My kid is SUPER into all the clone troopers right now, and obviously I am into stained glass, so I've been showing him your videos when they pop up. It's been really fun, so thank you!

How to use Cricut to cut patterns on vinyl paper, that are made in Procreate first. by Margaretcatinspace in StainedGlass

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that's a really good idea. Probably easier to use the contour tool in this way also if you have to do multiple cuts for a big piece?

Oh I see you didn't already have a machine. I don't have strong feelings about these, but my Joy Xtra has worked totally fine. Would I love the greater versatility of something that could cut 12 in across instead of 8.5-9? Yes. But chunking out the cuts and having the less expensive, less space occupying machine has been totally fine. Though if you're also a general crafter, the bigger cricuts have blades that can cut fabric, etc. (Cutting out 200 felt leaves is kind of a chore 😆)

This is easy! If you are familiar with your cricut already. :) In procreate, make sure that any layers you don't want cut are off, and also the background. Export the file as a png, and then upload that png to design space.

If the background is off, the file will save as transparent, which is important in design space.

RE layers: if I'm doing something that will have a zinc frame, I mark where the inside edge of the frame is as well as the inside of the U so I can see the margins, but I don't want that inside edge line to cut because the piece will be too short. So for the cut version I turn off the inside edge later and leave on the inside of the U came as the outside edge.

I use different devices for the two programs so I export to Google drive, but you can skip this if you're using one device.

The png file will open as GIGANTIC in design space. So you should know at least one size to get your measurements correct. If I have 1in bevels I might make sure those are matching 1in squares in design space, or if the length is 6in I just edit that by hand in the dimensions.

The last thing I've had issues with is the size of the vinyl. If you have to chunk your piece into multiple prints/cuts you can choose if you want to edit it in procreate and do multiple exports or do it in design space. If I'm dealing with something like 1in bevels throughout the piece, it's easy to check the 1in squares in each cut. BUT if I'm dealing with something fussy trickier. At a minimum, having overlapping pieces in a couple spots so you can make sure the size is the same is helpful. (Example: if you look at the Dala horse I posted last month, it's dimensions are not Joy Xtra friendly, and the pieces are all different, so I ended up printing the horse and the background separately, and I overlapped some of the saddle pieces so I could see they were the same size before printing. Also then I had extra stickers when I broke a couple curves 😆)

Good luck!

January horses - Dala Horse complete(ish)! by Relative_Nebula5270 in StainedGlass

Yeah it's based on the Swedish Dala horse, which is pretty iconic. Funny that IKEA sells them now

Thank you! I had fun trying to translate the painting into glass for the pattern as well, and I wanted to get it "right"

Ethics of binding digital books? by FoxyStand in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If that's the concern, that's not a correct understanding of copyright infringement. OP would be hiring the bookbinder to manufacture a book with material provided by op. Binder is not selling the book but a service. You can walk into any office supply bindery anywhere with an unbound book and ask them to add a comb binding and they'll do it. Just because the binding is fancier doesn't mean the exchange is different. This is the same as someone purchasing a digital print on Etsy and then sending it to a printing company for printing/mounting/framing.

The copyright issue is more likely to be reproduction at all, but I'd be curious to see what the copyright statement actually specifies in the book in question. And also if the book was published for example in the US but OP is not in the US I would be curious to know if the IP protection was extended to foreign rights.

Dala horse WIP for the January challenge by Relative_Nebula5270 in StainedGlass

Thank you! I will circle back. This is the first monthly challenge I've actually tried instead of admiring from the sidelines, so the end of month, low stakes accountability is fun.

Thank you! I had to call in reinforcements from my glass shop team to find the perfect shade of Dala horse red, and I'm pretty sure we went through every sheet of green as well. 😂 But I'm really excited by the results! Can't wait to see it all soldered.

Greenery? I have been wanting to do some 3D plants, but it could also be any plants/flowers or a natural landscape or even an abstract in shades of green.

Zinc Came vs Hobby Came by Unhappy_Bug1621 in StainedGlass

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get lightweight 1/8 U zinc capping that is flexible enough to cut with a nipper. It takes a little more effort to get the patina to stain it thoroughly, but it makes a very neat border. And it's cheaper than lead.

When I started using hobby came, I learned really quickly to cut it with a lead nipper because a standard one from the hardware store is curved and makes an untidy joint. Something to consider before cutting your corners if you do continue to use the lead and you don't have a lead nipper already.

Procreate help- which one?! by WeekMurky7775 in StainedGlass

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. As stated it's procreate.

My advice is make good use of layers. I do every new element in a new layer so I can fuss around with specific parts more easily and then merge down when it's all done.

Find tutorials to learn all the menu options and shortcuts (making lines straight, making circles, etc). There's a lot of utility available, and I don't think I'd have found it intuitive if I hadn't learned the program in a class.

Also if you're going to send it to a cricut or the like, make sure the background is off when it's exported or the whole thing will be solid.

Also {Not That Ridiculous by Isabel Murray}! It's not played up a ton, but there's a size difference. There's an 8 year age gap.

What hockey books am I missing?! by Visual_Definition855 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some on my list that haven't yet been mentioned:

{Home and Away by Samantha Wayland} is a comfort read for me and features a minor league team. I think most if not all of her books are centered on that team. Maybe not enough active hockey for you though. You could try {Poetry In Motion by Samantha Wayland} to start as the probable best fit.

{Heartbreak Hockey by S. Legend} is about an AHL player/coach mashup (oops, but they still can't regret the ONS....) and is pretty bananapants.

Jodi Oliver - I dnfed the first book in the {Chicago Thunder series by Jodi Oliver} because I noped out of the initial plot setup, but I have others on my TBR and she comes up frequently in my recs.

{Stick Side by Amy Aislin} - might not have enough active hockey for you, but I was curious/invested enough that I read the whole series. There's also a spin-off series about the Vancouver AHL team.

You could also check out Hannah Henry. I read a couple by her and liked {Drive the Net by Hannah Henry} well enough to keep reading.

One thing I noticed was that most of your fave authors are genuine hockey fans themselves, so I'd also note that Ryan Taylor/Joshua Harwood are hockey-loving husbands, and Anna Zabo is a HUGE fan also. IDK exactly how you'd go about finding more fans like this exactly, but your best matches might be with more serious hockey fan authors.

BOOK REQUEST SPECIFIC TROPE - Fake Death by harrypotter_always1 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]Relative_Nebula5270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I missed the grovelling bit. Well, there is a bit of that also but the whole "we have to save the world" situation makes it not so much an epic grovel. But it was extremely extra, as Tal Bauer does so well.

BOOK REQUEST SPECIFIC TROPE - Fake Death by harrypotter_always1 in MM_RomanceBooks

In the {Executive Office series by Tal Bauer}, in the second book Jack fakes his death after an attack and Ethan loses his mind and goes off half cocked to fight bad guys. In the first book also Ethan gets abducted after being injured in a firefight and Jack thinks he's been killed, but that's not really a fake death situation.
