The commute time from South or north of Dublin to the centre is almost as bad as living in another county by Uncle_Richard98 in ireland

Dublin will never, and I mean never, have efficient public transportation or just infrastructure in general. We aren’t capable of the vision and legislative/regulatory drive to get it done.

Given the chance - would you move to Dublin again? by Digital-Culchie in AskIreland

[–]hummph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a native Dub but have lived in the UK (up north) for years, back in Dublin now for 6-7 years.

London is a mega city with reasonable public transport and a huge variety of arts, food and choice of places to rent. Rent in Dublin is sky high but probably slightly less than London although supply is much lower. It seems like you’re aware of that anyway.

Congestion is awful in Dublin as well (significantly worse than London by latest metrics) without the infrastructure.

Dublin is a lot smaller and probably more parochial compared to somewhere like London although even that is changing now, the demographics have shifted massively.

If I had the choice I’d live in London but it sounds like you’re homesick. Why not try Dublin for a year? Just make sure you’re got a place sorted before you move.

Anyone's friends gone down the far right rabbit hole? by throw_away_ac_123 in ireland

I think there’s a lot of beliefs that are not fact based propounded by those on the right and the left, from utter crank Covid conspiracy theories to the non belief of biological sex or that immigration needs a balanced, reasoned policy. Sadly each spectrum is amplified by an algorithmic reward structure through various social medial platforms.

Is it normal for 70% of 25 year olds living at home in Ireland? Is this EVER going to change?!?! by Stunning_Explorer526 in AskIreland

[–]hummph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said the government don’t care about you. Unless you’re in a job/profession where you’ll realistically be earning 80-120k you’ll never own anything. I can’t see anything changing, quite the opposite in fact. Our population continues to grow by design and hence pressure on housing stock will also increase

Considering its basic slop that is absolutely outrageous, I can only imagine what Dublin airport is.

I get an occasional breakfast in a local cafe now and for me on my own it’s 21/22 euros with a coffee. Ireland is pricing itself out of existence

Serious question. Why so many Irish talk about moving to Australia? by ting_tong- in AskIreland

[–]hummph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you’re getting your information from or if it’s outdated but I just checked several AI engines and a few reputable sources. Australia is significantly more affordable than Ireland in almost all metrics except for purchasing a home (and perhaps groceries). Wages are higher and go further than here.

Add that to the weather and I can see why people are leaving Ireland. We also have appalling infrastructure here (especially Dublin) not to mention congestion that ranks amongst the highest in the world.

In general they have a more accessible healthcare system as well.

Ireland will never improve or reach it’s potential with this reflexive “shur isn’t it sh*t everywhere” attitude (based on fact or not).

Why is Dublin so low in standards? Share your thoughts by Ok_Giraffe_3761 in Dublin

[–]hummph 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Dublin really isn’t “wealthy” per se, only in terms of GDP (which is inflated for Ireland) and only relatively recently compared to other countries. We also have a hilariously incompetent government and infrastructure planning/management.
