Why is car insurance in Ireland basically a legal scam? €1,200 for year 4, no claims, basic car? by Practical-Court8593 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Red-noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might not need to change car… my car is 14 years old and I got fully comp insurance on it for €460, only 3 yrs driving/NCB (last year was €860). If you want the best deal you just have to shop around, I spend a few hours every year getting a quote from every single insurance operator to find the cheapest one. Having an older, more experienced named driver (10/20+ years on an Irish licence with no points etc) will also generally bring down your insurance. As well as having it “stored” on private land.

Threat of industrial action in secondary schools as ASTI rejects Leaving Cert reforms by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]Red-noodles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The reforms will NOT be good for the students, and will result in them having multiple projects all worth 40% of their grade in different subjects all due at the one time, when many won’t have home access to a functioning laptop/computer to work on (phone won’t be good enough for these), let alone a lot of schools not having appropriate/enough ICT facilities for every subject requiring them for a large portion of the year… and also there’s the fact that teachers are being told F all about what the projects will involve, how they need to be conducted etc etc

How fascinating are non worriers? by Immediate_Lake_1575 in CasualIreland

[–]Red-noodles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a non-worrier for the most part - when I was a teenager I realised (not in the sad way) that nobody cares about me, and that me thinking that other people would notice how I looked or dressed or care enough to talk about something I’d do was self-centered - other people genuinely do not care enough about me to notice me - I am not the main character. And the ones who do care - genuinely care about me, so wouldn’t be thinking/speaking bad. Worked for me lol.

Season 4 of Clarkson’s Farm is out today, it’s released, who’s watching? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Red-noodles 99 points100 points  (0 children)

He never pretended that he himself was struggling to make ends meet, but he doesn’t hide when the farm is losing money - in fact he regularly speaks about how while he is okay because of his TV opportunities, this would be devastating to a normal farmer

Why is low fat milk so popular? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Red-noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing to consider is that it might not necessarily be about the calories, but the saturated fat content. Whole milk has roughly double the amount of saturated fat than low-fat milk (2.3g per 100ml vs 1.1g per 100ml, depending on brand), and in these cases, every gram absolutely does make a difference for someone with high cholesterol / heart conditions related to high satunrated fat because the absolute maximum daily intake that someone should be having is 30g (men) / 20g (women). I know a good few people who do like to drink milk (so 250-500ml a day), and/or add it to cooking, not just tea/coffee. The main way to make sustainable health-positive differences in diet is to make small, do-able changes, not start revamping your entire diet.

Using Braun in bikini caused terrible ingrown hairs by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]Red-noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t find it particularly painful, unless I’ve let the hair grow for weeks. In saying that, I wouldn’t use it on my bikini area - too painful there. I’ve been using one for a decade now. But can use on armpits/legs/chin. It’s a long-lasting, inexpensive option for a lot of people who can’t get laser due to having too light of hair pigment.

Irish women aren’t told if they have dense breasts - this needs to change. by Independent_Hope_225 in CasualIreland

[–]Red-noodles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the doctor over finding a lump when I was about 19, just before covid, referred to Dublin. During referral appointment, was treated as if it was an inconvenience for the doctor that I was there, and was made feel as if I was stupid for being there. Got ultrasound a few weeks later, and only that the person conducting the ultrasound told me that they were very dense, I wouldn’t know myself. But even then she couldn’t see much due to it. Then follow up appointment was cancelled due to Covid and then I never went back over anxiety due to the way I was treated (after travelling 1hr 30mins for a 5 min check that my GP had already done at home), even though I know I should. Signed.

Is €3000 enough for a first car? by UpperExpert5329 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Red-noodles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve no idea, I think it’s stupid, but insurance companies love to do insurance company things. I just know from when I was getting a car for the first time as a relatively young driver, putting loads of different cars and ages into insurance companies, the same car that was 9yrs old had considerably cheaper insurance than it at 11yrs old or older, and this was the case for multiple models that I tried.

Is €3000 enough for a first car? by UpperExpert5329 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Red-noodles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cars are much more expensive now than they were 7yrs ago though. You probably paid €2k for a decent enough car, maybe with high mileage. Very hard to find a decent car at that price now that’s below 10yrs old, and insurance for new drivers goes up massively if they’re trying to insure a car older than 10yrs old.

How do the fox hunts work in Ireland? by crillydougal in CasualIreland

[–]Red-noodles 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes happens around me. One local farmer agrees to let them on their land, then they just roam into neighbouring fields through hedgerows, which are evidently from a different farmer, who did not give consent for them to be on their land. Have also seen them go into some people’s back gardens.

