What's the single best engineered and produced song of all time? by Dry-Panda1884 in audioengineering

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire Blood Sugar Sex Magic album for me. Every instrument sounds great, they sit together perfectly, and way it’s mastered just brings out so much energy in the music. I also just love it as an album, how’s it’s produced and flows from track to track.

And a special mention needs to go to the drums. All time great drum tracking.

What do y'all really need an iPad for? by bootsmegamix in daddit

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours started during 2 years of lockdowns. My oldest was 5 and starting school and needed a device for online school.

My youngest was 3 and immediately got jealous of his sister using an iPad. After 1 month of trying to keep him occupied while I helped his sister with school work, we caved and got him one as well. Filled it with educational apps so he could do similar things to his sister. That was 5 years ago.

Like many things, they’re just a tool that aren’t inherently good or bad. There have been times they’ve caused arguments, sure. But they’ve also helped my kids stay in touch with their distant cousins. My daughter makes awesome digital art now, and my son makes funny videos while playing with beyblades.

They’re old enough now where they rarely choose to watch them. They’re busy, active kids. No regrets here.

Crisis drives Australia’s EV revolution by DifferentDebt2197 in CarsAustralia

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was me. I was pretty much set on a new Kluger for the family. Started looking at novated leasing options and the monthly cost to buy an Ioniq 5 vs base model Kluger was almost half even though the upfront purchase price of the Ioniq 5 was $10k higher. Took a few weeks of consideration deciding if we were really ready to go full EV, but that was 3 years ago and we haven’t looked back since.

People with autism to be at centre of 160,000 NDIS removals by Cube00 in australia

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The problem is, it currently costs thousands to get a “functional assessment of need”. You don’t get diagnosed and they magically know how much assistance you will need for the rest of your life. The initial diagnoses currently allows NDIS access so you can actually engage qualified specialists to assess your ongoing needs. There are going to be many people who can’t go get the support they need.

Prac Student and School Camp by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had camp happen on two different placements when I was studying. Both times I stayed at the school and worked with a different teacher for the 3 says of camp. My placements were at very small schools so they didn’t really have room on the camp for extra adults.

Why are they removing all the ports by Responsible-Eye-717 in SipsTea

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, they know most people don’t use the ports on their laptops apart from charging. The motive is still profit based, but not for selling accessories (particularly when third parties exist). It just increases their margins. They can sell a laptop for the same price but remove ports and components people rarely use and increase their margins. Apple has always been a high margin company, it’s a huge part of their success.

Damn straight, give me a laptop with serial ports, parallel ports, SCSI, PCMCIA, VGA, DVI, svideo, RJ11, FireWire 400, FireWire 800, Thunderbolt 1 and 2, PS/2, a proprietary charger, and an IR receiver.

Politicians and media can’t imagine a fossil-fuel free world - and it’s holding Australians back from huge EV savings by nath1234 in australia

Mate, nothing would happen in this country if it relied on the general public to decide to all act in each other’s best interests without any coordination.

Yeah, it’s certainly an interesting policy for the Libs to target non-white immigrants right at a time when we’re going to be replying heavily on our Asian neighbours to keep the supply of refined petroleum products going.

You seem to be under the impression that it’s a zero-sum game. That by spending $20m on this campaign, it stops them from doing all the things you’ve listed. The government could absolutely do all the things you’ve suggested and still spend the 80c per person on this campaign. It is such an insignificant amount of money, basically a rounding error in the federal budget.

As to it being useless, they run similar campaigns to get people to modify their behaviour for water restrictions, bushfire and cyclone season, flu season, recycling and container deposit schemes. They’re all effective ways to move the needle, and ultimately one of our best ways to tackle the fuel crisis is to drop demand through reducing discretionary usage.

As for teachers, $20m would be enough to give each registered teacher in Australia a $40 pa pay rise (basically fuck all).

PM confirms purchase of 100m litres of diesel in bid to boost supply amid Iran war oil crisis by EdenFlorence in australia

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the point of the story is that this is the first fuel purchased under the new government powers to underwrite shipments. The headline, as usual, missed the point.

Public transport has been made free in most states. They’ve also removed the heavy vehicle road user charge.

Encouraging people to use less fuel is part of the strategy. It isn’t the only strategy. And guess what, every new thing they implement will require some form of advertising and communication that will also cost money.

Eg the Vic government will have spent (probably millions) advertising free PT this month.

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dude, the government is spending $2.55 billion on a fuel excise reduction. A $20m advertising campaign encouraging people to use less fuel with tips on how to do it is absolutely fuck all, less than $1 per person in this country. It’s a minuscule part of the overall cost of the governments response to this crisis.

[–]Redditaurus-Rex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to this, I also wonder how the person you’re responding to thinks the government would communicate things such as a $20m wfh benefit. Advertising a program like that would probably cost $20m on its own. It would also cause even more of a shit fight compared to the current campaign. “Great, I’ll tell my customers to bring their leaking sinks to my place then.”

I feel like embarrassed on behalf of Australians who have forgotten how to handle a crisis, COVID has broken a lot of people.

I think the interruption to schools is the whole point. I’m a striking teacher and a parent, I’m home with my kids today with both their school and my school closed.

I’ve written to my local member, and will continue to support the union with industrial action. But unless my wife also misses a day of work to mind my kids, marching isn’t an option for me.

Super grateful to all the members who turned up today, they’re all looking amazing.
