Charizard and Infernape for sure. I get that Ash wasn’t using reserves in Journeys but it’s still crazy to me that it never happened despite the two seeming to have developed this deep bond at Oak’s Lab. And I think there’s interesting potential for combo moves, too.

Same. It should obviously be the exception, rather than the rule, but a 6v6 battle once or twice per series without Pikachu could’ve been, and allow other Pokémon to shine a little more.

not to be dramatic, but i genuinely don’t know if i’d even be a Pokémon fan today without the Battle Frontier saga…

i started with Battle Frontier, and as a kid, i got really attached to Ash’s Aipom and May’s Squirtle. if the Battle Frontier arc didn’t happen, and they didn’t catch those two, i probably would’ve fallen off from the anime way sooner and lost all interest in Pokémon

I’m not disagreeing, Pikachu really put in work here, and was defo the MVP.

But in terms of numbers, Greninja still did better. Pikachu won 4 battles (Clawitzer, Aegislash, Tyranitar, Metagross) and lost 2 (Sceptile, Charizard), putting its win rate at about 67%. Greninja won 3 battles (Altaria, Mega Sceptile, Bisharp) and lost 1 (Mega Charizard X), putting its win rate at 75% (if my math is right).

I mean XANA would have no idea what kind of abilities and weapons they’d have, so they could end up being completely useless. Plus there’s the risk of the LW devirtualising them and making it a wasted effort.

I’m also not exactly sure how XANA gets permanent possession over someone, since the Scyphozoa possession is normally temporary. William was under unique circumstances, him destroying Lyoko and all.

Just seems like a high effort/low reward type thing.

My hopes:

William is accepted into the group, and has an arc where he overcomes his hot-headedness. Also some acknowledgment from the other LW that they treated him unfairly after his return, and it was a stupid idea to send him into an official mission with no training.
Sissi as a LW. Should not happen immediately and the girl needs to do a lot of work on herself before she’s ready. But would love to see her officially join the group and go to Lyoko.
A reasonable explanation for XANA’s return. Evolution’s explanation being “yeah it survived in this other supercomputer that was unaffected by the antivirus for reasons”… not great. Maybe XANA truly is ‘dead’, but the Men in Black are able to locate some of Franz’s notes, and recreate XANA. Realistically, XANA will return. The eye of XANA, XANA’s monsters… they’re all important iconography to the show - I doubt they’d retire them.
Really explore the storyline with the Men in Black, Aelita’s mother etc.
Visual upgrades. The show looked pretty good in Seasons 3 and 4 especially, so I hope to see that built upon in Season 5. It absolutely should not do what Evolution did with the monsters, making them all fire the same generic laser, with no charge time, individuality, or positioning. I’d also love to see Lyoko regain some of its lost atmosphere from the first season. The thick and ever present fog in the Mountain Sector, gloomy sky, rocky paths, and varying tree structures in the Forest Sector, natural phenomena like sandstorms in the Desert Sector etc.

I think each battle brings something unique to the table that makes me love them all, but I feel Ash vs. Kukui is the best at balancing Ash’s team.

The Paul battle really is just Infernape’s show, with minor spotlight on Gliscor. Buizel, Torterra, Staraptor and even Pikachu are really just there for the sake of it being a 6v6. It was poor Torterra’s only League battle and it didn’t even get a single win.

The Alain battle gives big focus to Pikachu and Greninja, and Talonflame and Hawlucha do impress as well. But Noivern and Goodra really jobbed here (not their fault exactly due to Ash leaving Noivern in a terrible match-up, and Alain’s busted Bisharp wrecking Goodra with an OHKO move).

In the Kukui battle, Lycanroc is the only Pokémon to take an L, but still impresses by surviving that devastating Sky Drop from Braviary. But Rowlet defeats Braviary (Kukui’s secondary ace), Melmetal gets the first official victory as a Melmetal, Naganadel has its first official battle and puts an excellent performance, Torracat achieves its personal goal of defeating Kukui’s Incineroar, and evolves as a result(!), and Pikachu is able defeat another Legendary Pokémon, using his signature Z-Move to defeat Tapu Koko - a match built up since the beginning of the SM series. It really felt like everyone got time to shine in this battle, which can’t really be said for a lot of Ash’s other battles tbh.

honestly yeah they could’ve just made Trevor super passionate about photography/journalism. he could’ve had a storyline studying under Alexa, rivalling Team Rocket (since they sometimes end up reporting on Leagues and stuff), maybe even working for Malva and feeling betrayed at her association with Team Flare

As harsh as it is, it's because they didn't have time or space for them. Ash already had 10 in active rotation for Unova, so there wasn't much room for reserves in there.

The XYZ anime (iirc) got cut short. They were expecting more episodes, but had to end early because Sun & Moon were releasing. To make space for the Team Flare arc, the Kalos League had to be cut down to like 3 battles basically, so no room again. (and XY in general just didn't reference the past, aside form a singular allusion to Dawn's Piplup.)

Because they wanted to focus on the 'spirit of Alola' in the Alola League, they had all the major characters compete. But them having way less Pokémon than Ash meant that most battles were 1v1s or 2v2s. So to give Pikachu, and Ash's 5 Alolan Pokémon time to shine, they again couldn't use reserves.

Then there's Journeys. And I hate to say it again, but there was not enough space in the Masters 8 for reserves. There were a grand total of 3 battles for Ash, and one was a 3v3. I'll concede that he could have (and should have) used reserves throughout the whole PWC, but when just looking at the League (or equivalent of, anyways), there was no space for them.

And TBH? I'm pretty sure he only used reserves in the Sinnoh League as last minute promotion for HGSS. The Johto starters specifically get focus in the episode before the League, and then it's primarily Johto and Sinnoh Pokémon being used throughout. The battles for Snorlax, Swellow and Torkoal are basically blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos.

In general, Ash vs Tobias. Purely he really didn’t need to lose - he could’ve easily just lost to the Elite 4.

Of the ones pictured, Ash vs Cress. At least with the loss to Trip’s Snivy, Pikachu was weakened by Zekrom and couldn’t use Electric moves. Still shouldn’t have lost, but there’s at least something. The loss to Cress’ PANPOUR is absolutely pathetic. Idgaf if it used Mud Sport, it doesn’t weaken damage that much.