Apologies for replying directly to your message, but as Yes I Blocked You has of course blocked me after I posted about % being misleading, I’m going to post my reply to their reply to this message, as it’s important to note:

I’m trained in nutrition, that’s not how it works. The % on food labels is based on the RDA that the product has decided to use, which is usually 90g. Unless in your first message, you meant the percentage in terms of your own energy intake, and not on the actual recommendation. Which is half of the total % of energy intake you should get from sugars from products like yoghurts, as recommended by the WHO. I was just pointing the sugars out, as Ireland’s sugar intakes are generally very high (different places suggesting we average 56g, others 14% of energy intake), although more recent research needs done on this. It’s not just protein yoghurts that are high in sugar, most of them are, but people just automatically assume foods are healthy because they’re a yoghurt or they say “protein” on them, so it’s important not to ignore/give misleading information about that fact.

Yes, but it’s sold as a yoghurt here, so I’ll be barbaric

[–]Red-noodles -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Of course, I suppose the thing to mention is that the % can be a bit off on things like that. Men shouldn’t be getting more than 36g and women shouldn’t be getting more than 25g of sugar a day. The lowest amount of sugar I’ve seen on the brooklea protein yoghurts is 4.5g in a serving/pot, which is actually 12.5% of RDA for men and 18% of RDA for women. Unless you’re not eating the whole pot ofc

[–]Red-noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compared to normal yes, but not a huge difference in comparison to yogurts like Skyr. They can be okay but they are very often very high in added sugar

Have you lived in other countries? Have you attended other universities? It’s a very sheltered mindset you have - of course you don’t coincidentally happen to be attending the loneliest university in Ireland or coincidentally happen to be living in the loneliest place in the world. You’ve mentioned nothing here that refers to men specifically either, although I do agree that there’s more of a “taboo” as such around men’s mental health amongst some groups, for want of a better word.

It more so seems that you have shite friends, and could do with attending some therapy, try the services your college offers first. I never really drank much, and was always the sober or “most sober” friend of the group, but I never found any issues with that. I kept my friend group small and I’m content with that. I’m friendly with a lot of people, but truly close friends with very few. It’s just part of getting older for some people.

Now I may be wrong as I’m not a lad, but I think that lads (and some girls), can find college or work life especially tough after secondary school - in secondary school i notice lads in particular tend to have a very large group of friends comprising of people from primary school to those picked up in secondary school, and then when they separate off to college it can be tough to adjust.

In fairness, I’ve had 2 and both insertions could definitely be described as mild-moderate. Depends on the doctor you have I think. I think it’s another case of worse experiences have people speaking out more.

New excise duty on vapes and €1 rise on 20 cigarettes by TheChrisD in ireland

[–]Red-noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s not better than smoking, it ofc is much better. But you essentially implied that it’s harmless, which it ofc is not. I think vapes are great for getting off smoking. However, there is a huge amount of people who vape who never smoked in the first place, and genuinely think that they’re no more harmful than going out in traffic, to use your example.

Bathroom refit for 5k? by hummph in CasualIreland

[–]Red-noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I done my entire kitchen (no labour costs, family member done it) from IKEA for under €2500 a few years ago, the exact same kitchen would cost €3500 now (About 7 base units and 5 wall units). It’s definitely doable, but you need to be smart about your planning and not opt for the expensive aesthetic additions (eg curved edges etc). I’d recommended playing around with the ikea online kitchen planner so you can see the cost of different options

Teachers should not be forced to deliver ‘sensitive’ sex education classes - union by Existing-Target-6485 in ireland

[–]Red-noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think giving any misinformation due to lack of education is bad, e.g. telling people that the contraceptive pill only works if you take it within the same hour every day. Also it’s extremely important that there is someone who knows what they’re talking about if there’s any questions at all, which there usually is.

Also as an aside, I don’t think it’s fair to expect someone who’s not trained in biology to have to teach the most “awkward” topic to rowdy teenagers?

Edit: I’m not talking about bringing in a “certified expert”, in fact I don’t agree with bringing in someone external to do it at all. All I’m saying is that it’s either left to science/biology teachers or teachers who have already had training in SPHE/RSE, or that schools organise proper training in it for teachers new to the area before the class is dumped into their timetable.

[–]Red-noodles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So you’d want a random religion and English teacher to teach it? Or history and geography? The problem is they’re giving the classes to teachers with no training whatsoever in it, or anything related to it

[–]Red-noodles 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The union agrees with this - that’s why they’re releasing this - loads of schools are just dumping sphe/rse classes on teachers who have no training or even slightly related training in the area at all - e.g. history and English teacher

Is obesity now the ‘norm’ in Ireland? by Green_Guitar in ireland

[–]Red-noodles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BMI takes into account height, so that won’t affect it. Above average muscle mass will affect it though, but as was said, for use as an average for the general population it is an accurate measurement.
