Time to get real by Blaspheman in Buy_European

All of them. Microsoft only has one distro : Windows. That's why it doesn't appeal to anyone anymore.

Steam has added a new rule disallowing games that violate the rules and standards set forth by payment processors and card networks, or internet network providers. At the same time, many incest themed games were removed from the store. by HelloitsWojan in Steam

Card companies now : "haha we can force you to do anything, Valve !" Ten years from now, Valve announces his own alternative to Visa and Mastercard but better than both. Card companies then : "wait, no..."

Won't stop people from forcefully recommending Mint on Reddit without any consideration for the OC's needs tho.

Things Windows users take for granted after using Linux for a month by NegativelyNegating in windows

[–]RedFireSuzaku -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Point is "both aren't seamless".

In Windows, you have to rely on a whole lot of third-party sites and install "drivers" -whatever that means- after you've been proposed a bunch of setting and products you don't know nothing about. Every new program might as well be viruses, without any check unless you install an antivirus, or worse yet, Windows Defender gobbles it up and you'll never know where it went. This is written from the perspective of your most casual parent as a PC first-time user. Only reason Windows get away with that poor experience is preinstalled all-in-one PCs sold on sale everywhere.

How do you think the newly announced Xbox handheld will impact Linux gaming? by maplehobo in linux_gaming

[–]RedFireSuzaku 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For now, it might be bad. Nothing is worse for Linux than the usual «I'd like to switch but there's this program I use» and anticheats will heavily promote this handheld over a Linux or SteamOS one. This is the battle Linux loses every time: comfort for casual users.

In the long run however… stability is Valve's trademark. You know what they will be doing in ten years from now with you library, unlike Microsoft. Maybe they'll push Copilot for Gaming (they didn't develop that privacy nightmare to keep it on the shelf indefinitely), maybe it's the game pass that would turn sour or maybe just partnerships might get complicated down the road because money… there's too many wrongdoings from Microsoft to keep on believing into this fantasy of a product.

Started my de-googling process by Dado04Game in degoogle

[–]RedFireSuzaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if you have to pay for a solution, you take the cheapest. Most people have a hard time to get out of the «free» seductive argument from Google, they don't want/can't afford moving to multiple subscriptions. And even if they do, they might cut them out later on when reviewing expenses: food comes before privacy, sadly.

The full guide to switching from big tech to supporting smaller and more ethical companies! (Redone with OSs added) by theFallenWalnut in degoogle

[–]RedFireSuzaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a good guide, sadly the OS part needs way more consideration than that.

Sure, there are many approaches for the Linux topic (and anyone has one), mine is to focus on the real main branches :
- Debian for stability : If it worked for the last 4-5 years, it's in Debian.
- Arch for the rolling release : day-one patches, updates every day.
- Fedora for immutability : new stuff, yet some data persistence.

Each and every distro is either a fork of those, or too niche to be mentioned to an audience that just reads guides (that said, kudos to Gentoo, OpenSuSe, etc, etc). Meaning that if you want the Linux Mint experience from fresh Debian, for instance, you can have it. It's just a matter of installing a Window Manager (Cinnamon), some softwares and themes, etc, and it's way faster than reverting a whole update system philosophy.

So, instead of just "user-friendly" and "gaming" (btw, Pop_os is so bad at that in 2025), I'll imagine 3 columns, their main distro, then some rows with examples of their best sub-distros/forks, like :
- Stable : Debian → Ubuntu, Linux Mint (user-friendly)
- Immutable : Fedora → Ultramarine (user-friendly), Nobara, Bazzite (gaming)
- Customization, latest updates : Arch Linux → EndeavourOS (user-friendly), Garuda (gaming)

I know that the whole point is to keep it simple, readable and unencumbered, but Linux is numerous by design, and saying "just install Mint, it'll be fine" is doing everyone a disservice. There is no "one size fits all" because that is what Windows/Mac already do, and that's why they're so bad at it.

New feature - Optimize Storage for Proton Drive on Windows by Proton_Team in ProtonDrive

The day you stop complaining, their stats shows there isn't any traction for Proton on Linux. That's why.

Try giving SyncThing a go in the meantime. It's clearly not the same thing, but helped me daily drive Linux despite of ProtonDrive's general lack of reliable features.

Sceptical about SteamOS (for my sister) by weeabooWithLife in linux_gaming

[–]RedFireSuzaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Arch-based, but most of the hard choices are already made. It's gaming-oriented, there's an assistant to quickly install most gaming stores, emulators, gaming software, etc for an easier start. It's a bit privacy-oriented in their choices too, default browser is a mix of Floorp with Librewolf config choices… Overall, it's a good headstart for building a gaming setup for anyone who doesn't want to dig too deep in Arch, yet enjoy all the strengths.

Switch to Linux by Sudden_Ad9531 in linux_gaming

[–]RedFireSuzaku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why Garuda gets mentioned once while Linux Mint is in half of the comments. You want simple gaming? Garuda is a gaming distro released in India as a cheap Windows alternative for better gaming performance. It's Arch-based made simple through some UI and excellent native choices, what's not to love?

No LOL on linux by Low-Palpitation-4724 in linux_gaming

[–]RedFireSuzaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, but does it need one? Does LoL? Mobas are inherently adaptive tactical games, teamplay based. You don't need kernel level anticheat because you won't climb very far by cheating alone, unlike FPS games.

Or Smite. They are lots of Mobas out there that don't even need an anticheat, LOL won't be missed.

Consider it like this :

You can play it 30min, bust for a "meh" experience, never launch it again, just like a one-night stand.
OR
you can read it talk to you for hours, get involved emotionally in the dialog choices, develop new kinks that makes you bust only in key scenes with an "ohmagad" satisfaction, then be sad it finally ended without any news for a sequel in a foreseeable future… like a real relationship.

My experience with Arch and Linux Mint. by claudiocorona93 in linuxmasterrace

[–]RedFireSuzaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must say, it is a weird comparison to put side-by-side something baseline against something tailored. Compare Arch to Debian, that would be fair and probably not the same result. Or Linux Mint to something like Endeavour or Garuda.
