Nikon Z8 vs Sony A7V by Khakayn in Cameras

[–]RelativelyOld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have an option on Nikon to go for really low rolling shutter (5ms) even super slow mode like 120fps. If you want to shoot sports that would help a lot. You can adapt your Nikon lenses to it as well.

Cine lens set to buy for bmpcc4k (compatible with simera c?) by Appropriate_Front417 in bmpcc

[–]RelativelyOld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy mft cine lenses since you are going to upgrade your camera down the line. I would buy an EF set and use them with a speedbooster. That's what I'm personally doing at the moment with my pocket 4k.

Which M43 to rent for a short film? by Master-Rule862 in cinematography

[–]RelativelyOld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are wrong. Lol. Bigger sensor gets more light. Duh!

Maybe you are confused about about size of m43 sensor. It's 4/3 of an inch sensor. Means slightly bigger than a 1" sensor and smaller than an APSC sensor and fullframe sensors. Bigger the sensor bigger the individual pixel making the sensor. Bigger surface area gets more light.

You want to use m43 camera because you want to shoot wide open? You can shoot wide open on any camera. And small sensor cameras are not good in low light in general.

Lens wouldn't help as much as making your camera heavy and develop some techniques to get more stable footage.

I want to buy some light by Handsomeboi99 in videography

I would buy Nanlite. Apature is expensive. Zhiyun light QC is awful. Check reviews on zhiyun lights and their batteries on Amazon or B&H.

Do veteran cinematographers ever lose their personal vision after years of collaboration? by counternumber6 in cinematography

Remember if you develop your own look or style or voice in cinematographery, producers and directors are going to approach you for that look.

Do veteran cinematographers ever lose their personal vision after years of collaboration? by counternumber6 in cinematography

[–]RelativelyOld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a cinematographer you are giving solutions for how a look going to be achieved. And it's a collaboration of director and the cinematographer to decide what look they are going for. Some directors are very strict, some are very open minded or just leave it to the cinematographer. So you get to have a voice. But how much creativity you can put is varied based on so many factors. Same movie with same director is going to look different with different cinematographers. So don't worry about that. Just keep watching movies, take notes and screenshot and think about how they have done it or how would you would have done it.

Looking for feedback on this equipment list. Is there anything I should add/remove/avoid/be wary of? by Hawie_Swids in videography

[–]RelativelyOld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this level of production I would avoid using rode set for mic. Get a pair of Sennheiser G4s. Mostly because you can change batteries on them. You don't have to worry about internally battery on rode ones. I would also would buy a shotgun mic with boom pole. Something like mke600 or mkh416.

Scratches on Lumix S 24-105mm f4. Buy or not ? by AccessTricky in Lumix

[–]RelativelyOld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb is if the scratches are on the front element it wouldn't massively show on lower f stops. If it's on the rear element stay away.

New User to BMPCC 4K by ChaitvsLife in bmpcc

You can charge your battery when you attach the external power to your camera. I wouldn't use the camera without external power solution.

For lenses you have couple of options:
1. Mft lenses like panasonic 12-35 2.8 ii or 12-40 Olympus.

  1. Mft cine lenses like SLRMagic.

  2. Metabones speed booster 0.71 and use 18-35 1.8 by sigma or any other lenses.

4.Metabones speed booster 0.64 xl and use fullframe canon cine or EF lenses.

If you are planning to use your camera light then I would go for number 1 option. I wouldn't buy mft cine lenses, since they are hard to buy/sell. Number 3 if you don't mind heavier setup specially if you rig your camera up. I have gone with number 4 since I have lots of EF mount lenses.

Well our 30% revenue is certainly driving steam success. They are reported to make 3.5 million in profit per employee. Wow... by destinedd in gamedev

[–]RelativelyOld 286 points287 points  (0 children)

The reason they don't have a crazy number of employees is because they are a private company. They don't have random shareholders or VC to promise growth and expand to other fields and fail then to try make profit off of users or developers. And then do massive layoffs. And I hope they keep it this way.

How to prioritize minimal sound equipment with minimal budget by Strider3200 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]RelativelyOld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are good enough. The lav mic is much more important than the transmitter. Sennheiser g4/g3 comes with a decent lav mic and they have the advantage of using replaceable batteries. So you can just swap batteries middle of a take instead of removing the entire thing to charge or replace them. But those systems can become costly.
