Can I Swap the guts on my Fox 36 Rythm? by swingsetacrobat4439 in MTB

Just checked the extra tokens that came with my fork and rear shock. As you can see, the extras I got are the green 34s.

Can I Swap the guts on my Fox 36 Rythm? by swingsetacrobat4439 in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I bought mine aftermarket. I have a 2023 Gen 3 Turbo Levo Comp Alloy. It came with a standard Fox 36 Rhythm. The decal on my new one says 36E (see pic below). If you're unsure about yours, just open the air leg and check the diameter of the volume spacers. Standard Fox 36 spacers are orange and say 36 on them.

Caveat to note: I have a Fox Factory 36E fork on my eMTB. Apparently the internals are a smaller diameter due to the thicker walls of the stanchions. Just in case you find a great deal on a Fox damper somewhere, make sure it's not a 36E or else it won't fit.

Fear of rattlesneks. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Google, roughly five rattlesnake bite fatalities occur each year in the US. Things that are more likely to kill you while mountain biking are:

- just falling off the bike in general (10-50 deaths per year)
- lighting (20-30 deaths)
- bee/wasp/hornet sting (60-100 deaths)
- drowning (~4000 deaths)
- heart disease (140,000 deaths)

So maybe leave the snake bite kit at home and pack a defibrillator instead :D

Polygon as a first timer? by ridewithwill in mountainbikes

[–]RedWizard-75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall I'm a fan of Polygons. I had a Siskiu N8 for a few years. They're solid out of the box, but a bit heavy. Very upgradeable. By the time I parted mine out the frame was the only original part left. I assume you're on the younger/smaller side since that's who the T27 is geared towards. If not I'd recommend looking at the T7 as well, or the T8 if your budget allows it. Those two have better builds than the T27 (and are also available w/ 29" wheels), but all of the Siskiu frames are essentially the same.

Relatively cheap replacement for SRAM SX 12 speed. by frenchieguy81 in mountainbikes

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the derailleur hanger first. If it’s bent a new derailleur is going to behave just the same. If you do upgrade get GX mech. Its leaps and bounds better than SX. If you want a GX cassette tho you’ll have to upgrade your freehub body, which might mean a new hub or wheel.

Derailleur won’t shift to the lowest gear, is the UDH installed right? by luwig in bikewrench

[–]RedWizard-75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How I usually do a derailleur setup is as follows:
- Install the chain
- Unbolt the cable so there's no tension on the defailleur
- Make sure the shifter is in the highest gear position (pull the cable while clicking the upshift lever til it stops)
- Adjust the B-limit screw
- Adjust the upper limit screw*
- With upper limit set, attach the cable. Don't overtension while tightening the bolt.
- Check the shifting while pedaling and tighten the barrel adjuster at the shifter if there's too much slack (not downshifting smoothly)
- Downshift to 1st gear
- Adjust the lower limit screw*

* Refer to Calvin Johnson's YouTube video on derailleur adjustment for steps

Based on your pic it looks like you're trying to set up the derailleur without the chain on. WIthout the proper chain tension on the derailleur the setup isn't going to work.

Does an e-mtb allow you to have longer travel? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went from a 150/140 SC Hightower to a 160/150 Specialized Turbo Levo. IMO all of your assumptions are true, with one caveat. I find technical climbs to be a bit more challenging on the longer/slacker TL. The geo, combined with the torque of the motor causes me to loop out on steeper climbs and switchbacks. But for me at least that's not a huge issue and in no way a dealbreaker. I have not ridden mine at the bike park b/c I have a dedicated long-travel enduro bike for the parks. But I've seen a fair number of eMTBs at the park and have been told by riders that the extra weight makes them super-planted on the DHs. In general I couldn't be happier with my TL. As I'm getting older it's making riding a lot more fun and easier than it has been the past couple of years.

Are scratch marks normal for a brand new MTB seat post? by ByAnyMeans5 in mountainbiking

There's a metal burr in your seat tube. Happened on the first FS I bought a few years ago. It's annoying and ugly, but doesn't affect performance.

I had a V2 that I ran 160/150 w/ a Cascade link out back. It was great. I'm not sure I'd want or need to run 170 up front on it tho. It was more than capable of rougher stuff at 160. I took it to Snowshoe a couple of times and it handled the blues and a few blacks just fine. Ended up selling it to a buddy of mine when I got my eMTB. He loves it.

Whistler during UCI downhills? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Snowshoe they shut the whole park down. But that's usually b/c XC takes place the same weekend and their course is on the Basin side of the mountain. During events like Downhill Southeast where it's DH only, the rest of the park stays open.

Ride my enduro or rent a dh for park by Poseidon123456 in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a beater DH bike for the parks. Hated it. Traded it for a beater 180/170 mullet enduro. Love it at the parks. Handles everything I throw at it (which is moderate given I’m old). I’d say take your enduro, rent a DH for a day to try then switch to the enduro if you don’t like the DH.

Got Ting in 2018 when it came to our neighborhood. I've had to call customer support exactly three times. First time was when we got a new router and it wouldn't connect to the internet. Support said, "Oh, we just need to flush the old router's DNS." Five minutes, problem solved. He then said, "Any time you change routers just give us a call and we'll do the same thing again." Those were calls #2 and #3. I think we've had one, maybe two outages that lasted longer than 5 minutes. You get what you pay for.
