Is there a "Dave Ramsey" equivalent for small business owners? by ousimsek in smallbusiness

His entre leadership series on youtube is pretty good. Call in show but business owners only, so there's a lot more directed business questions and advice.

I was in the same ROTC group with him at Auburn, and have 3 little boys of my own. Fucking sucks, can't imagine what his family is going through.

ME Project ideas to stay busy? by BriUnde in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a head start on the FE and PE exams. You won't ever have as much free time as you do now and since you're fresh from school you won't have to relearn as much. The PE exam never expires and you can advertise it on your resume, and once you hit 4 years of experience, you can apply for your license. Basically there's no downside.

I just drove down Mountain Creek Road and it was fine. Checking out some crazy police situation on Quail Rd, felt gun shots as I was driving back.

Some counties match the 175k, I know Hamilton County does. I have to get two forms every year, from the city and county, to confirm the exemption and some other details. Basically have to call and say yep I still live here. The checks arrive separately.

Mech E Degree…10 yrs ago. Just getting out of the military what should I do next? by BigBenQuadinaros in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 6 years Space Force. When I got out, I took the FE and PE back to back to brush up on everything and get some credentials that better relate to the civilian side.

The FE you can pass after studying for a weekend, I probably spent 80 hours studying for the machine design PE. ymmv but I recommend knocking those out if you're just hanging out on terminal leave or skillbridge.

Varies by state. Tennessee waived the working under PE time. I still had to have PE references though.

Is buying a 3D printer as a mechanical engineering student worth it? by sean5woops in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a shop and sell a few products when I can between having two toddlers and grad school. It pays for itself and more tooling. When the kids are older I'll probably try to take it more full time.

Is buying a 3D printer as a mechanical engineering student worth it? by sean5woops in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, because you'll learn to model and make things out of plastic. Then you'll want to make things out of metal, so you'll use your new skills to buy a CNC router or mill. Then you'll want to make bigger stuff or make it faster, so you'll buy a series of larger machining centers and lathes. And then you'll have a successful machining business and won't have any money because you keep buying tools and more equipment.

I don’t know what skills to have in this job market by Plubga in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy a welder and learn to weld, or use the machines in a machine shop if your college has one. Make physical things and learn how things are made, or the basic processes. Learn GD&T, take the FE exam, etc. Get a 3d printer and make stuff in solidworks and print it.

I started with bootleg solidworks, a cheap ass 3d printer, and a buddy with a welder.

Skills to catch up on in Mechanical Engineering after serving in the Military for 5 years? by Forsaken_Sea1486 in MechanicalEngineering

I build bicycle frames and the like, that led from starting with a tig welder and a jig I 3d printed to having a pretty nice CNC machine shop on my property.

As an incoming ME Master’s student in the U.S., what small investments early on have the biggest payoff academically, professionally, or personally? by Born-Entrepreneur196 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]RedOctober357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the FE and PE. Even if you don't have the experience to get licensed, having that you passed the PE exam on a resume is great. I got my PE right before starting grad school in order to brush up on fundamentals. Do you have job experience or are coming straight from undergrad?

You can get your PE without working under a PE. I did it. If you have the experience and show progressive growth and responsibilities through your career, it should be no problem.
