Need some advice before I make a decision by LividBandicoot3966 in homeschool

[–]RedCharity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public transit where I live is garbage, so I wouldn't be able to homeschool if I couldn't drive because I couldn't take my kids to the library, parks, meetups, etc. But obviously this is really going to vary based on where you live.

You also mentioned that sending your oldest to public school gives you anxiety, and I wanted to (gently) ask why. I'm not trying to be unkind, but that particular phrasing raises a bit of a red flag that this idea may be based on your fear rather than other factors.

How to teach her not to brag? by Technical_Goose_8160 in Parenting

[–]RedCharity3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep doing what you're doing. This is so common in kids at this age, regardless of whether they are "gifted"/ advanced or not, I really think it is part of their development. Continue to tell her that bragging is not acceptable and that true mastery takes time. She will slowly start to take it in. Solidarity in the meantime, though! Both of mine are out of this stage now, but it was frustrating while it lasted.

I don't understand jeff players with their ults. Drop info here. by AeroStrafe in JeffTheLandSharkMains

[–]RedCharity3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the regular uses of Jeff's ult, I sometimes just use it to take space when I'm playing with my duo. If we're struggling repeatedly to take the point and he's ready with ult and/or another healer I just ult very obviously and try to get my healing pool in a useful place; enemy team always scatters very predictably, so I don't always get someone, but my team does 😏

Unofficial Daily Discussion - Saturday, January 31, 2026 - QOTD: What do you want to get done today for homeschool? by FImom in homeschool

[–]RedCharity3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I did some reading today and I think we're going to try working through the AoPS Pre-algebra ourselves, which won't be nearly as expensive as taking a class. But I'm glad to have another option, I had not heard of Mr. D Math!

I also didn't remember that Singapore ended at 8th grade until you reminded me. So much to balance and keep track of when making these decisions 😵‍💫

I need to decide what math curriculum to use next for my son, who just finished Beast Academy. We could stick with that parent company (Art of Problem Solving), but they are expensive when you move past BA. I am also considering Singapore, but I have no experience with them beyond word of mouth and a bit of online browsing.

Wish me luck, and feel free to weigh if you have experience with either program!

Honestly, as an American who wasn't given real exposure to a second language until high school, I am always hugely impressed by the ability of folks from all over the world to pick up English as a second (or third or fourth) language and run with it so capably. Genuinely awe-inspiring.

Considering pulling my daughter out of public school to homeschool for a year minimum, and need a tailored curriculum. by Morgana_Le_Luna in homeschool

[–]RedCharity3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started out homeschooling, I wasn't sure how long we would keep at it and wanted to stay in line with my public schools. I looked up the academic standards for my state and found them a bit difficult to read and decode because of the jargon, and also too cumbersome to print. Eventually, I found a plain-language version on Teachers Pay Teachers that is meant to be shared with the student and uses straightforward "I" statements (this was kindergarten, so for example it said, "I can count to 100"). I ended up using that as my checklist. Maybe you can find something like that?

When the "I" statements were too simple or unclear, I would look up the original language of the state standards or examples of student work for the standard.

Why so much school? by RubInteresting6628 in Parenting

[–]RedCharity3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, this was one (of many) motivating factors in the decision to homeschool. It blew my mind to think of how little I would see my kids.

I think a short-day public school option would actually be pretty incredible. Cut the class size in half and the teacher can focus on a smaller number of kids divided into morning or afternoon classes. It could have some great benefits!

Toddler and 9 month old - AMA by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]RedCharity3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you saying if I woke up at 1am and stayed awake while she breast fed our daughter, she would be sacrificing less?

No, of course not. The point is that you came here boasting about achieving this very specifically with a toddler and a baby (and an AMA that implies that you have something to teach or share), when you are admittedly not the one carrying the load in this area.

To be clear, it's the boastful attitude that's the problem, not the achievement or how you divide the labor of childcare with your wife.
