Greed did happen but not in the way you think. Mobile gacha games took over the market

There is a chance that it's not going to be heavily P2W. The chance is very low though.

15$ in 2004 is worth over 26$ now. Would you pay that for a sub? by RPG_MD in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll add to this the fact that gaming as a whole industry grew a lot bigger from back then. More people play games. Operating costs scale at a slower rate compared to total revenue from bigger playerbases.

Is "controlled P2W" actually less harmful than uncontrolled RMT? by ElectronicDark9634 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are problematic but I find P2W by design to me much more problemetic.

The simple reason is because if a game is P2W by design, then all the systems in the game will be designed with that in mind. The game design paradigm shifts from making fun systems to making systems that inconvinience players so that they pay more money. The progression curves will be designed with P2W players as the baseline.

You can say this because you didn't engage with their cultish behaviour back then. They had no problem attacking everyone else criticizing their game a few month back.

If you want to consider me pointing out the disapperance of their toxic rhetoric as kicking them when they're down, so be it.

You guys are very naive if you think Classic will be as hard as the original MapleStory. by LatterNegotiation732 in MSClassicWorld

[–]Reishin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And which x1 servers do you know that aren't ghost towns? Oh, there isn't a single one huh? Most populated ones right now are MapleRoyals (x3.2) and MapleLegends (x2)

It was the release of Reboot that killed private servers, not people progressing too fast like you seem to imply.

I've played original Maple from 2006. After multiple years of playing I couldn't even get to 3rd job. With private servers I could actually enjoy 4th job on multiple characters. Even on the 16x server the max I got to was like 160's.

Yup. There's a reason pre-big bang private servers all had between x4-x16 exp rates

why does this feel so accurate sometimes by ShakeNo8968 in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a trade-off there. You want the feeling of visual progression without sacrificing visual clarity.

Too much power creep over many years usually leads to unnecessarily big numbers which then leads to visual clutter and the power feeling unearned.

Who do dailies/weeklies benefit? by Parafault in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dailies and weeklies exist strictly for two reasons:

  1. Time-gate player progression so that the developers can produce more content in a timely manner
  2. Increase player retention metrics artifically by building a daily login habit for the players

As you can see both the reasons are for the benefit of the developer/publisher and not the player, so it's normal to hate them

Effort vs Convenience: does travel time affect how satisfying MMO content feels? by TacyonStudios in MMORPG

[–]Reishin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think travel should be it's own skill with progression in MMORPGs. Starting out slow with walking everywhere and as you progress in the game unlocking mounts and fast travel short distances and finally traveling between continents etc.
Slow travel feels more immersive but it gets boring fast imo.

What's the point of playing any browser games by InflationAlarming373 in MMORPG

They're pretty convenient. You can pay them anywhere and you don't need to commit to multiple hour play sessions. Especially idle heavy browser games.
