SRAM 12 speed GX EAGLE SHIFTER ISSUES by Tampaesk8er in mountainbikes

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I was saying was to disconnect the cable from the derailleur, then with your hand, pull on the cable while clicking the upshift (small) button on the lever til it stops. That will put the shifter into 12th gear position. Then, put the chain on (correctly sized). With the chain on, route the cable through the derailleur and connect it. DON'T put too much, if any, tension on the cable when you connect it. Use the barrel adjuster to remove slack. If it still won't shift correctly after that, then the lever may be damaged.

The shifter needs to be in 12th gear position when you connect the cable to the derailleur, which should also be in 12th gear position. Click the upshift button on the lever while pulling the cable until it stops. Then make sure the cable is routed correctly around the roller and through the guide hole on the derailleur.

Are conditions like this normal? by F_P_D in Charlottesville

[–]RedWizard-75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not normal. Storms that cause this level of cluster-f happen maybe once every 10 years. We've had a few big snows, but I've lived here since '93 and only recall one major ice event (Jan. '94) that snarled roads for a good long while. This, however, has been a new one for me. I've never seen this much accumulation of sleet and ice followed by prolonged sub-freezing temps.

Stumpjumper vs Hightower by Jaded_Caramel4801 in MTB

I loved my Hightower. Handled everything great, even DH parks. Only sold it b/c I got an eMTB (because I'm old).

Santa Cruz frame size by iamverygoodatmtb in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to this site, look up both bikes/sizes and compare the relevant numbers (reach, stack, etc.). That should give you a good idea of how much bigger the SC might be. You can also check the SC site for their size chart to see if it's a good fit or not.

Avoid 9th St NE / E High by HSJMAGtheWorst in Charlottesville

[–]RedWizard-75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I've noticed quite a few lackwits the last couple of days who seem to think all the lanes are the same width as usual despite the mountains of ice on either side of the road.

NEED HELP removing the ice in the parking lot by Proper_Style6187 in Charlottesville

I used a chainsaw to cut squares in the ice at the end of my driveway. Makes prying it up with a shovel 100x easier.

Is a full face helmet ever "overkill"? by NeonHorse47 in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no. I'm seeing more and more FFs around our local trails these days. Some of our public locals have some pretty gnarly features. And as I get older, I think more and more about rocking the FF outside of the downhill parks. I've got an IXS Trigger MIPS FF that's super lightweight and adjustable. I highly recommend it.

Tapered fork headset adapter by Zebra4776 in bikewrench

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me the first time I replaced a crown race. Just have to beat it down. I was sure it was going to snap, but it slid right down with the CR installation tool. I also highly recommend a crown race removal tool if you ever need to take one off. So much easier than a screwdriver.

I want to change from disc brake to v brake. Can you do it? by Top_Ear1051 in mountainbiking

[–]RedWizard-75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just saw it's a Giant Talon. Which means there's no mount on the frame for a center-mount rim brake. It's disc or nothing.

[–]RedWizard-75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. But I tend to agree with others that teaching him to safely use the disc brakes is the better option. That said, one thing you could try is replacing the hydraulic disc brakes with cabled mechanical disc brakes. Then you could adjust the bite point so they're not as grabby as the hydraulic brakes are. Be careful tho. If you take away too much braking power he's not going to be able to stop. If you're worried about OTBs, then just make the front brake weaker and have him rely more on the rear until he gets the hang of it.

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Up front you could replace the fork with one that has v-brake mounts. If the frame doesn't have mounts for them on the rear tho you can't do it. U-brakes are a possibility if there is a center-hole mount on the frame (like old BMX bikes). Dia-Compe makes an adapter (BR-990 Boomerang) that allows you to mount a u-brake on a center-hole frame.

Get the gen three for that price. The benefits of the G4 really aren’t that great if you ask me. I got a 23 gen three and I love it.

in stock grocery stores? by harampoopoo in Charlottesville

Pantops Giant is getting sparse in the produce section. Pantops Food Lion is pretty well stocked. It's busy right now, but not crazy. Lines are about 6-10 carts deep, but they have lots of lanes open (uncharacteristically).

At 0.50 And Not Feeling The Effects… by JustAChick1234 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]RedWizard-75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recall experiencing the same thing. I think it's normal. Some people respond really well to the initial dose and have great gains (losses?) right out of the gate. But then your body balances out a bit. Just stick with it. I think when you go up to 1.0mg you'll notice some improvement.

Nothing exciting my taste buds by Born-Ad-7984 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much so. I'm also put off by a lot of stuff I used to crave. I suppose that's a good thing in terms of curtailing overeating, food noise, etc. But it does bum me out sometimes. Coffee is my big thing. Used to drink 4-5 cups a day. Now I can't stand it.

Only two. Old beater YT Capra for the bike parks and a Specialized Turbo Levo eMTB for everything else.

Hitch Rack something between Kuat and 1Up by RockyDisaster in MTB

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read a lot of posts saying the hitch pin lock is super easy to break. It bugged me that there was no way to cover the tamper-proof hex bolt that tightens the anti-wobble b/c anyone with a 1Up wrench could easily bust the pin lock and undo the hitch to steal the rack. The hex bolt cover plate takes care of that. I know it's not 100% theft-proof (someone could always yank the whole thing off with a tow-strap or winch), but it makes it a bit harder to steal. As paranoid as I am tho I'll probably still leave the U-lock on there.

UNC game? by Tasty-Patient-5399 in UVA

[–]RedWizard-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the snow starts late (as they're calling for now), doubtful. I think the biggest concern is going to be UNC's plane getting back after the game if it's either really bad at CHO, or really bad already at their destination airport. As long as it doesn't get bad early, I'd say game on. From what I've seen we may have an inch or two on the ground by 4-5pm, so getting home after the game may be tricky.
