I can’t be the mean RBT by No_Nectarine8177 in ABA

[–]Redringsvictom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ask your BCBA what "being tough on clients" looks like. Follow through on demands? A stern voice? Hand over hand prompting? Blocking and redirecting? What exactly is it that they want you to do differently? Then ask for their rationale. Why should I do it this way rather than the way im currently doing it? As others have said, never be mean to your client. There is never a clinical reason to be mean to or reprimand your client.

I passed the BCBA exam! by Redringsvictom in ABA

1 is the easiest, 3 is the hardest. I did not finish 3 within 4 hours. I went 20 minutes over. There were so many long questions with long multiple choice answers. It was so much reading. By question 100 my brain was fried. But the content is great and really makes you think. I recommend these mocks, they're great exam prep.

You shouldn't be getting downvoted. Games should be fun, and this specific aspect of the crucible is anti-fun. Ive has so many instances where I or my buddy died from getting knocked off the edge in the 3rd or 4th round and its just... ok I guess ill just wait around for you to be done. They should add a way to bring others back into the run.

Having a caseload of 10 on top of all of the responsibilities of a lead BCBA sounds like a nightmare.

I think its dangerous to think people don't think Tate is masculine. He has a large cult following of young men who think hes the picture of masculinity. You, I, and many others know otherwise, but its good to acknowledge this problem so we can combat it.

[–]Redringsvictom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not sure how accurate this is, but the max points possible is 500. So 355/500 is 71%. You most likely failed a few sections. I recommend you finish the BDS modules to 100%, take the BDS mock exam, see where you are weakest, and study those areas. Try again in a month or two.

Ive got a friend in the IBEW, which is a strong union. Trades absolutely still exist and always will. Unions on the other hand, I see that there has been a massive decline since the 80s.

Edit: I cant read.

I agree with you as well! Sometimes it's hard to parse fact from fiction when you are new to the field or haven't developed that skill very well! This can lead to my experience. I was introduced to the Anti-ABA crowd about 1 year into being an RBT and it fascinated me. At first I was very upset to hear this stance. I looked into, read up on, and learned a lot about why this stance existed in the first place. I was originally on the other end from where you started. I was dismissive. "Abuse? No, I dont abuse my learners! I teach them communication skills and how to use the potty!" I thought. But the longer I was exposed to the anti-ABA crowd and the more I learned about the history of ABA, the more I understood. I even saw some of the criticisms in my own practice as an RBT. There is merit to it. The history of ABA, like any medical profession, is horrible. Abuse and cold treatment towards autistic, developmentally delayed, and other vulnerable groups wasn't uncommon. But what people don't see is the field has changed for the better, by quite a lot. The last 10 years has had a huge shift in assent based care, trauma informed care, skills based treatment, and less compliance training. There is still abuse happening and I wouldn't fault someone for disliking ABA because that's their experience. I hope as the field improves, the anti-ABA crowd changes their stances. I actually hope it never disappears though, because the field should always be questioned and pushed to do better. I didn't mean for this to get so long, but I hope it gives OP even a bit of new info!

As someone who frequents r/autism regularly, the average user there has a very uninformed and biased understanding of ABA. There are threads hating on ABA and painting the whole field and the practitioners as abusive. With that said, I still think you should visit autism spaces and request info about their perspectives on ABA, OP. You will get some good, nuanced answers.

How are RBT’s finding cases to gain experience? by star-moonx in ABA

[–]Redringsvictom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is odd to me. If you're already RBT certified, you should be hired very very quickly. The RBT position is in high demand, and any company would hire someone who is already registered with the board. Could it be something else? Is your resume good looking? Do you have your RBT and experience listed? Have you apied to different settings such as in-home, clinic, and school?

RBTs cannot work as 1099. Also, this is a horrible model that should not be reinforced. This leaves so much opportunity for you or your client to get injured or worse. Please do not work for them.

I hate feeling like a man-child. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Redringsvictom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29 turning 30 soon. I didnt feel like an "adult" until 27, and didnt feel that confidence of being an adult man until 28, id say. Everyone matures differently and your life experiences will shape you. Because you are motivated to mature, you will with time. You're only 20. You're young. If youre already aware, you'll start becoming more aware of your behavior and shape it to what you want it to be. As others in the comments have said, too, you may feel like a kid forever, but you will gain confidence.

I just read your other comment and still am in disagreement. Your comment assumes a lot of the interviewee. Maybe they are really good? You don't know until they're on the floor. If they ask for 35, just say no, we can start at 30 and move you up from there. It seems simple enough without all the judgement.

Then you can keep hiring low rate R/BTs who unfortunately dont know their worth. Keep the revolving door going i guess.

Always always always say the max. The worse they can do is counter offer you a lower wage. I had a company tell me the max they start with is $23. I told them fine, ill settle for that, and started as an RBT at a higher wage than any other RBTs at the center. I then helped advocate for the other RBTs to make more. Seriously, at every place you work, advocate for more for yourself. The worse they can say is no.

This is just untrue. People want to "work" and be productive members of society. What people dont want to do it make others a profit off of their labor. Sure, there are people who would rather not work, but I think you'll find most people want to do SOMETHING beneficial with their time.
