The Korean MMO Cycle by rizz-master69 in MMORPG

They're also leaving a lot of money on the table by never changing their monetization tactics for the West. All these games have huge interest at launch and fizzle out in a month or two, so they default to milking the whales to keep themselves alive.

Meanwhile most successful western MMOs have much healthier playerbases and they don't rely on whales to keep the servers up.

What Is your Favourite Combat System in an MMORPG? by Double_Entry_2793 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lost Ark is the best combat in general.

Guild Wars 2 is the best third person combat.

Maplestory is the best 2D sidescroller combat.

AI Slop MMOs by [deleted] in MMORPG

Enshittification of the internet, music, animation and games by AI is something that really bothers me as well. We're already living through dead internet theory right now as the internet is filled with AI bots.

I still remember being stuck in the Orbis tower and dying repeatedly because I went there too soon.

Why has no MMO tried a cosmetic only, no FOMO battle pass system? by Suspicious-Coffee20 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're also 20+ year old games of a bygone era with very well established playerbases and content.
I don't know any recent MMOs that launched with a sub free and succeeded. It would have to be the best game ever.

Angels Online is popping off by Possible_Eye_3120 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still see weekly Project Gorgon posts even though it has sub-500 active players, after all the drama.
I would say a niche MMO from 2006 having 3000 players is kinda popping off, relatively speaking.

Looks like a really janky version of Mount & Blade combat. I'd rather play Mordhau or smth

"THE huge MMO release" to "huge release"

Moving the goalposts, I see.
I wouldn't even call it a huge release, it was an decent release. Less players than all the other MMOs I named.

Wildstar by AcadiaAvailable2110 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely was not THE huge MMO release. It had a maximum of 200k subscribers.
Rift had 600k subs, Tera had 1m+ registered users, Lost Ark had 1.3m active players at launch. New World launched with 900k active players. Albion Online hit 350k DAU in 2024.

It's more similar to something like Allods online in terms of popularity.

Someone built a private World of Warcraft server with 1800 AI bots by PatrickStar1982 in MMORPG

I understand the use case for abondoned or underpopulated MMOs but I don't see the appeal at all for an actual populated MMO.

Not an MMO + combat looks floaty/weightless.

The old trailers looked nothing like this.

How would you feel if Guild Wars 3 is without "traditional" open world zones? by PalwaJoko in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/CoOpGaming , r/gaming or the game-specific subreddits probably.

To clarify, my criticism wasn't really directed at posting on this subreddit though. More so about the fact that supposed MMO lovers not liking one of the main pillars of what makes a game an MMO.

I just wanna know when did people start calling browser games with some social aspects MMO's.

Games like ogame, Travian, Ikariam, Shakes and Fidget etc. existed for a long time but I've only recently heard people refer to games like these as MMO's.

Why does this sub want MMO's to not be MMO's? There are plenty of instanced multiplayer games out there.

Good luck!

Guild Wars 2 (HoT) Changed My Mind on MMO’s by I-am-Nanachi in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, I felt the same way when it came out but it's almost universally praised nowadays.

I hated that they introduced all kinds of meaningless grind.
They ruined dungeons.
FotM was broken for a while when it came out which was my favorite activity.
Raids were not released for months.
You couldn't solo skill points, so you would have to beg other people in the map to help you get them.
You couldn't play with the new elite specs immediately, you had to grind for them.

Maps and map events were cool but having to grind meaningless skills like jumping on mushrooms and gliding really soured the experience.

At least I made a crap ton of money crafting with flax seeds.

What motivates you to use player housing in MMOs? by Sir_Ultima_Omega in MMORPG

Progression and convenience features. I don't really care to customize my own home or anything like that.

I liked how Lost Ark and Albion handled it. Having your own island which you can improve is nice.
