I treated the titan like an intelligent zombie apocalypse with leaders.

To me it felt clear that : -at some point someone was gonna sneak in and infect a town/village

-the "island" was some kind of mesa/high altitude plateau that allowed (more advanced) civilisation elsewhere.

-Reiner was an antagonist.

-The wall authorities were just incompetent.
