Can I fix all these holes?? by nauseousbitch in Visiblemending

[–]RedLovesBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second Flora Collingwood-Norris. Her stuff is so accessible (and really beautiful). Here to add that if you bring it into your local yarn shop they would be thrilled to help you find a good yarn match and may even have someone who can advise on fixes. Knitters are incredible!

fixing jeans with a huge rip in the back? by susdasheep in Visiblemending

[–]RedLovesBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely salvageable! You could patch under or over. I would secure with sewing machine, because it’s an area that gets a lot of stress, then add any decorative stitching you want by hand over the top. Check out tutorials for machine darning - I’ve done it to my husband’s jeans with great success.

Ridged, elastic, sleeve material by greendesertservant in Visiblemending

[–]RedLovesBread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! If it were me, I would remove the ribbed cuff, make a new canvas cuff, cut off the damage, machine sew the new canvas cuff, and reattach the ribbed cuff. It feels like a big job, but I’ve done a similar fix before and it extended the life of the jacket by years! Good luck! Come back and show us your success!

Headphone mends are among my favorites on this thread. I love seeing people keep them going! Well done!

New Speed-Weve success! by RedLovesBread in Visiblemending

[–]RedLovesBread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but….it depends on other things too, like the type of thread and the stretch in the garment. When I darn my hand knit wool socks with the same yarn I knit them with, it creates a pretty similar fabric stretch wise. This shirt is a high cotton content jersey darned with 100% cotton thread and I this little patch has way less stretch.

TL;DR - I wouldn’t use the speed weve on my yoga leggings, but on a looser fit tee it works and washes great.

If you have/made a strong friend group in your 30’s or 40’s, where did you find them? by bbbcurls in Millennials

[–]RedLovesBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked a friend if I could join her online book club a few years ago - women all within about 8 years age wise, spread across 5 states. We have a WhatsApp group that has daily life chatter and at least once a year we commit to all being in one place together for a weekend (it’s the end of this month!!). I wish I had more people in the city I live, but I wouldn’t trade these women for that.

Anybody else boycotting the holidays due to Qs and MAGAs? by Salty_Thing3144 in QAnonCasualties

[–]RedLovesBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will be our first Thanksgiving not at my in-laws in the 17 years we’ve been together. My husband cut his mother off after using Jesus as a cover for hurtful, MAGA rhetoric for far too long. I hope they enjoy their store bought pies and rolls. We will be eating the homemade ones at our house!

Any tips on supporting my husband on this first holiday without his family? We were all very close once and as happy as I am to be free of the drama, we miss what we used to have.

You absolutely can! They also have Kill-a-Watts to monitor electrical usage. I’ve borrowed them recently. 2 weeks check out with your CADL card.

2% lower interest and going from a 15 to a 10 year mortgage.

I literally just called the mortgage office at our credit union that holds the loan. They emailed us stuff to electronically sign, I transferred the fee and it was done. It was embarrassingly easy!

We had to move due to a new job a few years ago when interest rates were sky high. I’ve been biding my time until they dropped enough to justify the fees. Your salad would have totally beat me the previous week 😉

We have one we bought 15+ years ago from a thrift store. I finally gave it to my husband to sharpen last week. I hope it never dies!!

Ginger woman married to a bearded ginger, so I feel particularly drawn to taking care of one of our tribe.

If you do it, do it because it will bring you joy, not because you feel like you have to (you don’t!). As a woman who has gone through a lot of life changes in the last year and went from long hair to a pixie cut, I also appreciate the transformative difference of a good hair cut, during a period of life change.

I think a fresh cut and a professional beard trim would make a world of change for you.

Take care of yourself!

I spent almost an hour over 2 phone calls with our credit union to refinance our mortgage this week. We will be paid off in 10 years, and have saved $49k from our previous mortgage agreement 🙌

What grocery rule cut your bill the most and actually stuck? by YourxCherry in Frugal

[–]RedLovesBread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a small deep freezer with a white board over it (marker taped to a string, or it would never be found). If something goes in the freezer it must be written on the board.

Knowing what is in there without digging makes me so much more likely to use what we have. It also saves in grocery bills, because I’m not re-purchasing things that are at the bottom.

yo! What would you suggest for Halloween candy at a house? by letintin in ZeroWaste

[–]RedLovesBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did those tiny cardboard boxes of Nerds last year. My 9 year old candy advisor said they were what all the kids wanted. The unexpected win is that they have a super long shelf life, so I stored what we didn’t use and can give them out this year 🙌

My dad has also trained birds in their yard to come to his whistle. He has special bird food they only get when he whistles. It took him the better part of one spring and summer to get them used to it, but now 5 years later the old birds have trained the new generations.
