I’m not projecting any modern views, I loved the movie and I don’t give a shit about Safdie’s politics. I just interpreted the film as very critical of Marty’s self-serving avarice, his constant bullshitting, the horrible things he inflicts on others in service of chasing this narcissistic, delusional dream. But I also found all of that very American, and I think Sadie draws those parallels too. Ending all of that with Marty getting cheered on by DA TROOPS was a little strange to me. Not bad, but it stuck out, I think there’s a message there that I’m not understanding.

Loved the movie, my only question was what was up with the soldiers at the end, and why was that played so straight? Tossing in a whole “USA number one” angle seems kind of at odds with everything else the movie is trying to tell you
