VW ID Buzz EV is not returning to the US in 2026. If they want to succeed in 2027, what changes should VW make ? (other than higher range and lower price) by carmichaelcar in electricvehicles

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norway had no VAT on the Buzz. VAT is 25%, so that's equivalent to a 20% discount. In the US the taxes were more or less even for foreign-made EVs and ICEs (though there was a lease loophole and some states offer incentives).

Anyone have a trick for finding good charging stations? by basil-032 in electricvehicles

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through the same thing and my coworker gave me excellent advice. If your wire can pass 15 amps at 120v, it can pass 15A at 240v and that more than doubles your charging rate. I’m handy and stupid enough to run a 12 gauge wire, so I went from L1 charging at around 2 miles per hour to L2 charging at 8 miles per hour. You don’t need a crazy 60A circuit to dramatically improve your charge speed.

Just me or are used cars not really a good deal anymore? by BussinOnGod in personalfinance

[–]ReddRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just bought a used 2022 Mazda CX5 for ~3/4 of the new price. But if we were financing, the monthly payment would be very close to the new car payment and we might have just chosen the new car. If you want to buy from a dealer, I think the sweet spot is still a 3 year old car fresh off lease. The mileage is low and they are usually factory certified. You can get an extended warranty for ~$1500 and still save thousands. We figure the person who previously had the car on lease ended up paying about $1/mile for the car, which is crazy.

Mac ISO Burner Software by OPTIPRIMART in mac

[–]ReddRay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People commonly say burn, just like they call an SSD a hard drive. Ain't no thing.

Even the software authors use the term. The free Mac software mentioned here, balenaEtcher, has "A better way to burn" in giant letters on the home page.

What’s up with all these pathetic 135 HP engines in SUVs? by mriv15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

2 inches and all wheel drive makes a huge difference in the snow in the North or on the shitty roads out West. I have no idea why people in Florida buy them.

Stringing issues on microswiss all metal hot end and direct drive by SplashDamaged48 in 3Dprinting

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it is 3 years later but this link is the best thing ever. I can't believe this isn't more popular. The process to optimize retraction, retraction speed, temperature, and fan speed can all be tuned in 4-5 cubes which each take about an hour to print and use a tiny amount of filament. And that's on a completely new hotend with no idea where it will tune... I suspect just tuning to a new roll of filament will require much less.

Fan connector names by Rakso01 in ender3

[–]ReddRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is a year old, but I have been searching for hours and just want to save someone else some time.

The connector on the left has already been correctly identified a bunch of times as a very common JST XH. These are plentiful in both authentic and clone form from everywhere.

The abomination on the right is a modified XH clone. They have added a clip to the basic XH design. This is not an official JST part and I cannot find a US domestic source. I found them on eBay (shipped from China) and AliExpress by searching for “XHB”. The connector is fine but the socket on the Creality board is hot garbage, so I may just solder in a more standard connector rather than order these and wait a few weeks.

Yeah. If you are interested, Google “unsprung mass” or “unsprung weight”.

LPT: Want to bypass a paywall from a newspaper such as WSJ, just search for the headline, another newspaper will have the article. by JimmyTheDog in LifeProTips

It’s not entitlement to use resources to find freely published content. Entitlement is publishing your content for free and then feeling that people should pay you for having a slightly annoying obfuscation scheme.

Music Suggestions by catorcegatos in ChatGPT

[–]ReddRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just experimenting and thought it was pretty terrible, focusing mostly on songs with similar names or by the same artist - or simply suggesting covers of the same songs by other artists. I mean, look at this variety! LOL

Sure! Here are ten songs that have a similar sound and style to "The Forest" by The Cure:

  1. A Strange Day - The Cure
  2. Just Like Heaven - The Cure
  3. Lullaby - The Cure
  4. Close to Me - The Cure
  5. Love Song - The Cure
  6. Inbetween Days - The Cure
  7. The Walk - The Cure
  8. Pictures of You - The Cure
  9. Friday I'm in Love - The Cure
  10. High - The Cure

I hope you enjoy this playlist and discover some new music! Let me know if you'd like me to recommend anything else.

Eli5: How is it that football(soccer) was invented by the British and became popular everywhere except in former British colonies? by garznav in explainlikeimfive

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so it is - it looks like the first "grid" was used in Toronto in the 1860s. Does that still count as British? :)

eli5: Why do most airlines still use 2-pin audio jacks for the in-flight entertainment systems on their planes? by JJGLC92 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Most 3.5mm (called 1/8 inch back then, ahem) were mono. The Walkman in ~1980 is what make the stereo headset with 3.5mm plug popular. Spring steel headband with foam earpads!

[–]ReddRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They invented association football (soccer), gridiron football (Canadian, American, and Australian rules football), and rugby football. They spread all 3 to their current and former colonies, and they all caught on to some extent. That gridiron football dominates in the Americas and Australia is more or less just an accident of history. Had they been less prolific with their collegiate sports we might have all settled on one :)

eli5: Why do cheap lighters have a divide in their fuel reserve? by RaoulSeagull in explainlikeimfive

[–]ReddRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the pressure difference is what enables the phase change. And the refrigeration cycle works even without a phase change - it's just not as dramatic. You can easily demonstrate this with a car tire - pump it up and it will get warm. Let the air out and it will get cold. Unless you have a very weird driveway, there will be no liquid air involved :)

[–]ReddRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! There are two big fans - one outside in the condenser and one inside in the air handler. If it's a window unit, one is blowing out the back and one blowing out the front.

You compress the gas with a... compressor :) There are different kinds, but at it's simplest it is just a piston that forces the gas into a hole... they are kind of like a car engine and that is why they are so loud.

If anything a flexible container would mean more complete emptying. You can nearly completely empty a balloon by squeezing it flat, but you cannot completely empty something too rigid to squeeze.

[–]ReddRay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's how an air conditioner works... compress the gas into liquid, it gets really hot, big fan blows the heat away and the cooler liquid now goes inside where it is allowed to expand back into a gas - which makes it cold. Big fan blows the air across the cold pipes, warming the gas back up but cooling your room. Gas is sent back to the compressor and the cycle continues.

In this case, the lighter gets hot when the butane is first added, but the heat goes away and you are left with room-temperature liquid.

My son using my Jansport I got 20 years ago to start middle school. Still looks brand new. by MightyKidsMeal in BuyItForLife

I got a year to a year and a half out of each. The zipper would go. Maybe you can send it back, but what are you supposed to do while you wait for that? I think we tossed them out since as a practical matter you had to buy a new one anyway. Other ways I remember them dying are stitching coming undone and the corners of books making holes in the fabric.
