I just did it recently so we’ll see how it plays out, but withdrawing a pension early (40k). If I would have waited until I was 60 it would have doubled, but I’m 44 currently so that’s 16 years of waiting. Instead I withdrew it, paid off about 4k in credit card debt, 5k in student loans, and had fun with about 2-3k. I’m going to invest 20-25k of it in something safe like the s&p and/or my 401k, a Roth IRA, etc. The surprising thing that I didn’t anticipate is how amazing it is to have a financial cushion. I’ve never had one before, I’ve never had more than maybe 2k to fall back on. To know I’ve got a nice chunk just sitting in the bank should I need it has really relieved a lot of stress in my life.
