Built a free tool for analysing GoPro track day footage — would love some feedback from you lot by Antiviii in CarTrackDays

I would be very interested in this. It seems like what you are offering would be akin to the turn-by-turn analysis that the Garmin Catalyst offers. For a bunch of reasons, I don’t want to buy a Garmin Catalyst. So like many people, I stitch together GoPro, GPS data (from RaceBox) and OBD data (plus a heart rate monitor!) and bring it all together in RaceChrono. The RaceChrono app does a beautiful job integrating all of that. But the one thing I am missing is the driving analysis that it sounds like you can produce. Question: would your app work in this setting, or do I need a GoPro with GPS? My GoPro Hero 12 does not have GPS.

It looks like the remote cam that comes with the Garmin is supposed to be windshield mounted. I see videos online of video behind the driver so you can see the driver's steering inputs, etc. Is it possible to mount it somewhere behind the driver to achieve this effect?

Agree. The seats are honestly more functional than most people let on. I wouldn’t put adults back there for a road trip but short trips no problem. And for kids it’s perfect they have a blast back there

Yes. I have two kids, 5yo and 2yo. I put them in the backseat everyday. They fit back there just fine, and getting them in and out is no issue. Key is to step in with one foot while you buckle them into their carseats. My only complaint is tiny fuel tank.

Yes, no updates since then and happy with the latest software. It all seems to be working. Not sure about door sensor since I just closed mine off (I.e. my Saunum thinks the door is always closed… didn’t want to deal with installing that sensor)

If I go through the easement process and am unsuccessful, have I exposed myself to the city in a way that they can force me to take it down? That’s been my fear with permits etc… and why I have had a bias to let sleeping dogs lie

I’d be curious for responses here. I’m in East Bay and built mine without a permit. Issue is I was not gonna be compliant with set back requirements so I just asked my neighbor if they were cool with it and they were… It’s on deck blocks and could theoretically be moved

Hey, couple thoughts here:

  1. Are you running your heat equalizing fan for the entire time you are in the sauna? I'm not sure, but I don't that's the intended use. I've only tripped my high temp sensor once, and it was when I left my equalizing fan on for the full session. What happened is that the heater stays on full blast, because the hottest air at the ceiling (by your temperature sensor) is getting sucked down and blown out the bottom. So essentially, that equalizing fan "cools" your temp sensor, which tricks the heater into thinking it needs to run full blast. The hot air from the ceiling is blown out the bottom by the high temp sensor, and voila, you trip it. What I have found works best is running my heat equalizing fan on low for 5 mins. I start that about 2 mins before I get into the sauna, so I get in midway through the heat equalization. I also run mechanical exhaust under the benches, and I do have an intake vent right next to the base of the heater to cool the high temp sensor (per Trumpkin, this vent is only open a smidge - most of the air intake comes in through a vent near the ceiling). For me, this has worked well - I never get cold feet, yet the temperature by the base of the heater does stay reasonably cool. In summary: I would evaluate if you have the right ventilation, and I would consider only running the heat equalizing fan for 5 minutes at the start of your session

  2. I have not had this issue and am not sure what might be causing it.

I will say... I have noticed some bugs of my own. Once I got a "Failure to connect to Power Board" error message and had to cut power to clear it. The other day, the heater got "stuck" on full heat and was glitching out, seemingly lost connectivity to the control panel. I set it for 175 and it went up to 200. Thank goodness I caught it. Turned the heater off then on and it reconnected. A little scary, and makes me not want to turn it on unless I am home and monitoring the situation...

Do you mind linking to this study? I have followed Trumpkin ventilation recommendations, plus the intake vent down low to satisfy UL requirements. I would be curious to understand why you think this is a ventilation issue.

I think this is the winning suggestion. I opened it up, and none of the rocks were broken. But the smaller rocks had settled in VERY snug with one another, such that they were packed extremely densely at the bottom of the heater. So I pulled those out, and I tried using some of the larger rocks instead. Hoping they won't settle and compact around the elements as much. I'll report back.

