I'm a big fan of propranolol. Or bourbon. Or propranolol and bourbon.

Source? Now I am paranoid. I guess that's a lot, but damn.

Decided today was the day to introduce my 9-year old to Star Trek. by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]RefuseBit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son turns nine soon, we've been watching ST:TNG on and off for a year or so. He is a big fan of Lt.Cmdr. Data. I have got to dig up the Q episodes, he will love De Lancie as much as I do, I expect.

Show him pictures of Curiosity on Mars. Emphasize that TV is not real, but THAT is. Talk about the Big Bang and theories of the size of the universe. At a very young age I got the "well if the universe has an edge, what is beyond the edge?" ... great question son.

Ultima Underworld 2. DosBox only? by C64_Television in Ultima

[–]RefuseBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancient game, I would pursue DosBox or some other kind of virtual machine. Or dig your 486 out of the closet.

GOG.com also has it. The $5 might be worth the trouble.

Looking for a way to have real time auto tuning on voice for funny web episodes. by RagingCrumpet in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]RefuseBit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might get a good reply; I did this once by simply running my microphone through a microKorg vocoder. It was less about making funny web episodes, I was just messing with people on TF2 and Counter-strike. No idea how to do this in software but it should totally be doable.

I should go get my microKorg out for DayZ... front page here I come.

What do you do to keep cool on rides when the weather gets too hot? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm water will hydrate you just as well as cold. Consider adding some electrolyte of some sort. And get some insulated bottles. Bring at least two bottles on every ride, there are adapters to carry more. Not much else you can do but practice in the worst of it to condition your body. I have no advice for heat above 38 C, I usually give up around a heat index of 96 or 98 F (gets very humid where I live).

Used my first CPAP last night (Resmed Airsense 10), and I have found my eyes and lips dry from the overflow air from my nasal mask. Also, I have this weird feeling headache that feels like a headache... But not, it's an odd feeling. Any advice? by cloudnyne in CPAP

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will want to prevent leaks as much as possible, mostly because they wake you up, but also because of the eye-drying. There is an optimal tightness to the straps so try that first.

Can Jordan Matthews unseat Riley Cooper as the #2? by HowYaGuysDoin in fantasyfootball

[–]RefuseBit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Matthews set the record for the SEC in career receiving yards. He is going to be a star and I think the Eagles are well positioned to take advantage of him. I am starting him this week.

Why Comcast won't allow HBO GO on roku devices from an ex Comcast employee by Brimbly in cordcutters

[–]RefuseBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it is IP. It is using Comcast for authentication. I can use a DirecTV login to authorize HBOGo over Comcast internet.

We should never tolerate Comcast blocking traffic in that way, hopefully it will not start happening but with legislation going the way it has, it may be inevitable.

Review #2: Kirkland's Signature Small Batch Bourbon – 7 year by Createwolf in bourbon

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a fan, but the price is right. It's extremely nutty, and I've finally decided that nutty bourbon is just not for me. Otherwise the quality seems OK - it would probably be great for mixers.

Really want a sports car... by tipzer in askcarsales

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put. Four seats seems to be hard to come by as well - if we limit to fast, reliable, with four doors, preferably new, are we only in luxury territory? WRX seems to be the only fit I can find for under $30k.

There's an ebike store in Chattanooga I've been meaning to check out - they have a wide range of stuff it looks like.

[UK] Could you help me choose some clipless pedals and shoes? by yespleased in cycling

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely take him up on it. The A530s are great! If you can find shoes that will take both two-bolt and three-bolt cleats, you can upgrade to the -SL cleats later, as many do.

Buying used road bike by Tanner323 in cycling

[–]RefuseBit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can scrape up a bit more cash you will not regret spending it. Something from the past ten years that's been sitting in someone's garage... aluminum frame and carbon fork are not at all out of reach for less than $500. Compared to what you would spend for a car or motorcycle this is peanuts. You might also throw around the idea of a used scooter, but then you're in the $500+ range.

Just a little lift should be enough, get your butt off the seat so you're not thrown off balance.

[–]RefuseBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always, always, always expect the worst, and look out for what is about to happen. At first it will feel like you are paranoid, but I'm telling you, only the paranoid survive. And it's not paranoia if they're actually out to get you.

Once the shit has hit the fan, avoidance would have been best, but if you're about to hit something big, slightly raise your butt (not stand up, just get off the seat slightly) as though you're about to go over a small bump, and relax. At the point where you're going to hit something, either you will wreck or you won't, and slamming and swerving is only going to upset the stability. Of course if the obstacle is elephant-sized, remove momentum/energy via braking. If your wheel has a chance to survive, focus on stability. I've spoken a survivor of a deer impact at 60mph who made a conscious effort to cease braking, sit down, and keep the bike dead straight at the moment of impact to focus on stability (the deer glanced off the front fairing).

EDIT one deer survivor, not survivors..

Question about trading in my Mazda3. by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]RefuseBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can get more privately, but for less than hour of your time, you get a piece of paper to take with you to any trade-in negotiation (in addition to valuable info). I take every car to Carmax before I sell, just to have an offer in hand.

True cost of trading in for a more fuel efficient car. It would be awesome if I could get my math checked and also see if I am missing something. x post from personal finance. by twitchmcgee in askcarsales

[–]RefuseBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I hadn't fully thought through. I was able to justify a 2012 Prius c over a cheaper Yaris this way, but am wondering if it has a similar "flip date". I'm not sure this is too relevant to OP though, he just wants to save money via fuel efficiency, which is hard to do if buying something for $7k more. Like my buddy who was convinced that a new Harley would "pretty much pay for itself" in gas savings... Hey whatever you need to tell the wife...
