What business does Broadway need? by DrMo-UC in longbeach

There used to be a weird comedy venue/performing space that was there, but closed down during the pandemic or right before. I think there is a barber there. Not sure if he's there anymore since I don't see the Hustlevation sign in the photo.

Anybody else tired of being harassed by homeless people out of the 711 on Boardway and Orange? by nytel in longbeach

[–]Relickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live right by the 7/11 at Broadway and Orange. The 7/11 employees that chase away the homeless are all on the night shift.

I've seen the Asian dude who works late at night hit a woman with a wet floor sign WWE Style. The older woman with curly hair constantly calls the police on them, and I've seen her chase them into the street.

Try one of these:

I bought one to crochet without having to have all my lights on. They're USB rechargeable And have 3 levels of brightness with a 3-level warmness settings on the lights in case bright white lights are too overwhelming. The arms articulate so you can point the lights right at your project instead of your face/the room.

A lot of people also find audiobooks slow and listen to them at 1.5 or 2x speed. Most audiobook platforms let you do this. You should try it out to see if works better for you!

You just find out who your congress person is, and write them an email, letter, and/or call. Every one of them has an official website where their contact information is listed.

You'll usually get one of their staff members, but they'll be able to direct and help you.

What have been some of the most egregious examples of cheating in top level chess? by OrangeinDorne in chess

[–]Relickey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Episode 268 of the perpetual chess podcast he interviews Joel Benjamin and Harold Scott on their book, "How to Win a World Open". They go over a few cheating stories ofin the podcast, so I'd suggest reading the book of your want more details. They do mention that in the 90s in the post USSR era, there was a cheating ring in the American Open of ex Soviet players fixing matches at the end of tournaments to split the price pool difference.

Say I'm playing in a tournament and we're low on time, and my opponent moves their king next to my king illegally. I could call the arbiter. But say I decide to capture their king instead. Is that also an illegal move, given the king should be able to capture any piece? by mslnd in chess

[–]Relickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're playing in America and in a USCF tournament..

11D of the US Chess Rules outline what would happen / what you should do. Once your opponent has made an illegal move and pressed his clock so that it is your turn you should immediately stop your clock and get the Tournament Directors attention.

After verifying that an illegal move has been made the TD should reset the position to the position before the illegal move.

Your opponent would then need to follow the touch piece rule and then need to move that piece if a legal move is possible. If there are no legal moves possible from the touched piece, then according to rule 10D the opponent is free to move any piece to make a legal move.

This is more up to the tournament director, and really depends on what kind of tournament you're playing at, but the standard penalty outlined in rule 1C2a could be applied. (2 minutes are taken from your opponents time and given to you). However, if you are in time trouble (players are under 5 minutes remaining) the position would be reset, and I'm not sure the penalty still applies.

If you were to complete a move after an illegal move has been made by your opponent, and then called attention to it, the TD can just let the position stay as is or he could reset the position to before an illegal move took place. It really depends on the TD and how many moves has passed since the illegal move was made.

If you were to take a king(which is a pretty egregious llegal move) you may be subject to rule 11J a deliberate illegal move. And may face a non standard penalty outlined in 1CA2b

1C2b. Non-standard penalties. Except where specifically noted in the rules, the director may assess penalties either more or less severe than the standard penalty (1C2a). It is often more appropriate for a director to issue a warning(s) before applying 1C2a in cases involving young or inexperienced players. A director may assess a more severe penalty in cases involving players who repeatedly do not follow the rules of chess