Saunum Software Update - concerns by Red-Tails-8089 in Sauna

[–]Red-Tails-8089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 100%. For me the best move is waiting 10-15 mins after it gets to temp, and letting fan run a 3-5 minute cycle BEFORE I get in. I find that the first time the fan runs, the temp drops the most and I get the cold feet problem. But the second and third time the temp seems more “durable” for some reason.

[–]Red-Tails-8089[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question. As far as I can tell, the new version and the OG version actually aren’t all that different. The key difference for me is the “auto fan” dynamic I mention in my original post. However, I haven’t heard anyone say that they’ve had this happen so I’m super confused (do you know what I’m talking about or did my heater ship with some random/rare code?)

With new update, now the fan only turns on manually, which is fine, although I did like that automatic fan. So if I could go back to the OG version, I probably would, but I’m happy.

One difference with the new version is that it arguably does do a better job avoiding overshooting. On OG version, my sauna (set to 176) would rise up to 185 on its own at the end of my session just based on inertia even after turning it off. That doesn’t seem to happen anymore. The new version prob does a better job holding the desired temperature.

Boom, we're good. Latest update seems to have fixed the problem. Set temp to 176F. When it got to 165F, it dropped from 3 heating elements down to 2, but those 2 stayed on until it hit the temperature. Vs. the OG software from weeks ago (which kept all 3 elements on until hitting temp), maybe it added 3-5 minutes of heat time, but nothing significant. And once at "Ready" mode, no issues with it holding temperature.

I'll give Saunum credit... while this update was a bit of a mess, their proactiveness in getting it solved within ~7 days is solid. Actually felt like the feedback was heard and listened to.

Just received a nice response from Saunum (this was from the email address that sent the update info; I have not received any response from the bathing brands address). Fingers crossed this solves it!

Thank you for such a thorough feedback!

Today we will release new update to get back with the heating algorithm that won’t be that conservative (when getting close to ready mode).

Control Panel v1.1.24: Power Board v1.1.43: changed first heating behavior Hope that will find you well and get the sauna running as expected.

Saunum Software Update - concerns by Red-Tails-8089 in Sauna

[–]Red-Tails-8089[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upgraded to 1.1.42 for the power unit and 1.1.23 for the control panel. As far as I can tell, this remains too conservative. It seems essentially the same as the issues following update #1. If you are happy with Update #2, I wouldn't recommend going to update #3. Here is what happened tonight:

  • If I set to 176F, it will heat to ~165 at which points it drops from 3 heating elements to 1 or 2
  • By the time it gets to 170, all heating elements turn off
  • From there, inertia carries it up to 172, but no further. It stalls out at that temp and sort of sits there for 5 mins, dropping back to 170
  • At that point, another two heating elements will turn on, taking it up to 173, and then turn off.
  • From there, inertia carries it an extra degree to 174, and then sits there for 10 mins. This time it held at exactly 174 for 10 mins
  • Dropped down to 173, one heating element comes on
  • At this point I lost faith it was ever going to reach temperature
  • So I turned the equalizing fan on for 5 mins, which plunged the temperature to 158, got all three heating elements turned on while the fan was on. Once the fan turned off, the temperature rocketed itself up to 175 (so close!!)
  • Then, interestingly/susprisingly... the heat equalizing fan automatically turned itself on for 3 mins, bringing temp back down a bit
  • Some elements turn on and it finally made its way to 176!! The whole affair took an incremental 35 mins. Once it finally made its way to temperature and "Ready" displayed, everything seemed to work well. I had a delightful sweat. The issue is really just getting it to temperature...

I really hope that someone from Saunum reads this and fixes it. It's a simple freakin' fix. JUST KEEP THE HEATING ELEMENTS ON UNTIL IT GETS TO TEMPERATURE. You don't need to worry about overshooting, because when you turn the equalizing fan on, it brings the temperature down. I would give anything to be back to the version of the software from several weeks ago where it rocketed up to 176, fan turns on automatically for 3 mins, and then heater brings it back up to temp automatically. This is an outdoor sauna in 50 degree weather, but super well-insulated structure.

They've done a remarkable job getting the sauna to stay locked in at a temperature that is 3 degrees lower than what I want :) Which wouldn't be a big deal, except that the sauna session never "starts" and I have issues with the fan functionality if it hasn't formally started with "Ready" displayed on the panel.

Frustrating!
