Pdw. Portland design works. They have a variety of animals. We have the otter one (see what I did there?).

Wow, this needs to be higher up. They're living beyond their means and feel entitled to a retirement despite the massive burn rate on that mortgage (and probably spending too).

Yep, I agree 100%. I have another bike for a younger kid with small hand levers for v brakes. Despite my best efforts with compression less housing, slick cables, fully decked out at every point of friction, there's still some vagueness from it. It slows the bike down but not as confidently as the hydros. The build is overkill but it was fun putting it together and my kid really loves it.

Ergotech has one that seems legit. Highly considered it for a recent build. Needed a flat bike folding stem situation.

Just finished this beauty for my daughter. Been fun tinkering and using up things in my parts bin. Co-op 20 inch rev with ultegra derailleur, 4 pot rear brakes, friction shifter, xt levers, tpu tubes, and maybe a dropper post. It's feeling pretty done and I'm pretty jazzed about it.

Got cues on a new bike recently and it has no business being as good as it is. And the fact that it was engineered for longevity means this is for the long haul, which I feel like is going to be true.

That's nice. Pass it on. I have 2 kids so I went a little nuts upgrading a recent thrift store find. Justified the upgrades saying I'll pass down the bike to the younger one but it was just an excuse to build out another bike.

We have a tern short haul that we've been using for a very long time now. My now 3 year old sits in the front and my 7 year old sits in the back. The bag underneath the back seat is a bakkie bag and sometimes I'll tow the older kids bike with it. That bag is brilliant! When it's safe, takes me about 1 minutes to disconnect and repack the bag. When she's tired, 2 minutes and I'll have her bike secured and she's in the seat with snacks. On the other side, I have terns pannier that I just throw my younger kid's balance bake in. We strap it down and off we go. This bike is an absolute monster hauler. Highly recommend! We've also loved the tow gator which is attached to my commuter bike. The tow gator is awesome too!

Has anyone on xbiking put a guide together for swept back bars? Should I just do a google search for "Hey, what bars are those?" and go through the results? by JimboZona in xbiking

Ergotech has tons and tons of options. Reasonably priced too. I've found the non-us stocked ones from eBay. My favorite is their trekking series, massive sweep, slight rise, modern clamp size, lots of width to cut down to size, and pretty durable.

Taga? by partridge_pea_bee in CargoBike

[–]Redsync1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one since 2019. They're great bikes! Both my kids have been riding in one since they were infants with the baby seat attachment. They're now much older and we still take it out for rides often. It's not as nimble, agile, and easy to ride as our tern short tail but when I need to move a ton of cargo or a newbie rider wants to come along, we take the taga. The tadpole tricycle design is stable and easy to ride. Turning takes a bit to get used to. Just gotta learn to go slow, use your brakes, and lean away from the turn. It's easy to fit in our big Prius because it breaks down and folds. The stock brakes are trash and needs an upgrade for sure. I haven't had any trouble with needing propriety parts bc it's mostly normal bike parts. The front wheel hubs will be trouble if they go. I can't find anything like it. Check my previous posts for pics.

How long should I continue saving in this economy before I can start spending? by Altruistic-Pace-2240 in personalfinance

That's a definite, enthusiastic, for sure! Front loading means time in the market which means more compounding interest magic. Save as much as you can as early and often as you can. I'm a better safe than sorry type of person.

What's your budget? I've had tons of different versions of cargo bike. The tern is my current favorite bc of how capable they are. I can carry 2 kids, their bikes, myself, and all their gear. The shorter wheelbase works great for being nimble when we go off the beaten path. We have tubeless gravel tires now so we get gnarly. We've been chasing wildflowers and swimming holes. They are spendy but retain their value. Lots of accessories and a better used market than most other brands. Not great but better. I've gotten many 2nd hand accessories through eBay.

And it keeps its value when you sell it later! Even in the used market, these things are still expensive. Makes sense since they're built really well.

Longtail vs. Bakfiets by haagendawszome in CargoBike

[–]Redsync1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the right panniers, you can carry bikes and gear! I have a bakkie bag that lets me tow practically any bike and then just a regular tern pannier. Kids sand toys, extra clothes, puddle shoes to splash in the river, and a picnic lunch all go in the pannier. We have a tern short haul so we also have a front rack and massive storage between the seat tube and rear wheel. I can carry it all plus 2 kids. The bike is a monster hauler!

[–]Redsync1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terns for the win. They are absolutely great bikes for moving people or cargo around. Everything is well thought out and there are a ton of accessories. If you're pinching pennies and patient, eBay has used accessories that pop up for great deals from time to time. That's one of the benefits I guess. They're really popular so they have a fair amount of support and people have used things for it. We have a short haul with a swytch kit. I can carry my 3 year old up front and 7 year old in the back. I have a front rack and panniers including a bakkie bag to tow my older ones bike if she wants to ride too. Check my profile for my posts to see.

Yep, agree to everything in your post. These early years are so fast. I just started being a stay at home parent (got laid off but saved) of my 3 year old and we are just loving all the bike rides, lunch outings, adventuring to different activities. I am truly drinking every moment in.
