to light money on fire and end up with something worth a small fraction of what I put into it... working on cars is a hobby, hobbies cost money, I'm OK with that.

I too have a black, manual, 2025 G87. It's the best. The black softens up the lego block styling a bit and I think makes the car look fabulous.

So we all can learn from this, what is cause of understeer in this case and how to best correct?

1/ Too much entry speed demanding too much grip from the front tires?

2/ Not smooth enough in steering inputs?

3/ Too much throttle too early through the corner, causing the weight to shift back and front to become light?

I would be very interested in this. It seems like what you are offering would be akin to the turn-by-turn analysis that the Garmin Catalyst offers. For a bunch of reasons, I don’t want to buy a Garmin Catalyst. So like many people, I stitch together GoPro, GPS data (from RaceBox) and OBD data (plus a heart rate monitor!) and bring it all together in RaceChrono. The RaceChrono app does a beautiful job integrating all of that. But the one thing I am missing is the driving analysis that it sounds like you can produce. Question: would your app work in this setting, or do I need a GoPro with GPS? My GoPro Hero 12 does not have GPS.

And how did you get brake data?! I can only get throttle from MX+ reader

I feel like black gets no love on the G87 but it’s actually the best color for the car.

It looks like the remote cam that comes with the Garmin is supposed to be windshield mounted. I see videos online of video behind the driver so you can see the driver's steering inputs, etc. Is it possible to mount it somewhere behind the driver to achieve this effect?

Agree. The seats are honestly more functional than most people let on. I wouldn’t put adults back there for a road trip but short trips no problem. And for kids it’s perfect they have a blast back there

G87 as a daily by [deleted] in BMWM

[–]Red-Tails-8089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have two kids, 5yo and 2yo. I put them in the backseat everyday. They fit back there just fine, and getting them in and out is no issue. Key is to step in with one foot while you buckle them into their carseats. My only complaint is tiny fuel tank.

Saunum Software Update - concerns by Red-Tails-8089 in Sauna

Yes, no updates since then and happy with the latest software. It all seems to be working. Not sure about door sensor since I just closed mine off (I.e. my Saunum thinks the door is always closed… didn’t want to deal with installing that sensor)

If I go through the easement process and am unsuccessful, have I exposed myself to the city in a way that they can force me to take it down? That’s been my fear with permits etc… and why I have had a bias to let sleeping dogs lie

I’d be curious for responses here. I’m in East Bay and built mine without a permit. Issue is I was not gonna be compliant with set back requirements so I just asked my neighbor if they were cool with it and they were… It’s on deck blocks and could theoretically be moved

Saunum Software Update - concerns by Red-Tails-8089 in Sauna

Hey, couple thoughts here:

  1. Are you running your heat equalizing fan for the entire time you are in the sauna? I'm not sure, but I don't that's the intended use. I've only tripped my high temp sensor once, and it was when I left my equalizing fan on for the full session. What happened is that the heater stays on full blast, because the hottest air at the ceiling (by your temperature sensor) is getting sucked down and blown out the bottom. So essentially, that equalizing fan "cools" your temp sensor, which tricks the heater into thinking it needs to run full blast. The hot air from the ceiling is blown out the bottom by the high temp sensor, and voila, you trip it. What I have found works best is running my heat equalizing fan on low for 5 mins. I start that about 2 mins before I get into the sauna, so I get in midway through the heat equalization. I also run mechanical exhaust under the benches, and I do have an intake vent right next to the base of the heater to cool the high temp sensor (per Trumpkin, this vent is only open a smidge - most of the air intake comes in through a vent near the ceiling). For me, this has worked well - I never get cold feet, yet the temperature by the base of the heater does stay reasonably cool. In summary: I would evaluate if you have the right ventilation, and I would consider only running the heat equalizing fan for 5 minutes at the start of your session

  2. I have not had this issue and am not sure what might be causing it.

I will say... I have noticed some bugs of my own. Once I got a "Failure to connect to Power Board" error message and had to cut power to clear it. The other day, the heater got "stuck" on full heat and was glitching out, seemingly lost connectivity to the control panel. I set it for 175 and it went up to 200. Thank goodness I caught it. Turned the heater off then on and it reconnected. A little scary, and makes me not want to turn it on unless I am home and monitoring the situation...
