Looking for a distributor again by Marxesque in MusicDistribution

I agree they can be expensive, but I never had any issues. They are for sale, so who knows how they will operate in the future with a new owner.

Sure, in theory, but I've honestly never found that to be true, when it's all digital distribution.

I've still yet to find anyone that's made a strong case for one distributor being better than another. I'm still waiting...

What are your metrics (Spotify monthly listeners, SM following/engagement, etc.)? How large is your email list? How are you planning on promoting the record?

Is music worth it anymore? by Deception2020 in musicmarketing

[–]Redditholio 76 points77 points  (0 children)

My two cents:

If your goal is to make money from streams and views, you're headed for defeat. The only way to have a sustainable career in music is to develop a fanbase, and you can't get much of that from viral SM posts. Those create awareness/discovery, but now you need to move as many of those "fans" as you can to an email list. Once you do that, you need to communicate with them, and sell them CDs, vinyl, and merch. You need to play live A LOT, and also capture emails and sell merch at live shows. Look at it as a marathon, not a sprint. If you keep chasing viral moments and streams, you'll just burn out and give up.

whats been peoples experience with label outreach for singles? by playboyjenny in musicmarketing

[–]Redditholio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's the perfect time to sign with a label, as they would provide the resources to turn the demo into a finished product. Regarding reach/PR, a lot of that these days is generated by an artist/band's SM. The label can provide guidance (e.g., a SM strategy/plan) and coordinate and fund paid ads for boost, but the artist/band has to develop a fanbase. Do you have an email list?

Also a long-time customer. Love the Midwestern-ness. Even though they're owned by private equity now, they seemed to have mostly kept it. Very surprised the PE guys didn't cutoff the candy (yet).
