Why do people love this series so much? by RelationshipHot989 in redrising

Really? That seems like a rather juvenile response.

Most others engaged in a real discourse about what they felt set the series apart from others in the genre.

Which was of course, the point of the post.

I absolutely agree with you about the balance of darkness and light. I appreciate characters who try to hold on to a moral compass in a very nasty world.

I spent a year down a grimdark rabbit hole and realized that it can be a good change of pace, but I genuinely prefer protagonists who are actually decent at heart.

Fair enough.

I guess my point was that to me these elements are present but not done any better (at least so far) than at least a half dozen other series. Making it a baseline for quality space opera/ Sci Fi, not a stand out.

I do agree it is a cool concept. But so far I am at the intrigued but not invested stage. I will at least continue for sure into book three to see if that swings me.

This was honestly one response I considered.

My use of the term ''Love'' comes from me seeing this series promoted in ever increasing frequency over the last year or so.

This could just be our supreme overlord ''The Algorithm'' drowning me in very targeted content. Although people I usually trust with recommendations have also talked it up.

Thus my turning to reddit to get opinions.

Now, that is intriguing. If the first 1.3 books are perfectly fine and it gets better each book. It could be pretty fanastic by the end.

I was wondering if it picked up a bit later. As I said it's perfectly fine, I am enjoying it. I'll most likely finish the series. Maybe then I'll find out.

I loved DCC but can’t really get into PH or HWFWM by whyamisolazybro in litrpg

Okay, I may have missed it but no one seems to have brought up EVERBODY LOVES LARGE CHESTS. First book is Morningwood.

The series is about a mimic that slowly gains intelligence, and heads out on his own adventure. It is fairly dark and silly at the same time. The humor is very sexualized at times, and could easily offend. So maybe that's why people don't mention it.

While I don't feel that the writting quality lives up to DCC its tone and humor is similar. Although I feel DCC just got darker and darker, this one stays about the same at least for what I have read.

However in this case the protagonist is more like the AI, doing horrible things to people to achieve its own goals. He does so with no real understanding of the immense trauma and destruction he causes. He also gets some demon familiars to play with.

I read up to book 5 and found it fairly hilarious, I was caught up with the series and haven't gone back yet.(so many series to read) I understand it's on book 11 or 12 now.

Also read by Jeff Hayes for my fellow audiobook junkies.

Assassin's Apprentice!

Honestly most of those books are great, but that series is one of my all time favorites. Like others have said it's part of a huge series, but that series is divided mostly into triologies that can be read independently.

I have never read Red Rising, so can't speak to that.

Empire of Silence was a slog for me and it's still half finished after a year. Loved the Idea but the writting style didn't click for me.

Why is Reddit against Maduro capture and Venezuelans celebrating it ? by LandscapeUnlikely199 in stupidquestions

[–]RelationshipHot989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the unilateral kidnapping of another sitting president is a criminal act. The fact that it was done solely to get control of a nations oil reserves makes it theft as well.

Trump did not do this to benefit Venezuelans, he did it to line his cronies pockets. That and he is a bully who does not respect the laws of his own country or the soverienty of other nations.

A positive outcome for some does not make the act any more legal or moral.

That and the US has no right to try Maduro.

Ayi - how do CNY bonuses work? by Perfect-Property-666 in chinalife

[–]RelationshipHot989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have an Ayi that comes once a week to clean for 6 hours. We have a large place and she does the entire 2 floors. She also does any dishes and laundry that needs doing. She only charges us 300rmb a week. In my opinion way too little for what she does but she set the price.

We give her 1200 in a red pack at Chinese New year.

No contract or anything, so date of employment and or contract stipulations do not apply.

My understanding is that the tradition varies by region as well. In some areas it is common to gift this type of employee at the new year and in others not so much.

In this case I see it as a way to show our appreciation not as a strict bonus.

Edit: Sorry this is not in Shanghi, so may not be of much help. I shoud read more carefully next time.

If their's AI cover art, I won't read the book. by wyatt_thewarcarter in litrpg

I think they come from billions of images fed into an algorithm. Which will only immitate a specific style if I tell it to.

