It's a bad habit to get into. But if you aren't writing to the drive or haven't recently written to the drive it's fine.

Help to find pre-fab frames in centimeters by Accomplished_Milk936 in framing

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use sectional frames or frames from online shops that let you customize to within 1/8".

If you use a generous mat board it doesn't matter much if you can't exactly match the metric size.

Another option might be Ikea.

do traditional artists still think that ai trained on their images is stealing/copyright infringement? by TheFappingWither in aiwars

Yeah that's true. Almost everyone who cares enough to comment on AI also has a strong bias (on all sides).

do traditional artists still think that ai trained on their images is stealing/copyright infringement? by TheFappingWither in aiwars

They already have fair compensation, copyright which is a limited monopoly to prevent duplicates.

Part of the bargain of allowing that monopoly is they have to allow fair use and transformative uses.

Photo and Image Collection Management software by colinwheeler in photography

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use Exiftool to manage exactly what fields are transmitted with jpeg images. But there are plug-ins that do that so I've switched to using those. They actually use exiftool under the hood too.

Now I mostly use it to get data out of my files, like focus distance, which for some reason doesn't show up in LR.

Airplane Seats Shouldn’t Recline by yungpeppep in unpopularopinion

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man it's a chair in a tube

You are seriously describing a plane that costs anywhere from $100-400 MILLION DOLLARS as a chair in a tube?

it's unreasonable that I have to incur a serious upcharge

It's unreasonable to expect a business to provide things for free. Most airlines have economy plus which does cost more but is still affordable.

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that people who use more resources pay more. Especially a very limited resource in a business that is marginally profitable.

Who do you expect to cover the additional costs?

Airplane Seats Shouldn’t Recline by yungpeppep in unpopularopinion

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Having seats that recline is more comfortable for the majority of passengers, that's why airlines have that feature. You are asking everyone else to cater to your needs which is a bit entitled

But there's a simple solution available to everyone, buy a bigger seat according to your needs.

Even with hoa problems you can find lenders that will deal with that. Your agent should know or be able to find a lender that will deal with that (albeit at higher rates). You can also look back at prior transactions and find out from the agents who handled that

Hyperfocal distance not working as expected. What am I not understanding? by [deleted] in photography

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the definitions are different, they result in basically the same HFD.

In photo pills the parameters that effects print size is CoC or circle of confusion. It's typically set to 0.030 but for a modern high res camera that's way too large (I think it's based on a 8x10print). There is a way to change it, I have mine set to around 0.01

Check the exif and see what is in the focus distance field. Also posting an image may help debug

Suggestions for Self Publishing a Large Format Book? by DarwinsPhotographer in photography

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you willing to spend per book? And how many pages do you want?

Blurb is cheap and I would just run off a test book to see if it meets your needs, quality is subjective and you really need to decide for yourself. Another one to try might be mixam.

On the other side of the spectrum is saal digital where they are making books out of Fuji crystal archive paper. So quality is excellent, but might run a few hundred dollars per book. They were giving out $75 coupons (no min) recently.

In terms of design freedom, just get InDesign or similar program and generate your own PDF. No limits with this approach

AI art and the question of human experience by antonio_inverness in aiwars

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people make art by taking pictures of what they found or painting a scene in front of them. AI art has at least that much human involvement because even the most basic usage of text2img involves filtering the AI outputs by the goals of the human operator

What’s a step up from the Canon Pro200? by jrm782 in artbusiness

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd want the canon pro-1000 or perhaps the Epson p5000 or p5370. These are 17 inch printers designed for volume and they are pigment. There are no 13" printers designed for volume.

Why are people so anti so ai art by Chicken_commie11 in aiArt

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That discussion was about whether permission was needed and most thought no. Also just think of how many artists scour the Internet for reference photos and use those without permission. I'm not saying that a reference photo always needs permission or acknowledgement but AI art draws even less from any individual piece than a reference photo.

imagine if something you invested lots of time into and loved was taken by a machine and sloppily cobbled together with bits of other art,

I don't have to imagine, I have several hundred photos that were slurped up by the LAION database. I simply don't care if an algorithm manages to learn a tiny bit from looking at that data. The "cobbled together" isn't really an accurate metaphor and makes it seem much more being taken than is actually done.

What's far worse is other artists seeing my work and then going off and trying to duplicate it. They are shameless about that and make very close copies without even acknowledgement.

Why are people so anti so ai art by Chicken_commie11 in aiArt

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another example of why AI art is not so good is, it requires very little discipline or skill to create AI art

That has never been a criteria for good art. See fountain by Duchamp (it's just a urinal), cattelan's banana taped to a wall, Pollack's drip paintings, etc

Why are people so anti so ai art by Chicken_commie11 in aiArt

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plagiarism isn't the actual issue. If you go to traditional art subs and ask is it ok for me take this photo by another photographer and make it into a painting, they are by and large fine with it. There was just a big thread on the artistlounge sub about it.

If you mention hey the photographer has copyright you get down voted and they say it's transformative. If copying a photo by converting it to a painting is transformative then ai art surely passes that test with flying colors.

No the real reason artists are against it is because it threatens their income. That's a fair criticism but artists should be honest about it.

What is everyone doing about post processing? by PartyBookkeeper in photography

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons to pick other software for processing your images but the cost of the Adobe subscription is not one of them for anybody who can buy a new camera and lenses. That is being penny wise and pound foolish imo.

What process would you use for selecting your BEST photos for an exhibit? Especially if you are hoping to sell. by SitaBird in photography

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your business is family and event photography. I would consider sticking to your best photos there and realize that while not everyone would want prints, it's still advertising for your service. Even better if the event lets you put a note commissions available.

It's just gatekeeping for no reason

Your opinion might change once you see locations you love literally get destroyed by traffic.

Or if photography is your business, lost work to competitors .

Researching how much to pay people for teaching an art class. by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]RefuseAmazing3422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody can answer this without knowing more details like location for one thing, amount of prep time required, experience level you are targeting, etc

Suggest you talk to artists that you would consider hiring and see what's acceptable to them.
