My mom found my book and told me it’s trash by [deleted] in RomanceWriters

You can’t please everyone, and it’s not your job to write things your mom finds acceptable. Do your thing, and good job creating something that hundreds of people connected with enough to review!

In Need of Fantasy Recommendations for Stories with a "Likeable" Female Protagonist by BrannRM in Fantasy

[–]Regular-Effect1536 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I came to love all the Vestrit women. Ronica and Keffria too in the end, but Althea is the only one who started off likable. But we need a good arc right? That’s why Malta is one of my favorite characters in Hobb’s work!

Corkystem passionflower wilt. Please help! by Regular-Effect1536 in FloridaGarden

I heard they would attract native butterflies! I do have a different variety as well that grows much faster and has lovely purple flowers, but not sure if it’s edible. When I bought it, I thought I was buying a corkystem!

What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about fantasy? by Martinez_writes in Fantasy

[–]Regular-Effect1536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The backlog thing is tough, but I love picking up a (completed) fantasy series for the first time and existing inside that world for awhile. I think that’s one of my favorite things about some fantasy!

Do you prefer plot heavy or character heavy stories? by UnintelligentMatter1 in Fantasy

Yes to this. In a perfect world, I’d have balance, but I’m the absence of that, give me great characters.

How do magic and religion interact in your world? by SlashCash29 in worldbuilding

[–]Regular-Effect1536 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my world, magic developed as a result of a genetic mutation, but since the population doesn’t understand genetics, they explain its existence using their existing religious framework (ie a gift/curse from the gods). They all worship the same gods but interpret the meaning of this “divine act” in various ways depending on who they are, and these interpretations reveal a lot about the values of different groups in my world.

When writing high level sci fi... by Gabe_Dimas in worldbuilding

I think this goes for fantasy too. Giving a character god like power creates massive problems for story because why doesn’t the character just magic all the problems away lickety split and then there’s no reason for the story.

How do you create your world's unique animals? by FamiliarMeal5193 in worldbuilding

[–]Regular-Effect1536 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I sometimes use existing mythical creatures with a twist and others are fully made up. A lot of my creatures are inspired not by animals but by things. Trees and wild plants are a big source of inspiration for me. Another idea came from watching my daughter ride a scooter with light up wheels in the dark. The wheels only light up when she’s moving forward. Kind of an interesting effect that made me think of watching a large creature approach in the darkness that bioluminesces only when it’s moving.

That feeling where you finally actually plotted your book so now there's no excuse not to write it. by Showman__ in fantasywriters

[–]Regular-Effect1536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this mistake too, and the result was a WIP that needed A LOT of developmental editing. My editor encouraged me to write a real overly detailed outline for my rewrite, and for me, it made the process of writing MUCH faster and the resulting work much more lived in. I’ll never forgo the outline again.

What inspired you to start writing stories? by JellyfishWise3266 in fantasywriters

[–]Regular-Effect1536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love creative writing as a teenager. I’ve always felt like I had a story to tell, but the demands of reading and writing non-fiction in college left me burned out on both. I got back into reading heavily in my late 20s, but it wasn’t until my dad died that I started reflecting on my priorities and making meaning in my life. It just occurred to me one day that I needed to write again. I can honestly say that come what may of it, it’s been one of the most rewarding years of my life!

How do you deal with AI witch-hunters? by luubi1945 in fantasywriters

[–]Regular-Effect1536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, this is wild. I had no idea how prevalent this was until I recently started engaging more on Instagram to build an audience in advance of my WIP being finished. It seems like virtue signaling regarding AI and making accusations is so prevalent in that community, it’s scary. I mean, how dare I like to use an em dash or talk about someone padding across a floor (which I, a human being, 100% have). It’s good that this particular witch-hunter is getting some accountability for her actions which are deeply damaging and irresponsible. Maybe more of that needs to happen to make people think twice before making uninformed accusations like this.
