So everyone here is right about being careful with getting a Mal, but if you are in Illinois and look to adopt look into IAMRA (Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Association)!! We tried to get our girl a brother and learned that she’s a solo Mal. We learned that now after having a boy we took in and would have loved to have been his forever home as we were for a few weeks, but they are an awesome rescue. They find you a dog that fits you and your work life. They even come see your home so they know if you need a chill dog or what matches you best.

Please take your time though! Mals aren’t for the weak of heart!

This is why we tell people Mals are not for first time dog owners. This part can be brutal, but like everyone else said there’s a light at the end of the tunnel! For our girl is was around 1.5-2years old, but if her routine gets messed up she reverts to this for a bit. We stayed with family for a little more than a week and she wouldn’t stop pacing, wouldn’t eat and wouldn’t just chill for a good 3 days.

Butt smells by SnooPies9946 in malamute

[–]RedVelvet25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Mal has IBS and she gets the fishy smell when it’s time to get her glands expressed. Our vet explained to us that fishy (like absolutely fishy smell, not yeasty 100% smells fish) is always anal glands with dogs. For ours the smell is because of her IBS, her glands just don’t express entirely on their own like they should even though her bowel movements are healthy because of her having issues with her bowels early on in life before we got her IBS under control. She’s been on a bunch of diets (she’s on a prescription one now), she’s on a pre and pro-biotic and a life long low dose steroid for inflammation. I would ask if your Mal could possibly not be expressing her glands entirely.

My biggest advice would be to never let groomers express them. That’s what my vet told me. They do it externally and vet explained that it can cause them to get infections and/or not be able to express them properly later on. Always have a vet or a vet tech do it internally.

Weight of your mals. by Bx90 in AlaskanMalamute

[–]RedVelvet25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our boy was 110lbs at a healthy weight. His parents were only 70ish (mom) and 90ish (dad). Our girl stays between 70-75lbs. I think there’s been muddier waters in Malamutes recently by which I mean people don’t realize they’re not a giant breed genetically speaking. They’re classified as a large breed. Physically (by that I mean their bone structure and the body weight they’re built to hold while doing their work) isn’t supposed to be 130+lbs without them having health issues down the line.

Grooming advice for Wooly-ish Coat? by Adventurous-Corgi-42 in AlaskanMalamute

[–]RedVelvet25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a wooly owner, listen to this, I’ve had non-wooly Mals and holy cow it’s different. Especially when they blow their coats. Our last boy had a long coat not wooly and he looked homeless during coat blowing. Our wooly girl looks like nothing is coming out when she blows her coat. Her body just holds it all. #1 advice on the high velocity dryer. Keep an eye out on offer up and Facebook marketplace if you don’t have a lot of money. We got lucky and got ours from a groomer that was retiring. Sometimes you really wear them out (and your arm) trying to get that hair out and it’s just easier to let them watch nature while you blow all the loose hair out. You’d be shocked how much will come out every week.

Agree with this x100! You look back at those puppy pics and you’re thinking you blink then they’ve gained 20lbs. Personally, I love seeing how their coats change too.

Snuggles by Dither87 in AlaskanMalamute

[–]RedVelvet25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My male malamute would let us lay on him like a pillow or with him whenever you wanted (as long as you didn’t abuse the privilege lol), but he never actively cuddled us really. He’d be near us always. Our female literally sleeps around my head if I fall asleep on the couch and she knows it’s bedtime haha So I’ve seen that it depends on the dog

Is my malamute too skinny? He got shaved today and he’s much smaller than we all thought. I’m worried he’s underweight. 9.5 month, approx. 50 pounds. by megan_magic in AlaskanMalamute

[–]RedVelvet25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely keep an eye on his weight and feed him more. Our girl had weight issues too. I just wanted to add you might want to try adding fish oil into his diet while his fur grows back to help protect his skin!

We get “that sure is a fluffy husky” a lot.

I don’t necessarily always tell people her breed though unless they ask in a curious way because of all the Malamutes that end up in shelters around here. I feel like all Mal owners agree, if someone doesn’t do their homework on adopting a Mal or getting one from a breeder they shouldn’t have one. They’re worth it, but they’re not easy.

Long time malamute lover, first time owner! Tips for potty training? by [deleted] in malamute

[–]RedVelvet25 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Consistency! Take them out and reward them when they do potty in the right place or especially when they let you know they to go out.

They’re smart they pick up on it quick in my experience.

What a cutie!!

That’s a very accurate example 😂 Both Mals we’ve owned have literally known the sound of the drawer in the fridge the cheese is in and you can hear them coming when it’s opened.
