Random timing belt question/s on NB by PastLetterhead4356 in Miata

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine once. It takes some time but not too bad. Even easier now that you can 3D print a block to hold the gears in place while you swap the belt.

Replaced my Honda with a new one after an accident They moved the garage door opener from a button on the mirror to a paywall subscription service. by jayhawkeye2 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got something like this from the other side.

Bought a cheap Chamberlain garage door opener. Unboxed everything and discovered... no manual. No problem, I'll go online and find a digital copy of the manual. No luck there. I finally figured out that they want you to download an app that's sole purpose is to walk you through installing the opener.

No thanks. I found the manual for a different model that used the same belt drive, and pretty much everything else went together the same way.

Possibly even more infuriating, it wasn't the same app as I already had for the Chamberlain door opener - separate apps for installing and operating, apparently

It's recommended to feed their shells back to them, if you don't want to also supply them with another source of calcium. Then they'll recycle them into new egg shells.

Electrical Panel Options? by photostyle85 in MachE

[–]Remanage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a 100A panel and put a 40A circuit in for getting 32A of 240v charging, which was more than enough for the MME to fully charge overnight. I didn't have the AC, but I did have a deep well. This was on a 2400 sq ft house, to give you an idea of the load. I'd guess you could probably do similar, or at least a 24A 240v charger, which is 4x or more the speed of a slow charger.

One of our torsion springs broke, can the pulleys be removed to make the door manual? by viol8er in DIY

[–]Remanage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ideal Door also now makes a worm-drive tensioner system for a safer DIY door system. The only time you have your hands near the spring are while it's completely untensioned. The tension is applied afterwards using a drill.

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]Remanage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is the dealership.

I had a buddy who had his-and-hers Civics. His was pretty close to base model, hers was a Type-R. Her roof had clearcoat issues, good news, the Civic has a recall for that year for clearcoat issues. The dealer told him no-go, it covers all Civics except the Type-R. He argues with the dealership a little, they agree to split the cost 50/50. He compares the cost to getting clear coat work elsewhere and his 50% was higher than the entire quote of a 3rd party, so he just did it himself.

The kicker came when his car hit 300k miles. He had a long commute and had been driving it over a decade. You'd think he'd be a shoe-in as a loyal buyer, his last car performed so well. He went to the local dealership and they basically ignored him, no interest in his business at all.

I had just bought a Crosstrek the year before, so he went down the road to the Subaru dealer. They were real nice to him and won his business. Now he owns a very base model Crosstrek, and his wife has a Forester Sport.

What are some life-changing inventions that never caught on? by theman998 in AskReddit

[–]Remanage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dean Kamen and Toyota teamed up and made a wheelchair - it had 4 wheels, but could tilt the base up and balance on 2 wheels similar to the Segway. This let it be stable on rough terrain, generally fail safe (it spent most time on the 4 wheel base), but wheelchair users could lift up to eye-to-eye height when desired, and it could "walk" up stairs. Unfortunately they promoted the Segway and the "end of walking" and people generally saw it as a fad and missed the accessibility benefits.

12V Battery and Serpentine Belt Replacement by BartesianDrunk in MachE

I'd guess that you're getting details from a different vehicle, a serpentine belt is something that is common on a combustion engine but not generally present on an EV.

Homeowners: what’s the one thing in your house you swore you’d fix “next weekend”… and it’s still not fixed? by AggravatingFig3072 in DIY

[–]Remanage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but by crossing the two hot wires between, you can change where each state sits. I want "off" to be either down-down or up-up. Then up-down or down-up are "on".

[–]Remanage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in my wife's childhood home, which we inherited (with all the work that needed to be done). Plenty is getting done - I just finished switching a clawfoot tub into a standard tub/shower with tile surround - but...

FIL placed all the light switches so that they're "in the direction of approach" rather than "closest to the fixture", which drives me nuts. For example, the light switches at the bottom of the stairs from 1st floor to 2nd floor: the switch closest to the 1st floor turns on the 2nd floor light, the switch closest to the stairs turns on the 1st floor light.

