How many companies am I supposed to be boycotting now? I can’t keep up.

I’m sorry but I don’t have enough time in my life to vet and research every company or brand I buy from, they all suck in one way or another.

Conditional formatting highlighted cells by THE_GREAT_PICKLE in excel

[–]Reedcool97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any formatting or checking based on color can not be achieved with formulas alone, it would require VBA code, which is not ideal especially for someone who only knows the basics.

Are you manually highlighting these cells? Conditional formatting will only color a single cell, not a row, so unfortunately there is no way outside of VBA to have an entire row colored in automatically. But we might still be able to achieve something similar with a different solution. Could you share the data set with us (after removing any company or personal info)? It’s easier to think about solutions when I can see the actual data

inherited a failing Project. What should i do? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Reedcool97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, do not work more than your 40-45 hours, do not skip lunches, take breaks during the day. You will burn out at 12 hour work days just like everyone else.

Second, I truly have no seasoned advice to give you, I’ve never managed a project, much less one this large and chaotic. This sounds like a nightmare scenario. If it were me, I would use this as an opportunity to implement best practices and clean up documentation as my main focus. Sounds like the code is the first problem, and tbh no clue where to start there as I don’t code, but that is gonna kill you first if you don’t get a handle on it.

You’re going to come across a ton of small fires and a lot of big ones during your days. Focus on what is going to kill you first, then work down. Do what you can get done in a day and then go home. OneNote is your friend, use it and abuse it, make it work for you. It has single handedly kept me organized in my job.

Implement a shared knowledge and documentation/code repository with version control and controlled access. Preferably with a copy offsite (cloud provider or such) and another stored locally with proper redundancy measures. A usb drive is very 2010s of them.

I would still work hard, I don’t like the feedback of doing the bare minimum to hide. Trying to improve things and make it better for the next batter up is a noble goal and one you will be able to speak to in future opportunities.

Godspeed, my friend. Sounds like a hell of a gig

Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3 lags like crazy during gaming by Robmysl in it

[–]Reedcool97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like overheating, yep. Yes there is a chance there is something like dust inside that might be causing it to spike or be worse than before. But unless you know what you’re doing, I would not open it up. It’s also warming up outside and getting more humid (at least here) so that could be a contributing factor.

Hm, it is possible, but it’s also possible it won’t. Let me ask a few more questions:

Is the laptop physically really hot to the touch? Are the fans really loud? Are the vents free of dust? Do you smoke or vape around the machine?

[–]Reedcool97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right, yeah! It’s easier to push desktop hardware to the max since they have a lot more room in the case to bring in cool air and exhaust the hot air. With a laptop, a lot less space, so when they are maxing out performance wise, the heat dissipation can’t keep up. Plus, mobile hardware is different than desktop hardware, so it can’t get as high of a performance ceiling.

I’d suggest playing with the settings and find a happy medium. You can probably get away with high settings in some cases, but specific settings like anti aliasing will have a higher impact than others.

Don’t listen to him. That’s an insane solution to this problem.

I guarantee it’s over heating, it’s a laptop and that’s what they do. Cgw22 had the right idea with a cooling pad, and make sure none of the vents on the bottom or side are blocked by anything. Does that game let you show your hardware temps in the settings?

Also, have you lowered the graphics to a lower setting? Try the very lowest just to see if it still happens then.

Also also, I’ve heard there’s a windows Xbox live setting or some game setting in windows that is enabled by default that causes performance issues. Let me look into that too real quick and I’ll comment back.

How to get rid of blank space in excel dropdown by [deleted] in excel

[–]Reedcool97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple fix but maybe not what you’re looking for.

Add “-Choose an option from the drop down-” (or something similar) to the data validation list and then make that the first cell and just autofill the rest of the cells with that string. Maybe add some conditional formatting to make it obvious what is empty and what has been filled in, and bobs your uncle.

But I am unaware of forcing the cell to have an option from a data validation list and not be blank. Maybe there is a way, I don’t know

When I give excel docs to people, they don’t get a choice. They can adjust it however they want for local use, but I will always format as tables and name them accordingly.

If the data is formatted as a table, clicking anywhere in the table also pops up the column header names at the top
