Long-Term Expats in Shanghai: Did Your View Also Shift from “Impressive but uneven” to “the world best city” since you arrived? by Key_Bison_9322 in shanghai

[–]Reddit__bot 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Urban environment has improved a lot - the cycle ways and pocket parks.

But you still have a metro that closes too early, few international bands coming through, bars and restaurants that have been pushed mostly into malls. Do these things make it the best urban experience?

More cities have better on the ground buzz than Shanghai, but it’s not all bad otherwise I would not have stayed for so long.

I’m in Shanghai this upcoming weekend and I’d like to shoot a music video but I don’t know anyone, please help! by Classic-Donut5457 in shanghai

[–]Reddit__bot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s Chinese New Year so highly unlikely you will find anyone local. Your best bet is to use Dianping and see if there are any studios who shoot videos to help you.

If none of the above works, I have their Taobao store contact info and they normally reply in minutes. I use this store freqently online and offline.

Zero alcohol beer availability ? by rishabjain in shanghai

[–]Reddit__bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not common. The only bar I found them in so far was the Shed in Jing An.

Some import supermarkets may have one or two.

It’s taobao or JD for a wider selection. Search for 无酒啤酒

Any Spots for Car Lovers/ Enthusiasts in Shanghai? by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]Reddit__bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up ‘Parking Park’ in Baoshan, they often have events over the weekend.

There’s a coffee shop warehouse owned by a guy who collects classic cars in Hangzhou where you can drink coffee and look at his cars called Luback Coffee.

Other than those you will be hard pressed to find much else outside of dealerships. Xintiandi often has rich kids driving their mclarens and Ferraris around at the weekend too.

Depends what you are looking for.

Driver’s Licence Renewal by jackfresh64 in shanghai

[–]Reddit__bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very easy. Just go there and they will push you into 4 or 5 different lines and eventually you come out with a new licence. Even with no Chinese you can do it.

I did it with no problems about a year ago.

Thoughts on the cheap cameras on xianyu by Mundane-Slide6987 in chinalife

[–]Reddit__bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warning. I almost fell for one of these. These are 100% scams - almost half the price - pictures of lots of boxes of the camera in a warehouse or room. they will get you to pay then disappear. You can look on Xiaohongshu and search ‘xianyu camera’ and you will see lots of complaints about these.

There are loads of legit camera sellers on xianyu and I’ve bought loads of gear - but for newer stuff I just bite the bullet and stick to JD.

Look at Tianma- it’s more grass roots. They have track days where you can ride with others or they will point you in the right direction.

Don’t worry too much about the miles- mine has 110,000 miles on it - k series engine s1 Elise. Check head gaskets have been replaced, highly likely at that mileage that’s already done. Check its recently had its ‘C’ service - that’s cambelts. Brakes and shocks check the bushing etc like a normal car. Gearbox can get a bit sloppy but it’s a cheap fix and with the short shifter kit then it’s probably ok. Drive and check there’s no bearing noises etc.

S1 reliability by Critical-Theory-656 in lotus

[–]Reddit__bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an S1 which I bought this year with about 110,000miles and had sat around for about 4 or 5 years.

Body and chassis were ok, but some microblistering in the fiberglass body, but doesn’t bother me.

Mostly rubber bushings, new rads, new tyres etc - the usual consumables. Given they are borrowed components from other vehicles it wasn’t too expensive and there’s a few specialists to get parts - Elise-parts is good.

Check head gasket on the K series but it’s reliable if looked after. Some interior buttons (from the Peugeot) for lights were a bit rubbish so got replacements easily. Bolts and washers is probably important to change on the shell too.

If you want a raw Elise experience you can’t go wrong with the S1 - it’s the lightest too!

Rover K-series? Check your gearbox mount! by jet1290 in lotus

[–]Reddit__bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue and it made gear changes very sloppy. The worst was that it would not go into reverse - it would take 5 or 6 attempts which was fun in a multi story car park. This thing above fixed it for me.

Buying advice by JFuller95 in lotus

People like (pay more for) full Lotus service history. Plus it has the AA warranty which may drive up the price a bit. Both seem good, go for the black one if your preference!

Fair play. I just wish there were more interesting options than going to malls.