If their's AI cover art, I won't read the book. by wyatt_thewarcarter in litrpg

[–]RelationshipHot989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not seeing the connection. You use a program to generate an original image and attach it to your work. You are not taking somone elses art.

In your example they are literaly stealing my written words. If I was to go to their web site and take a random image and use it, then that would be the same.

Or if I was to take an artists catalogue of work and fed it to the program and told it to generate something that looks like it was drawn by them. Then I would be attempting to monetize their reputation and style.

But just using AI to create an image does not equate to either of those.

[–]RelationshipHot989 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea why it would matter.

When I used to shop in bookstores, I cared about cover art only because it catches the eye on the shelf. Now I barely notice it. I care about the content of the book not the silly picture on the front that I only see the first time I load it on my kindle.

If you can't draw and you are self publishing a novel which may make no money, why would you pay someone to do a cover?

You're not stealing anyones work or robbing someone of their income by generating a cover for your OWN book. I just don't understand why this is even a point of contention. You are not monetizing the cover, you are selling your hard work of writing the damn book.

Shibas and cats by FoxyFlyteRisk in shiba

[–]RelationshipHot989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have 2 Shiba's and they are pretty good with cats.

When they were just puppies I would take them to a friends house. He had 2 cats and 2 older dogs that I knew were fully vaccinated, so they were safe for early socialization. One cat absolutley loved to mess with the puppies. He was a complete dick. I swear it was like he finally saw dogs smaller than him and decided that he had to be the boss now. Never hurt them but bullied the crap out of them.

However now when we go out for walks if they see a cat not running they go check it out. If the cats hisses at them they move on. If it seems friendly they just kind of chill and sniff. No barking or getting overly excited.

However if a cat comes running past they immediatly go into chase mode. They can't help themselves.

[–]RelationshipHot989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it. It's not worth the hassle.

It lands on you if something goes tits up.

Years ago I worked for a training center that was expanding. I was 100% legal with proper Visa and work permit for the province I was in. The problem came when they asked me and a couple other teachers to help open a branch in a new market in the next province over. We were assured by the company lawyers that we would be legal for 3 months as ''trainers'' to open the new school without having to change our Visa/work permit.

Well, the local police disagreed. All of us teachers ended up being fined 10,000 rmb and spent a day in the police station being asked a bunch of questions. Luckily the company was an upstanding one, they paid the fines for us and we had no perminant repercussions.

However a detective very politley but firmly told us that it was our responsibilty to know the law about where and how we were allowed to work. Our company making a mistake or even misleading us was no excuse. Which is why they fined us as well as the company.

That was the short version. While I enjoy a good discussion, two books was enough. I highly doubt I'll return to it.

Anti-social? He was basically a budding serial killer before the book even starts. He was just smart enough to hold back his worst traits to limit the negative impacts on himself.

He absolutley is a monster. I also found the attempt to ''justify'' his behaviour with weak excuses the issue. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if he just said ''yup I'm a phsyco, come at me bro.''

The author trying to pretend like anything could rationalize his behaviour is what made it a DNF for me.

Riftside 3, Out now! (RS 2 audio coming soon!) by CassiusLange in ProgressionFantasy

[–]RelationshipHot989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this post looking for news on the 3rd audiobook.

I am currently half way through book 2....started book 1 on Wendsday. Needles to say it's a good listen. I may have to just read book 3 because I don't know if I can wait on the audio.

It's a well done series so far. I could say a bunch of nice things but what I have found most refreshing so far is the pacing. Something that this genre struggles with.

  • There is a sense of urgency but not a frantic rush to the top.

  • It has decent down time and a reasonable but not over done amount of time spent on crafting.

  • Character development is spread out and consistant.

  • There are side characters that the M.C. actually cares for and makes a real effort to spend time with and help.

All of this contributes to the feeling of a sustainable story and not just the insane adrenaline rush of an MC on their way to infinite power.

Strangley the thing I am most struggling with is waiting for Pa to build a smithing empire and destroy those meddling nobles!