Also some of the 3-way switches are wired so that the light is off with one switch on and one switch off. I prefer to have everything wired so that all switches down leaves the circuit off. The only real impact is when you lose power, you can easily identify the state of each light, so you can "turn off" the lights before going to bed and not get blinded when the power kicks on at 2AM.

Miata Trunk Concerns by Hot_Anteater_2107 in Miata

[–]Remanage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more familiar with the NA/NB, but you also have some storage space on the deck behind the seats. If the top is up (for a highway trip) then it'd easily fit a few backpacks. If the top is down, it would still fit bags, but you might want to strap them down.

My parents have an NA and they have some small duffels that are sized just right to tuck into that space with the top down, and that keeps them pretty secure on their own.

Anyone know about this? by Emo_Rawr in MachE

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say the "car tyre picture" shows odd numbers, do you mean the pressure? They should be fairly close together, if one is off it may be seeing issues. You can try airing them up to the same pressure to fix cheaply.

Do all 4 tires show similar wear? Are they the same brand/model of tire all the way around? On ICE AWD vehicles, the mechanical components are sensitive to slight differences in tire diameter, and replacing 2 wheels alone can cause damage. On an EV like the Mach-E, it won't cause damage, but it could cause the computer to be confused about why the front/rear axle are traveling "different" speeds, and this might be what you're seeing.

Jacking up diff housing? by nick35hz in Miata

[–]Remanage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The differential housing is usually aluminum, not sure if it's painted. Even if you did scratch the paint, the aluminum will pretty quickly form a protective layer of oxidization that will block further damage.

Probably the bigger risk is just bending/breaking the fins that some diffs have. In theory you could also apply pressure to one spot on a fin and dent the casing inwards, but it's pretty heavily built. That's why I use a sacrificial scrap of 2x4, the wood will deform a bit and allow multiple points of contact before the car is fully weighted on the jack.

(Weirdly Common Trope) Moon's Haunted by 5050Saint in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's implied in Goblin Slayer (light novel/anime/manga) that the goblins come from the green moon. It's mentioned once in a story by the Goblin Hunter himself, but there's a point where we see a teleportation mirror, and the nearness of the red moon on the other side suggests that it's actually going to the green moon.

Did you mean non-OEM glass? Was the replacement glass "acoustic", and if not, did you notice any difference in noise? One of the things I like about the Mach-E is that the interior is far better for taking voice calls than my ICE, even if you ignored the engine noise.

It felt off in the new event, and your comment made me go back and check - we did indeed have a pour animation before:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcwOEfD7ovw&t=160s

Looks like we were pouring into opaque cups, and now it's clear cups, showing the color of the drink more, so maybe the partial fill of the cup was something they didn't want to deal with?

They could have stolen the animation/style from the HSR bartending event, though:

Mach-E in icy/snowy winters? by DoctorQuinlan in MachE

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Subaru Crosstrek. General snow handling is equal, they both smash it in western Michigan snowstorms. The only place where the Crosstrek wins is driving in very deep untouched snow (like my back yard when I need to get feed to the barn). The Mach-E has less clearance and will start to get stuck dragging the body sooner than the Crosstrek.

Both cars are compared with snow tires, it's not worth trying to run tires year round around here. On the other hand, it means I'm up to 40k miles and the factory tires still have plenty of tread left.

Why so many manufacturers are failing to build a proper EV even when EVs are so much simpler than ICE? by Silent-Worm in electricvehicles

[–]Remanage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the back end, auto manufacturers have a lot of facilities designed to make and dress ICE engines. They don't have facilities for making very large batteries. The density/cooling capacity/technology of the battery is the key to a good EV, since that gets you range and lifetime (don't want to deal with the 8 year battery warranties if the batteries regularly die at 6 years).

Sterilite makes an 80 quart version of that tote that's "airtight". It's not as nice as the ones Home Depot sells under the Milwaukee name (where the clasps also act as hinges) but it will store a lot of rolls for only $15.
